Oracle adds 24 new cloud services

The Executive Chairman, Oracle’s Board and Chief Technology Officer (CTO) Larry Ellison has proclaimed new additions to the Oracle Cloud Platform, reports ITRealms.

The Oracle Cloud Platform, ITRealms also reports is a comprehensive, integrated suite of services that make it easier for developers, Information Technology (IT) professionals, business users and analysts to build, extend and integrate cloud applications.

“With more than 24 newcloud services, the Oracle Cloud Platform extends Oracle’s leadership with the world’s broadest and deepest portfolio of SaaS – Software As A Service; Platform as a service (PaaS) and Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS),” he said.

The newly available Oracle Cloud services, he said, include Oracle Database Cloud - Exadata, Oracle Archive Storage Cloud, Oracle Big Data Cloud,Oracle Integration Cloud, Oracle Mobile Cloud, and Oracle Process Cloud.

Ellison explained that the Oracle Cloud Platform helps customers build new applications, extend existing ones, and easily move existing on-premises workloads to the cloud with no application changes. 

In addition, he said, these services are designed to maximize end user experience and productivity which enable developers to manage and analyze data, rapidly develop, test and deploy applications; enable architects to quickly integrate across on-premises and cloud applications; and enable business users to drive rich business insights and enterprise collaboration.

“With the Oracle Cloud Platform, customers and partners are able to take advantage of the industry-leading Oracle middleware and database software that thousands of global organizations already use to run their own businesses, all delivered via cloud. The extensive level of automation that has been engineered into the Oracle Cloud,results in faster time-to-value, greater innovation, and lower cost for customers,” he said, even as Oracle is growing really fast. 

“We sold $426M worth of business in SaaS and PaaS last quarter, a 200 percent increase over the same quarter last year. That's an industry record, no company has ever sold that much in just one quarter,” said Ellison. “Oracle is the only company on the planet that can deliver a complete, integrated, standards-based suite of services at every layer of the cloud. Those technology advantages enable us to be much more cost-effective than our competitors. Our new Archive Storage service goes head-to-head with Amazon Glacier and it’s one-tenth their price,” he said.

Buhari sacks NNPC board with immediate effect

The President, Alhaji Muhammadu Buhari has sacked the board of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) with immediate effect, reports ITRealms.

The directive to that effect was conveyed in a letter signed  and dated today, 26th June 2015 by the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Barr.Danladi Kifasi. 

In a press statement made available to ITRealms endorsed by Director, Communications at the office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Mr. Haruna R. Imrana, disclosed that part of the content was that President expressed thank to members of the dissolved board for their services to the nation.

ITRealms recalls that since the twilight of the former president till now, NNPC has been in the eyes of the public for unbecoming allegations of bribe.

According to industry observers, the dissolution and probing of NNPC will not come to Nigerians as unexpected.

Orangeapple unveils new e-learning product

As part of its Mobile Contents Products and Services Offering, innovative Information Technology Company, Orangeapple Technologies, has at a media launch in Lagos, unveiled its new educational service platform – Easylena, reports ITRealms.

Unveiling the product, the Oratech Management Team, practically demonstrated the Easylena tablet as an e-learning platform that offers smart personal learning tool for Secondary School learners in Nigeria and West Africa.

Speaking on the Oratech concept, Head Project and Admin., Orangeapple, Tunde Sobowale, stated that the company aims at linking people and technology together across many industries and business functions to deliver superior value to its customers, adding that it wish to collaborate with both private and public sectors to build high performance enterprises.

Highlighting the features of the product, Oratech’s Head Business Development and Sales, Oghechi Law-Onyema, stressed that the content is developed in line with the National Education Research and Development Council (NERDC) curriculum, West African Examination Council (WAEC) and Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) syllabi.

She noted that it is compiled into an Android app and bundled on a 16/32 GB Memory card, which can be used on all brands/models of Android phones and tablets – whether branded or off-the-market China brands.

Law-Onyema added that the content provided, includes offline materials as well as online materials.

