Participants at the Forum were exposed to how industry leaders are using disruptive technologies such as Mobile Internet, Automation of Knowledge and Work, Internet of Things (IoT), Cloud Technology etc. to improve the quality of life for people and redefining business models such as Agritech, FinTech, e-Billing, e-Commerce, e-Governance, e-Payments, transportation, smart city, etc.

The Executive Vice Chairman (EVC) of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Prof. Garba Danbatta, said that through its regulatory excellence, the Commission is at the forefront of unleashing the digital economy that will spur industrial growth, job creation, and Return on Investment (RoI) for investors.

According to him, the internet is at the leading edge of digital revolution, which informed why NCC is supporting operators to deploy more infrastructure.

"Today, Nigeria has started a test-run of 5G, the latest technology for delivering broadband services and such other services as Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI). The trial will last for three months. Nigeria hopes to join other countries which are in a rush to deploy the 5G technology because of its immense promise for digital communication," Danbatta said.

Prof. Danbatta who spoke through Director, Technical Standards and Network Integrity at NCC, Engineer Bako Wakil, also disclosed that the Commission was "at the verge of sending the N65 billion request for supporting the already six infrastructure companies (InfraCos) licensed to roll out broadband infrastructure across the country, to the Federal Executive Council (FEC) for approval."

Meanwhile, Danbatta expressed concurrence of the Commission to the renaming of the Ministry of Communications to 'Federal Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy'.

"The renaming of the Ministry shows a demonstration of the future of telecoms in all government sectors and the economy; the EVC, therefore, commended the Minister, Dr. Isa Pantami and members of the Federal Executive Council for the foresight and dramatic change. This, will spur a new debate and redirect the Ministry and other agencies under it as well as the private sector to a new awakening that digital economy brings," he said.

In a keynote presentation titled: ‘Social and Global Impact: Engaging for Growth’, the Founder/Vice-Chairman of CWG Plc, Mr. Austin Okere, recalled that in 2018, the mobile ecosystem contributed more than $500 billion to the funding of the public sector through general taxation, globally.

According to him, Nigeria as among the three smartphone super-powers to emerge by 2025, stands to benefit from the smartphone ubiquity across the world that enables consumer engagement in numerous use cases

He said, however, slowing unique subscriber growth, regulatory intervention and intense competition continue to put pressure on operators’ traditional mobile revenue.

“Over a fifth of the world’s markets will have launched 5G by 2020, spending combined $244 billion on networks in the process. In 2018, mobile technologies and services generated 4.6% of GDP globally, a contribution that amounted to $3.9 trillion of economic value added.

“The mobile ecosystem also supported almost 32 million jobs (directly and indirectly) and made a substantial contribution to the funding of the public sector, with more than $500 billion raised through general taxation. By 2023, mobile’s contribution will reach

“$4.8 trillion (4.8% of GDP) as countries around the globe increasingly benefit from the improvements in productivity and efficiency brought about by increased take-up of mobile services.

“Further ahead, 5G technologies are expected to contribute $2.2 trillion to the global economy over the next 15 years, with key sectors such as manufacturing, utilities and professional/financial services benefiting the most from the new technology.

“The mobile ecosystem directly employs almost 32 million people globally; 14 million directly and 17 million through related industries.

To this end, Mr. Okere called on State Governments’ to invest in digital economy especially by removing excess taxation on Right of Way (RoW) adding that over the next few years, as the enablers of mobile internet adoption such as infrastructure, affordability, consumer readiness and content/services, continue to improve, millions of people will start using the mobile internet for the first time, and will add value to the nation’s economy.

“Mobile is a powerful tool for achieving the UN’s SDGs: since 2015, impact has increased across all 17 SDGs. 5G is an inevitable network evolution, and will create significant opportunities if the right conditions are in place," he said.

The Managing Director of Rack Centre and Chairman of MoDiTECH2019, Dr. Ayotunde Coker, aligned with Mr. Okere, stressing that content consumption through the mobile channels, is rising hence mobile is a key driver, with more people watching video on their devices for longer and more frequently.

Speaking on the theme: “The Power of Digital Services,” Dr. Coker briefly highlighted the history of the internet and interconnectivity and how it has brought progress to the way businesses and other important economic activities are done in Africa.

Dr. Coker stressed the importance of digitisation on the African continent, and “What it means for us in Africa is to leverage the lots of benefits we can get. Benefits in terms of demographic advantage.”

According to Dr. Coker, “the fourth industrial revolution is the next stage of digitisation with Africa has a focus; survival in the present economic structure is dependent on innovation. The journey of digitisation is now a way of life hence the demand for data has exponentially increased.

In his presentation on ‘Impact of Digital Solutions on Financial Services’ the Managing Director of Global Accelerex, Mr. Tunde Ogungbade, traced the history of banking and financial service provisioning to the 90’s when customers had to be physically present at a bank “in an orderly fashion, with a passbook or cheque” in order to carry out a financial transaction.

Thus, between year 2000 and 2011, were the era of search for utility among banks that engaged in fierce competition for the most branches in localities.

He said that this era was disrupted by internet banking and smart phones that paved the way for 24/7 banking; “Prepaid cards, the POS, the ATMs and then debit cards linked to bank accounts.”

“From 2012 to date we are talking about the search for more utility. This is the era of Web Payments; Mobile Payments; Smart POS Payments; Mobile Money & Agency Banking, Then, BVN changed everything!” he said.

