The Collaboration on International ICT Policy for East and Southern Africa (CIPESA) has announced that the 2025 edition of the Forum on Internet Freedom in Africa (FIFAfrica25) will be co-hosted in partnership with the Namibian Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (MICT) and the Namibia Internet Governance Forum (NamIGF), reports ITREALMS.
The forum will take place in Windhoek, Namibia, from September 25-27, 2025, with a focus on advancing internet freedom in Africa, digital rights, inclusion, and governance.
Namibia offers a unique platform for discussing internet freedom, given its strong commitment to democratic governance, press freedom, and inclusive digital development. The country is also the birthplace of the 1991 Windhoek Declaration, a landmark document promoting independent and pluralistic media.
The forum aims to advance progressive digital policy agendas that uphold fundamental rights and promote digital democracy in Africa. It will provide a platform for diverse voices to shape the future of internet freedom in Africa and discuss emerging challenges and opportunities in the digital landscape, including artificial intelligence governance, connectivity gaps, and platform accountability.
The Minister of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Emma Inamutila Theofelus, emphasized Namibia's commitment to advancing technology for inclusive social economic development.
The NamIGF Chairperson, Albetine Shipena, underscored the partnership's significance in advancing digital rights, open governance, and meaningful multistakeholder engagement, while CIPESA Executive Director, Dr. Wairagala Wakabi, noted the importance of Africans informing and shaping the frameworks that govern digital spaces.
