The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) has urged media houses to set up fact-checking desks to combat the spread of fake news, misinformation, and disinformation, reports ITREALMS.
This call was made at a one-day workshop organized by the European Union (EU) in collaboration with the NGE in Lagos.
The workshop, which brought together editors from various media organizations, aimed to equip them with the skills and tools necessary to verify news hints and publish accurate information.
The EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Mr. Gautier Mignot, emphasized the importance of fact-checking in combating misinformation.
The NGE President, Mr. Eze Anaba, noted that the deliberate spread of false information threatens social cohesion, democratic governance, and national security.
He expressed hope that the workshop would serve as a platform for building collective capacity to identify and combat false narratives.
Also, the NGE in a press statement available to ITREALMS and endorsed by the president, Eze Anaba and Secretary General, Onuoha Ukeh, revealed plans to set up disinformation counter groups across its zonal structures ahead of the 2027 general election.
Media organizations, NGE said are encouraged to organize trainings for newsroom managers and line editors on fact-checking, collaborate and verify information with each other, and use their platforms to address issues bordering on fake news, misinformation, and disinformation.
Further, NGE pointed out by setting up fact-checking desks, media houses could play a crucial role in promoting accurate information and combating the spread of fake news in Nigeria.
