13-yr Omar Farouq: UNICEF demands reversal of sentence - ITREALMS

Despite recently signing Child Protection Bill into an Act, the Kano State Sharia Court at Feli Hockey, Kano, in northern Nigeria, has sentenced a 13-year-old Omar Farouq to 10 years imprisonment with menial labour, reports ITREALMS.


This is coming as UNICEF has expressed deep concern about the sentence and asked the government both at the Federal and Kano State to reverse it.



The sentence was handed down after he was convicted of blasphemy on 10 August 2020.


“The sentencing of this child - 13-year-old Omar Farouk - to 10 years in prison with menial labour is wrong. It also negates all core underlying principles of child rights and child justice that Nigeria - and by implication, Kano State - has signed on to,” said Peter Hawkins, UNICEF Representative in Nigeria.

They also have better access to economic opportunities for themselves and their families. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has deployed some 1,500 personnel to cover the forthcoming gubernatorial elections in Edo State, slated for Saturday 19 September, 2020, reports ITREALMS.
