ICANN 53 fellowship now opens




The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers' (ICANN) Fellowship programme has commenced seeking of participants’ application for the ICANN 53 to be held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, reports ITRealms.

Potential applicants from developing countries, ITRealms reports, working for the stability and secure operation of the Internet's unique identifier system were encouraged to apply.

ITRealms also gathered that the goals of the fellowship programme are to help broaden the base of knowledgeable constituents engaged in ICANN's Multistakeholder process and to encourage the participation of new voices from around the world.

In addition, ITRealms reports that ICANN's current application round seeks prospective candidates for the June 2015 ICANN Meeting in Buenos Aires, Argentina. 

The application process, ITRealms learnt, closes on 16 January 2015, with successful candidates announced on the ICANN website on 6 March 2015.

ICANN further advised according to ITRealms to apply for the Fellowship Programme here.
ITRealms recalls that since its creation in 2007, the Fellowship Program has built a strong database of individuals who are active participants within ICANN communities, as well as within various Internet governance organizations. 

Their engagement ITRealms findings showed would include writing articles and blogs, providing online or in-person public comments about bottom-up policy development, engaging in Internet conferences and discussions, mentoring newcomers and assisting ICANN's regional leaders.

ITRealms equally gathered these activities lead to Fellows becoming leaders themselves, who are committed to preserving and enhancing the operational stability, reliability, security, and global interoperability of the Internet.

Nigeria to host 2nd EMF conference in Lagos





The Federal Government of Nigeria, through the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has concluded plans to host the Second West African Conference on Electro Magnetic Field (EMF) and Health on the 17-18 December, 2014 in Lagos, reports ITRealms.

The two-day conference, ITRealms reports, would be held at the Eko Hotel & Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos, with the theme “EMF in a Highly Connected Society: Understanding the myths and realities.”

ITRealms also reports that this conference, will provide a platform for policy makers, regulators, legislators, operators, mobile equipment manufacturers, consumer groups and other stakeholders to raise the level of understanding about potential adverse health effects, if any, of mobile communication aimed at establishing a harmonised EMF policy in the West African sub-region.

This, Director, Public Affairs at NCC, Mr. Tony Ojobo told ITRealms is in line with the political effort to adopt WHO Model Legislation and ICNIRP exposure limits in Nigeria, asserting, “It is expected that this will function as a role model for other sub-regions.”

Ojobo also hinted ITRealms that the Honourable Minister of Communication Technology, Dr. (Mrs) Omobola Johnson will deliver the keynote address at the conference, while Ministers from other concerned jurisdictions such as the Science and Technology; Health; and Environment will also participate at the event

Other participants expected from ITRealms findings are the Chairmen of the Senate and House of Representatives Committees on Science and Technology; Communication and Environment

Equally expected are officials of the World Health Organization, International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIPR), Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), West African Telecommunications Regulators Assembly (WATRA); Mobile Manufacturers Forum (MMF), and academia as well as relevant stakeholders nationwide.

Obiano lays foundation for N63b Intercont​inental Trade Centre in Ogbunike



The Anambra State Governor, Chief Willie Obiano has laid the foundation for the proposed $350 million, about N63 billion, West Africa Intercontinental Trade Centre to be situated in Ogbunike in Oyi Local Government Area (LGA) of the state, reports DigitalSENSE Business News.

The Trade Center, DigitalSENSE Business News learnt is a major part of the Trade and Commerce category of Governor Obiano’s Four Pillars of Development.  Other pillars are Agriculture, Industrialization and Oil and Gas. 

DigitalSENSE Business News gathered that on completion, the Intercontinental Trade Centre is expected to be the largest and most comprehensive commercial and entertainment complex in Africa, accommodating a large number of wholesale plazas and retail clusters, state-of-the-art residential blocks, eateries, convention centers, a boutique hotel and a motel that will be operated by leading brands across the globe.

Situated at 7 kilometers away from the commercial city of Onitsha Main Market, the largest market in West Africa, the Intercontinental Trade Center is conceived as a one-stop commercial landmark in the entire South Eastern economic block and a symbol of the entrepreneurial and commercial acumen of Ndigbo.

Speaking at the foundation stone laying ceremony, Chief Obiano told DigitalSENSE Business News that it’s historical in the life of Anambra State.  

“Today marks a remarkable day in the history of our great state.  It is a sure sign that our people are marching in the right direction. Recall that my administration is focused on Four Pillars. Today I am happy that we have attracted the much needed investment in the Trade and Commerce sector. This symbolic groundbreaking ceremony marks the beginning of construction works on the most modern market in Africa right here in our beloved state,” he said.

Giving a rare insight into the equity structure of the project, Governor Obiano revealed that the state government controls 7 percent while the host community holds 2.5 percent of the equity.

“The $350m that is projected for this market is broken down as follows – $15.74bn will be expended on infrastructure, $4.9bn will be spent on providing electricity to the center while $31.8bn will go into the construction of residential areas in a new layout that takes into consideration the factory layout style of the project. My administration will do everything to make this project a resounding success,” the governor assured while appealing to all stake holders to rise to the challenge and deliver the proposed Trade Center in 42 months as projected. 

In his remarks, President, West Africa International Trade Center, Mr. Obiora Anyaralu, lamented the inability of previous leadership to groom generations of industrialists and entrepreneurs from Anambra State, arguing that they had invested their resources and genius in developing virtually everywhere else but their home state, Anambra State should have been like Dubai.

