A new leadership has emerged at the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) with the incumbent president, Mr Femi Adesina returning to lead the guild for the next two years, reports ITRealms.

This was the out come of the general election at the 2015 biennial convention held at the Airport Hotels Ikeja Lagos, today, Saturday April 25, this year.

Announcing the result, the Election Committee lead by its chairman Mr Stanley Egbochuku confirmed to ITRealms that Mr. Garba Deen Muhammed, Vice President North is Suleiman Uba Gaya, Vice President West Mr. Steve Ayorinde, Vice President East Mr. Fred Fabor.

Also, Mrs. Victoria Ibanga was elected as the General Secretary, Ms Mary Yinka Atolagbe became the Assist General Secretary, Ogbang Akwaji is the Treasurer, Funke Egbemode emerged the Social Secretary.

Equally they listed the seven-man member of the Standing Committee elected to include Sabastine Abu and Sani ADAMU for North, Ken Njoku and Juliet Njiowhor, while Mr. Ray Echeberi,  Ken Ugbechie and Austeen Elewodalu came in from the West.

They were later sworn in by the chairperson of the convention, Mrs Dupe Ajayi-Gbadebo after extending a congratulatory message to the new executive of the Nigerian Guild of Editors.

Internet fraudster bags 2 years for email hacking

Internet fraudster, Okwuka Olisaebuka Ifeanyi, who specializes in hacking peoples electronic mail (email) with aim of committing fraud, has been jailed for two years, reports ITRealms.

Ifeanyi, ITRealms reports was on April 23, 2015 sentenced to a two-year imprisonment by Justice H.A Nganjiwa of the Federal High Court, Port Harcourt, Rivers State on a three count amended charge of forgery brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Ifeanyi’s journey to jail started on April 21, 2014 when he was arrested by operatives of the Commission with various forged fraudulent documents in his possession.

One of the charge reads:

“That you Okwuka Olisaebuka Ifeanyi on or about the 3rd day of March, 2013 at Port Harcourt within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, with intent to defraud, did forge a document with subject: URGENT SECURITY UPDATE purportedly issued by First bank of Nigeria Plc that it may be acted upon as genuine which you knew to be false and thereby committed an offence contrary to section 1 (2) (c) of the Miscellaneous Offences CAP M17 of the Revised Edition (Laws of the Federation of Nigeria) Act 2007 and Punishable under section 1(2) of the same Act.”

He pleaded guilty upon his arraignment on February 24, 2015.

In view of his plea, the matter was adjourned to March 5, 2015 for review of facts where the EFCC gave evidence and tendered several exhibits to prove its case.

Following the review of facts, Justice Nganjiwa found the accused guilty and sentenced him accordingly.

The convict is to forfeit his laptop and phone, which he used in the fraudulent activities, to the Federal Government.

Why Oluremi was sentenced to 266 years - EFCC

The Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) may have offered reasons why a female staff of a popular eatery, Sweet Sensation, Oluremi Olayinka was recently convicted and sentenced to 266 years imprisonment for allegedly stealing N8 million, reports ITRealms.

Justice A.A Akinyemi of Ogun State High Court, Abeokuta, ITRealms gathered may have made the pronouncement in ‘fury’ because the convict initially pleaded guilty but on arraignment denounced her plea.

According to Head, Media and Publicity at EFCC, Wilson Uwujaren, when the convict was initially confronted with the allegation, she admitted the crime “only for her to dramatically pleaded not guilty upon arraignment.”

This, judiciary analysts said may have doubled her offence and likewise punishment before the presiding Judge, who equally ordered her to return the loot to her employer, Sweet Sensation.

Ms Olayinka, ITRealms recalls was sentenced for allegedly stealing N8 million belonging to her employer, which  is an offence contrary to sections 390(6)(7)(8), 467 and 468 in that order of the Criminal Code Law Cap 29, Laws of Ogun State.

She was also found guilty on all the 34 count charges, hence she was sentenced to seven years on each of 30 counts and 14 years on the remaining four charges. The sentences were to run concurrently.

Olayinka was arraigned before Justice Akinyemi on May 13, 2014 following a petition, alleging that she stole the sum of N8,000,000( Eight Million Naira), which she received on behalf of her employer.

Uwujaren also told ITRealms in a press statement that in the course of trial, EFCC had presented four witnesses and tendered sixteen exhibits to prove the case against the convict.

App Indexing on the prowl, reaches 30b links

Application indexing (App Indexing) has been on the prowl as it gains 30 billion links worldwide, reports ITRealms.

This, Product Manager, Lawrence Chang confided in ITRealms has been helpful to people who want to create great contents, especially for developers.

Starting this week, ITRealms gathered that people searching on Google could also discover their apps if they have not installed it yet.

“You’ve invested time and effort into making your app an awesome experience, and we want to help people find the great content you’ve created,” says Chang.

He explained that App Indexing has already been helping people to engage with their Android app after installation.

“We now have 30 billion links within apps indexed,” he said. Stressing that if one has implemented App Indexing, when indexed content from the app is relevant to a search done on Google on Android devices, people may start to see app install buttons for your app in search results. 

