Ghana – one of the first countries to vaccinate against malaria through the pilot malaria vaccine implementation programme (MVIP), supported by Gavi – has granted full national licensure to the R21/Matrix-M malaria vaccine, developed by the University of Oxford and manufactured and scaled up by the Serum Institute of India (SII). 

This second vaccine comes alongside the RTS,S vaccine, which was prequalified by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2022 following a recommendation for its wider use in 2021. According to the WHO’s 2022 world malaria report, the disease killed 619,000 people in 2021 – with 96% of those deaths in the WHO African region, making malaria one of Africa’s biggest killers. Alongside existing interventions, this vaccine will help save more lives.

Ghana is to host the 3rd Mr. & Miss Autism which is a pageant-style project organized by AA Antonio Foundation, reports ITREALMS.

The pageant, ITREALMS gathered, is the first autism talent grooming and empowerment hub in Ghana that promotes social inclusion through creative arts.

According to the Founder and CEO,Afi Antonio Foundation, Philomena Esinam Afi Antonio "To the glory of God this year will be our third edition."

She also revealed that on Saturday April 29, 2023 six (6) persons living on the autism spectrum disorder (ASD) would be battling out to wear the crown and own the bragging right of Mr. & Miss Autism Ghana 2023.

This event is set to happen at 3Music TV HQ. In attendance will be well-meaning High Network Individuals (HNIs), Health professionals, Diplomats, Social Activists, Social Entrepreneurs, Celebrities, Caregivers, Volunteers and Students.

The project manager, Kassim Alhassan Seid, said “We hope to reach and engage more with the Autism society and mental health community in Ghana and continue to promote social inclusion for persons on the spectrum and on a broader scale develop acceptance for persons with developmental disorders.”

Philomena Esinam Afi Antonio, founder – Afi Antonio Foundation is motivated by the acceptance rate in Ghana and she’s hoping that with the support of international and governmental organizations they could take this project to other parts of Africa. She said; “Having Government build special need centers in all regions to help poor parents who can’t afford sending their children to private centers will go a long way to help the already burdened parents”.

“Unlike the previous two editions, this year we will have children on the spectrum showcase and exhibit their handiworks. Reading about the post-2023 Presidential election discourse in Nigeria is exasperating. The politicians have successfully steered the discourse away from logical discussions about our country's development to emotional and divisive topics such as tribalism and religion. This tactic has been used to maintain the status quo by dividing the population. People are willing to overlook the truth and blindly follow their tribal or religious affiliations. We have all been manipulated and will continue to be until we can break free from this narrow-minded way of viewing national issues.

History has taught us that following the paths of ethnic and religious bigotry leads us to no viable destination. The Rwandan Genocide serves as an example of the tragic outcome of such paths.The genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda, also known as the Rwandan genocide, occurred during the Rwandan Civil War between April 7 and July 15, 1994. Over the course of about 100 days, armed Hutu militias killed members of the Tutsi minority ethnic group, as well as some moderate Hutu and Twa. The most widely accepted scholarly estimates put the number of Tutsi deaths between 500,000 to 662,000.

Prelude:

In a suburb of Lagos known as Bolade in the Oshodi-Isolo Local Government Area of the commercial city, a single mother identified as Iya Hannah Odewale operates an airtime kiosk. She deals in all manners of airtime; from phone airtime also called ‘credit’ in local parlance to providing top-ups for decoders, among others in the neighbourhood.

She also has a neighbour who works at a customer service centre of one of the Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) known as Onyi Kachiukwu. One thing these neigbhours have in common is that they reside in same building at the neighbourhood and with the coming of the introduction of the Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) by mobile operators to conduct some services including checking of balances on airtime or data, Iya Hannah is sure Onyi has the precise code answer and from there, he became the help-line for Iya Hannah; giving her the needed and relevant codes so she can offer and fulfill customers request.

Was Pantami for telecom consumers?

Noteworthy is that towards the last quarter of 2019, especially on resumption of office, the current Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Ali Pantami took it upon himself to kick against and even later formally commenced jettisoning plans by MNOs to introduce new charges for USSD, more so upon realisation that USSD is largely now being used by bank customers for financial transactions.