“I do not see any reason why we should not have something that is of international standard; something that we can appeal to our brothers and sisters in Nigeria and the Diaspora to come home and invest in. We have always done our best to invest and develop other places but we have never taken the need to invest in our home state seriously. But all that has come to an end under the leadership of Governor Obiano,” he declared.

Anyaralu further decried that Anambra businessmen and women usually build mansions in their country homes and abandon them for cockroaches, rats and reptiles to occupy because there had not been any serious planning to expand the commercial and industrial capacities of the state on a scale that would accommodate the entrepreneurial energies of Anambra people.

“The next phase is that we will change the psyche of Ndi Anambra on the way we should live. We shall plough the sum of $350m into building mega housing estates in Anambra State to provide world class residential areas for our people who want to set up businesses and relocate their families to Anambra. The estates will be built on locations with close proximity to the Trade Center so that residents can access the Center in less than 20 minutes.  When this Center is completed, it will be the only such Center in all of Africa. The only other place you can see a similar project is either Europe or America,” Mr. Anyaralu assured.

Equally speaking, Managing Director, SGN Housing and Infrastructures Limited, the funding partners, Mr. Dominic Menouh appreciated Governor Obiano for the motivation to envision a world-class market.

“This is a market that not only integrates the Nigerian idea of a place of commerce but a market that represents a point of gathering, a point of entertainment and a location where people can meet and socialize. Indeed it is the first time that a market of this type will be built in Nigeria and Africa,” he said.

Stressing that the complex will not only represent a new approach to the selling of goods and services but will also be built in line with the new and green technology.

Internet users now 3 million+ says IWS




A total of 3,035,749.340 Internet users are now recorded in the world, as of June 2014 reports DigitalSENSE Business News.

According to the mid-year 2014 Internet World Statistics made available to DigitalSENSE Business News as updated, showed that there are 3,035,749.340 Internet users in the world.
DigitalSENSE Business News also reported that as of June 2014, the penetration rate of the Internet in the world, is equivalent to the percentage of the population that has access to the Internet, as 42.3 per cent.

At present, DigitalSENSE Business News gathered that only the main stats table has been updated on the site, tagged as the Big Picture.

Intel’s secret for future high-performance PCs



Intel Corporation has revealed the anticipated secret of future high-performance computing, reports DigitalSENSE Business News.

The new and enhanced technologies, DigitalSENSE Business News reports would bolster Intel’s leadership in high performance computing (HPC), which would include the future generation Intel Xeon Phi Processor, tagged ‘Knights Hill,’ and Intel ‘Omni-Path’ architecture; a new high speed interconnect technology optimized for HPC deployments.

Also DigitalSENSE Business News gathered that the new software releases and collaborative efforts were designed to make it easier to extract the full performance potential from current and future Intel Industry- standard hardware.

Charles Wuischpard, Vice President, Data Center Group, and General Manager of Workstations and HPC at Intel affirmed this secret to DigitalSENSE Business News, stressing that this innovation will address the dual challenges of extreme scalability and mainstream use of high performance computing systems while providing the foundation for a cost-effective path to superb computing.

The new Intel Xeon Phi Product family, Knights Hill, he told DigitalSENSE Business News via a press statement, will be built using Intel’s 10mm process technology and integrate Intel Omni- Path Fabric technology. Noting that industry investment in Intel Xeon Phi processors continues to grow with more than 50 providers expected to offer systems built using the new processor version of Knights Landing with many more systems using the coprocessor PCle card version of the product.

 
Intel equally disclosed to DigitalSENSE Business News that the Intel Omni-Path Architecture is expected to offer 100 Gbps line speed and up to 56 per cent lower switch fabric latency in medium-to-large clusters than InfiniBand alternatives.  

The Intel Omni-Path Architecture will use a 48 port switch chip to deliver greater port density and system scaling compared to the current 36 port InfiniBand alternatives.  Providing up to 33 percent more nodes per switch chip is expected to reduce the number of switches required, simplifying system design and reducing infrastructure costs at every scale.  

“Intel is excited about the strong market momentum and customer investment in the development of HPC systems based on current and future Intel Xeon Phi processors and high-speed fabric technology. The integration of these fundamental HPC building blocks, combined with an open standards-based programming model, will maximize HPC system performance, broaden accessibility and use, and serve as the on-ramp to exascale,”  he said.

Charles Wuischpard pointed out that the expected benefits of the system scale include up to 1.3x greater port density than InfiniBand – enabling smaller clusters to maximize single switch investments and use up to 50 per cent fewer switches than a comparable InfiniBand-based cluster of medium- to large-size and up to 2.3x higher scaling in a two-tier fabric configuration using the same number of switches as an InfiniBand-based cluster – allowing for more cost-effective scaling for very large cluster-based systems.
           
Recent high-profile Knights Landing deals, DigitalSENSE Business News recalls  include the Trinity supercomputer, a joint effort between Los Alamos and Sandia National Laboratories, and the Cori supercomputer, announced by The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) National Energy Research Scientific Computing (NERSC) Center. Additionally, DownUnder GeoSolutions a geosciences company, recently announced the largest commercial deployment of current-generation Intel Xeon Phi coprocessors, and the National Supercomputing Center IT4Innovations announced a new supercomputer that will become the largest Intel Xeon Phi coprocessor-based cluster in Europe.

            Intel-based systems account for 86 percent of all supercomputers and 97 percent of all new additions, according to the 44th edition of the TOP500 list announced today. In the two years since the introduction of the first-generation Intel Xeon Phi product family, these many-core coprocessor-based systems represent 17 percent of the aggregated performance of all TOP500 supercomputers.