Fielding answers to questions on the sustainability of the product amongst other industry competitors, Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Orangeapple, Osato Izegbuwa, told ITRealms that with the Easylena Sms feature, which provides a platform for automation of day to day activities the product stands out best against its competitors.

“With this feature, students demographs, grades, scheduling, attendance, students billing, discipline and food service modules for school management will be in one application, as well as an online class which provides a platform for schools, teachers and students to collaborate in real time outside the walls of regular classroom.”

Izegbuwa also called for schools and Non Governmental Organisations (NGO) to partner with the product stating that discounts would be given for such partnership, as it plans another media launch with school stakeholders and NGOs on the products partnership.

NDSF 2015: Etisalat Cliqlite, remedy for examination failures

The Manager, Youth Segment, Etisalat Nigeria, Idiareno Atimomo, has said that Etisalat Cliqlite was designed to promote e-learning in order to enhance students’ overall performance in their examinations, reports ITRealms.

Atimomo, who represented the Vice President, Regulation and Corporate Affairs, Etisalat Nigeria, Mr. Dikko Ibrahim, at the 2015 Nigeria DigitalSENSE Forum on Internet Governance for Development (IG4D) with the theme “Internet Neutrality and Nigerian Internet Users” in Lagos recently, maintained that the company embarked on the Cliqlite platform to renew the interest of the young ones in learning, saying the failure rate in the education system in Nigeria has become alarming.

With student’s performance in Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE), 2014 put at 31.28 per cent pass rate in five subjects or more, including English and Mathematics, which was an indication of a drop from the 38.81 per cent pass rate recorded in 2012 and 36.57 per cent in 2013, Eisalat, ITRealms gathered, has no option as a responsible Corporate citizen than to resort to the designing of Etisalat Cliqlite e-learning platform to ensure better performance by Nigerian pupils and students.

Outside of the set time, the tablet shuts down automatically and can only be opened using the password set by the Parent, ITRealms reports.

He said that parental control is key in the designing of the phone, with www.etisalat.ng/parentalcontrol, the parents, apart from being able to  register the number of calls that can get through the phone, they are also capable of monitoring the site the child can visit, ITRealms’ crew learnt.

Net Neutrality stimulates ISP competition, improves QoS

The Regional Manager, Phase3 Telecommunications Nigeria Limited, Mr. Tayo Mobolade, has stated that Net Neutrality as a framework stimulates Internet Service Provider (ISP) competition and improves Quality of Service (QoS), ITRealms reports.

Mobolade who was addressing an attentive audience on the first day of the 2015 Nigerian DigitalSENSE Africa Media Forum on Internet Governance for Development (IG4D) with the theme: “Net Neutrality and Nigerian Internet Users” said that the technical and economic analysis of the pros and cons of Net Neutrality does make a strong case for the undeserved in Nigeria and indeed the West African sub-region.

He also said “a large fraction of the Nigerian populace that are underprivileged will mostly experience slow network penetration, poor service delivery, unfair/ non-competitive pricing and little broadband investment in their communities,” ITRealms gathered.  

Taking a look at the advantage and disadvantage of Net Neutrality, he challenged all to imagine “a Nigeria where access to vital information on the internet is non- restrictive, where we are not shut out of global business play because we are not trusted or accessible, where the possibilities for innovation and rapid economic development is endless because we enjoy net neutrality that allows us to conduct our businesses online without discrimination.”  

More so, control of Net Neutrality will affect variety of users of the internet at several levels including: emerging businesses, home users, businesses that rely on services over the 

Internet (cloud), educational users (teachers/students) in a negative way, ITRealms reports.

He admonished all to rise to the occasion by actively advocating and giving voice to “Net Neutrality” saying as lead vanguard for protection of internet freedom and equity among users “continuity of purpose” is key!

This, he said, is the best way to ensure healthy competition in Quality of Service (QoS) and the improvement of investment in broadband for service penetration, ITRealms gathered.