According to Chang, “Tapping these buttons will take them to the Google Play store where they can install your app, then continue straight on to the right content within it.”

He further explained that with the addition of these install links, they are starting to use App Indexing as a ranking signal for all users on Android, regardless of whether they have the app installed or not. 

“We hope that Search will now help you acquire new users, as well as re-engage your existing ones,” he said.

Oracle says FG must explore ICT potentials

ICT experts at a recently concluded Oracle Corporation Roundtable held in Lagos, have advocated that both Federal and State Governments must unanimously adopt technology as an available first-rate resources in Nigeria to salvage the economy from excess dependent on oil and gas, ITRealms reports.

ITRealms gathered that the event was graced by Country Managing Director of Oracle Nigeria, Adebayo Sanni, Chief Executive Officer, Computer Warehouse Group,(CWG), Mr. Austin Okere, Director General, Lagos State Financial Systems Management Bureau, Abdulahmed Mustapha, and Director, Software at Edo State Information Communication Technology (ICT) Agency, Toju Onaiwu.

Mr. Sanni who spoke in the course of the discussion, told ITRealms that the loss of oil revenues, in a positive way, has compelled the country to give more attention to other areas of the economy, including technology. 

He further highlighted that the country will perform better in the IT space with the necessary skill sets, especially with the private and public sector working harmoniously to ensure the teeming youths in the country are properly equipped.

“39 per cent of firms are already struggling to recruit workers with the advanced Technical Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics skills they need, and four per cent of firms believe that the shortage will persist over the next three years.” He said.

“Technology is no doubt changing the way we live and work around the world and specifically in Nigeria. Public and private organizations have a responsibility to work together to help young people acquire key business and IT skills that can help them in turn to cultivate long-term success”. He added.

ITRealms learnt that Oracle has partnered with Lagos State Government to complete the phase two of the Lagos State Workforce Development Programme, which would to assist in training graduates on Oracle Database or Oracle E-Business Suite and further provides graduates with opportunities to acquire industry-relevant skills and internships within the private sector and in some of the State’s ministries.

On his part, Director General, Lagos State Financial Systems Management Bureau, Abdulahmed Mustapha, ITRealms learnt has affirmed that the army of unemployed youths portends a great danger as such, necessitates the State Governments conscious effort to work with Oracle to find better ways to serve the citizens.

“Oracle Systems have helped us keep our money well in terms of record keeping, which springs over to infrastructural development. In Lagos with about 20 million populations, every Lagosian needs one service or the other. So, technology is the only apparatus that will help less than 200,000 government workers to deliver services to the people and promptly.” He said.

ITRealms gathered that Oracle solutions have helped individuals, corporate firms and key government sectors in the areas of auditing and scrutinizing the workforce for ghost workers and procurement and payment systems done using Oracle system.

ITRealms also learnt that technology have added to the creation of over six billion jobs, even as the world economy has increased by $193billion at the World Economic Forum 2014.

Microsoft Lifts PFL Cup 2015

The Play for Literacy Battle (PFL) of the Techies Tourney 2015, has come to an end as MS Spartans, football team of tech giant, Microsoft, beats Team SAP Nigeria in the finals to lift the cup at the Campos Square Mini Stadium, Lagos, ITRealms reports.

MS Spartans, ITRealms gathered, beat her opponent by 3 goals to 2 on a penalty shoot outs after playing a 2-2 draw at regulation time.

A player for the MS Spartans team, Shina Oyetosho, who scored twice in the two (2) day football tourney ITRealms learnt emerged the Highest Goal Scorer of the competition, while Kelechi Nwosu of Team SAP Nigeria clinched the Most Valuable Player and Best Goalie Award of the tourney.

ITRealms also gathered that the PFL was organised by a non-profit organisation, AYECI Africa, as an engaging way to mobilize leading corporate organisations and their employees to give to its literacy project.

Equally ITRealms learnt that the awareness and funds raised from the match will go to ‘Educate-a-Community Literacy Program’, a charity project which works for educationally disadvantaged women and children

Executive Director of AYECI Africa, Ifeoma Adibe, told ITRealms that the PFL is a way to collectively use the power of football and collaboration to offer educationally disadvantaged people in under-served communities a gift of literacy. “With the support of more businesses, we anticipate doubling the impact of the campaign in 2015," she said.

Meanwhile Finance Director and Team Manager, Microsoft Nigeria, Segun Adeniran, who spoke in appreciation of the tournament, said that their desire is to participate in any cause that would serve a greater good.  

“We’ve always been interested in being part of a great cause that serves a greater good, every opportunity that enables us engage our employees in the process is most welcome.  We came to this tourney to give back and to win, we are glad we did both” He said.

With this win, MS Spartans joins Team LASAA (Lagos State Signage and Advertising Agency) winners of PFL EKO Tourney Season II to advance to the Play for Literacy Super Cup Finals.

The Play for Literacy Tourney ITRealms learnt is fast becoming a sought-after charity sporting event by corporate organizations to celebrate the value and power literacy offers in promoting knowledge and improving people’s prospects while creating more empowered communities.
