SIM card deadline: NATCOMs begs CommTech minister to intervene
The National Association of
Telecommunications Subscribers (NATCOMS) has appealed to the Honourable
Minister of Communication Technology, Mrs. Omobola Johnson to prevail on the
industry regulator, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to extend the
just closed deadline for registration of Subscriber identification Module (SIM)
cards, which ended four days ago.
NATCOMS in its plea letter
sighted by ITRealms argued that its plea be reconsidered to give Nigerian subscribers
a 3-Month One-Way final warning extension on SIM Cards registration.
“That is subscribers to be able
to receive calls,” NATCOMS president, Chief Deola Ogunbanjo declared.
Though part of the letter
outlined four points for their plea, including:
1. During the SIM Registration exercise, some Umbrella SIM Registration Agents were not collecting the full details needed because of the rush by the Agents to register as many Subscribers so as get paid big.
2. Some Umbrella SIM Registration Agents, during the active registration period and even now are asking Subscribers to pay N100 (One Hunderd Naira before registration. A situation that discourages Subscribers.
3. Some Umbrella SIM Registration Agents, even when they are Agents of a Particular Network Operator, collect other Operators SIM Cards for registration in order to shore up the number of SIM Cards they register daily.
4. Some Umbrella SIM Registration Agents, copy their daily registered Subscribers and give to their colleagues in business as some form of ‘help.’

Viewers
of the popular Big Brother reality show now have three chances to vote for
their favourites and against those they want evicted.
ITRealms gathered that voting usually opens immediately after Monday and closes at 06:00 Central Africa Time (CAT) on Sunday morning.These three ways to vote to keep your favourite housemate in Big Brother: The Chase include via the world wide web (www), Short Messaging Service (SMS) or mobile site.
Voting viewers have the chance of winning amazing prizes in the process, such as DStv High Definition (HD) Personal Video Recorder (PVR’s) and DStv Walkas.
Further, ITRealms findings showed that to vote via web or mobile sire, viewers are to go
to the official Big Brother website, www.bigbrotherafrica.com, log in, click ‘Vote’
and then click the appropriate button for the housemate you’d like to keep in
the house.
“You
may vote once per hour,” officials say.
And to
vote via SMS, send the word VOTE, followed by the name of the housemate you
would like to keep in the game, to the number for your country below.
DigitalSENSE News: ICANN board assents to 2013 Registry agreement
The New gTLD Registry Agreement is intended to enhance the
security and stability of the Domain Name System (DNS) while bolstering competition
in domain name industry.
The security provisions comprise of a requirement that registry
operators implement Domain Name System Security Extensions (DNSSEC), reducing
so-called “man-in-the-middle” attacks and spoofed DNS records.
Equally, this calls for an enhanced WHOIS
service at the registry level with a common interface, and more rapid search
capabilities, facilitating efficient resolution of malicious activities.
This seems to be bringing to the fore over
the decision of the working group to take WHOIS off the table.

Non-Commercial group gears-up for Durban'13
The Non-Commercial Stakeholders Group (NCSG) has advanced plans
for its meeting scheduled for forthcoming Internet Corporation for Assigned
Names and Numbers (ICANN) public session in Durban, South Africa, between July
14-19, 2013.
Chairperson of the group, Robin Gross confirmed that they have
planned to meet in Durban alongside remote participants and those attending
physically, adding that NCSG meeting holds on Tuesday, July 16 this year.
A draft
programme sighted by ITRealms provisions have been made for members who would like to
dial-in to the meeting and remote participation via Adobe Connect online software.
According to
the draft agenda, some of the key issues for NCSG in Durban comprised of examining
the protection of multi-stakeholder model for Internet governance; Beijing Communiqué
of the Governmental Advisory Committee (GAC);
Also on the
agenda as disclosed by Robin Gross, are the “Accountability Transparency Review
Team, WHOIS - Privacy Issues and others such as Intergovernmental
Organizations (IGOs) and International Non-Governmental Organizations (INGOs); Policy v. Implementation.”

Her participation in the opening session of ICANN47, reflects the partnership between the African Union and Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) that began at ICANN42 in Dakar, Senegal.
This partnership, official say, has continued to grow and strengthen since it began in 2011, especially over the past year, noting that African Union has been one of the strongest supporters of ICANN's African strategy, and the results of this strategy's implementation will be shared during the Durban meeting.
ITRealms also gathered that Dr. Ibrahim has over 30 years of experience in electrical interconnection, energy strategy, network design and renewable energy.
Prior to her position with the African Union, she served as the First Under Secretary of State in the Ministry of Electricity and Energy in Egypt, as well as the General Manager for training and promotion in Egypt's New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA).

Have your say on Internationalised Domains until July 25

The Joint country
code Name Supporting Organisation (ccNSO) cum Generic Name Supporting
Organisation (GNSO) on Internationalised Domain Name (IDN) Working Group (JIG)
has disclosed that stakeholders have until July 25, 2013 to make input in the
draft final report on universal acceptance of IDN Top Level Domains (TLDs).
Bart Boswinkel,
the ICANN contact staff on JIG said the purpose of seeking public comment is to
have the community input on its latest draft acceptance, including recommendations
to the ccNSO and GNSO Councils for further action to
resolve policy and other relating to the universal acceptance of IDN TLDs.
Also Bart said,
the working expects to finalize and publish its final report, and submit their
report, after taking into account the comments received.
The current status, showed that seeking public comment on its draft Final Report is part of the
process for developing recommendations to the
ccNSO and GNSO Councils as defined in the
charter of the JIG.
The JIG,
ICANN official revealed would closely review all submitted comments to
determine, at its reasonable discretion, to modify its report.
The working group expects to formally publish its final report by the end of August and submit it to both the ccNSO and GNSO Council for adoption and further action.
Google Reader: The End of This Internet or Rest in Peace
Google has finally rested its Google Reader with a subject
line that this could be the end of this aspect of the internet.
ITRealms gathered
that following the announcement to close Google Reader on July 1, 2013, the
search engine corporation has finally carried out its proclamation on Google
Reader.
A mail obtained from the Google Reader team this morning
read thus “Google Operating System: The End of This Internet” in its subject electronic mail (email).
"Congratulations, you've reached the end of this
internet. Look for another?" part of the email read.
Lamenting this service, one of its ardent user, Giacomo Rambaldi, confirmed to ITRealms that was
the message one received when trying to
use the Google Reader bookmarklet.
Although it sounds like a joke, he described it as “quite
bitter, now that the end of Google Reader is really close.”
According to him, Google Reader was more than just a feed
reader, it was probably the most well-connected Google service. It was
integrated with so many Google services and now all of them will be a little
less useful.
He elucidated that the missing features, which relied on
Google Reader, will show how important this service really was.
Pointing out that iGoogle's canvas view for feeds was
powered by Google Reader and now it's no longer available, just like the Reader
gadget.
ITRealms recalls
that Google Reader was a
content application and platform provided by Google that was an aggregator
of content served by web feeds. It was created in early 2005 by Google engineer
Chris Wetherell and launched on October 7, 2005, through Google Labs.
Google Reader grew in popularity to support a number of apps
which used it as a platform for serving news and information to people. On
March 13, 2013, Google announced that Google Reader would be closed on July 1,
2013, due to declining use.
