The Digital Graveyard: Lagos Ports Swell Under "Unserviceable Junk" by Remmy Nweke - WeekendDigits@ITREALMS

WeekendDigits@ITREALMS ... making leadership SENSE with digital news!
Lagos ports are drowning in unserviceable tech imports, turning Nigeria into a digital dumping ground. Remmy Nweke analyzes the alarming environmental and economic impact of this growing crisis in WeekendDigits@ITREALMS.
Preamble:
The air at the Tin Can Island Port in Lagos is thick with the scent of salt spray and rusted iron, but lately, there is a sharper, more chemical tang underlying the breeze. It is the smell of a thousand dying batteries and scorched circuit boards.
The Digital Graveyard: Lagos Ports Swell Under "Unserviceable Junk" by Remmy Nweke - WeekendDigits@ITREALMS
As the sun beats down on the stacks of corrugated steel containers, a crane lowers a weathered 40-foot box onto the concrete. When the heavy bolts are thrown back, it does not reveal the shiny, cutting-edge technology one might hope for.

Instead, it’s a chaotic mosaic of the past: bulky cathode-ray tube monitors with cracked screens, tangled nests of frayed power cords, and plastic laptop casings yellowed by decades of use in distant offices.

The Global Flush
The "Push" starts thousands of miles away in the gleaming tech hubs of Europe and North America. Driven by a relentless cycle of upgrades, consumers discard devices that are barely three years old. For these nations, recycling is expensive and regulated. It is far easier and infinitely cheaper, to label a shipping container as "donated electronics" or "second-hand goods" and send it south.

To the global north, this is a convenient clearing of the slate. To the Lagos ports, it is an incoming tide of unserviceable junk. Customs officials sift through the manifests, but the sheer volume is overwhelming. Beneath a thin layer of working "tested" appliances lies the true cargo: dead weight that will never power on again.
The Digital Graveyard: Lagos Ports Swell Under "Unserviceable Junk" by Remmy Nweke - WeekendDigits@ITREALMS
A Nation Seeking A Connection:
On the other side of the port gates, the "Pull" is fueled by economic necessity. In the bustling markets of Computer Village in Ikeja, the demand for connectivity is at an all-time high, but the purchasing power of the average Nigerian is being squeezed by inflation.

1. Preamble: The Digital Taxnet Tightens
For many Nigerians, the phrase "state power" usually evokes images of law enforcement on the streets. However, in the wake of the newly implemented Nigeria Tax Administration Act (NTAA) 2025, the Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS) is demonstrating that its reach now extends directly into the digital ledgers of financial institutions.

48@Digital blindspot: How Nigeria’s 'fifth column' shields terror dollars by Remmy Nweke | WeekendDigits@ITREALMS

WeekendDigits@ITREALMS ... making leadership SENSE with digital news!

General Ali-Keffi’s exposé has sent shockwaves through Nigeria’s security architecture, revealing a "Fifth Column" that allegedly protects forty-eight high-level terror financiers. For WeekendDigits@ITREALMS, REMMY NWEKE breaks down the "Digital Blindspot," the space where forensic data exists but judicial action fails; unmasking the systemic rot that allows the lifeblood of insurgency to remain untouched.

Digital blindspot in national security:
The release of 48 high-level terror financier suspects without trial is far more than a mere administrative oversight; it represents a profound "Digital Blindspot" in Nigerian governance and national security architecture. For years, the Nigerian public has been told that the names of those funding the bloodbath in the North-East and North-West are etched into the databases of security agencies. Yet, the transition from forensic intelligence to successful judicial prosecution remains stalled by a complex, opaque web of interests.
48@Digital blindspot: How Nigeria’s 'fifth column' shields terror dollars by Remmy Nweke | WeekendDigits@ITREALMS

'Fifth Column' and internal sabotage:
Retired Major General Danjuma Ali-Keffi’s recent demand for a probe shines a harsh spotlight on what many security experts refer to as the "Fifth Column"; a clandestine group of individuals within the government and security forces who either secretly sympathize with the insurgents' ideology or, more commonly, profit from the chaos they create.