Mr. Ogungbade who was represented by Chief Product Officer, Global Accelerex, Chuks Anakudo, warned the banks to brace-up for more disruptions as payments will even migrate from traditional banking to native apps and point-of-sales solutions.

He said that blockchain technology will further disrupt financial services like the internet did to the media.

“Banks of the future may not need to hold funds in the vault, assets will be digitized in a more secured way. Therefore, the future to behold is closing the gap between what the financial institutions offer and what consumers really need,” said Mr. Ogungbade.

Digital economy: Confab speakers admonish students

The necessity for students to embrace digital opportunities to develop their skills and position for better competition in the labour market topped the agenda of speakers at 2017 edition of the Nigeria Digital Innovation Conference, reports ITRealms.

The event which held recently at the Polytechnic Ibadan was organized by the Centre for Cyber Awareness and Development (CECAD) with representatives of top government Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) in attendance on the theme: ‘Building a new Nigeria in a Digital Economy.

In his presentation, the Executive Vice Chairman (EVC) of the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC), Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta, represented by Head Public Affairs, Mr. Reuben Muoka, noted that the commission via its regulatory activities kept telecos on their toes to make optimal performances certain.

These expectations, he said, are in both voice and data services since their service is also of great importance to driving the new digital economy.

EVC also said that in September 2016, NCC made a detailed presentation of the status and milestones achieved with the 8-Point Agenda conceptualized alongside the aspiration of government for comprehensive economic growth.

“… And our desire to channel available regulatory resources towards achieving availability, accessibility and affordability of telecommunications services, which are mostly being driven today by broadband, and related technologies and services,” he said.

The eight-point agenda, he enumerated to include “Broadband Penetration, Quality of Service Improvement, Optimization of Spectrum Benefits, Promoting ICT Innovations and Investment Opportunities, Strategic Collaborations and Partnerships, Consumer Protection and Empowerment, Promotion of Fair Competition and Inclusive Growth and the Regulatory Excellence and Operational Efficiency.”

The Director-General, NIMC, Aliyu Aziz represented by Mr. Chris Onyekuruka made a presentation entitled “Annexing Data as a Tool for Economic Development & Innovation” pointed out that as a nation, Nigeria needs to ensure accurate data to help in planning, project implementation for social economic gains. 

Also speaking, the President, Nigeria Internet registration Association (NIRA), Revd. Sunday Folayan took participants through the industrial revolutions of the past upto digital revolution which tends to be the biggest of them all.

For ICT consultant and entrepreneur Gbenga Sesan led other innovators in opening up fresh opportunities to the undergraduates. The Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife graduate of Electrical/Electronic related his experience and odyssey in his ICT journey which according to him started about two decades ago as an undergraduate at the OAU.

Other private entrepreneurs present include Mr. Kingsley Roberts (Cyber Security Expert), Akinmade Akintoye of Cloudware Technology, Ahmed Afolabi (Technology Designer).

The Polytechnic Ibadan Rector, Professor Olatunde O Fawole who was represented by the Deputy Rector, Mr. Bayo Oyeleke said the institution as a citadel of technological innovation.

The Student Union Government’s president, Comrade Kuyoro Olumuyiwa Emmanuel also on behalf of the students applauded CECAD.

The Director of Operations and Strategies at CECAD, Mr. Hilary Damissah said, the importance of broadband internet access and its affordability were critical to sustainable digital innovation, hence CECAD remain committed to creating avenues that will further help articulate more awareness and opportunities. He further said that Prof. Oguntona was a graduate of University of Ibadan with a degree on Agricultural Biochemistry and Nutrition in 1970 and holds in addition, M. Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Nutrition from the Universities of London and Nottingham respectively.

Oguntona, he said, was a pioneer professor at the University of Agriculture Abeokuta (UNAAB) in 1988, and has headed Department, Dean of College and Centre Director. In 2006 he was made Dean of Faculty of Agriculture and Rural Development (FAMARD) at the Olabisi Onabanjo University (Ayetoro Campus).

Prof. Oguntona has trained hundreds of students at both undergraduate and post graduate levels over the past 36 years. He season author of both national and international, including co-authoring of the report on National Food Consumption and Nutritional Status, and the principal author of Nigerian Food Composition Table.

A Nutrition consultant to the Federal Ministry of Health for 22 years, Prof. Oguntona and has consulted for several governments  including Ghana, Liberia, Tanzania, Sierra Leone and Zambia as well as for some International Agencies, among other organizations.

A recipient of many distinguished International awards on Nutrition including BP Protein, Leverhulme Trust, ACU/Carnagie Corporation, to name a few, having been a Professor of Nutrition since 1990, he is a member of many professional and social organisations. He is the past president of the Nutrition Society of Nigeria and a fellow of that society. He is presently the Chair of Nigeria Beverage Panel and is married to Professor Clara Raquel Oguntona.

MeCAM, he said, is peopled exclusively by journalists, and mediapreneurs to push the narratives to save the Nigerian child from the danger of malnutrition through scaling up reporting and advocacy, among others.

Peter Obi, Ekeh top speakers @ESUT-Yudala enterpreneurship summit

E-PPAN lines up speakers for eGovt Summit 2016

The E-Payment Providers Association of Nigeria (E-PPAN) has lined up speakers for its fifth annual electronic Government summit, slated for Abuja next month, September, reports ITRealms.

The line-up includes chief executive officers of Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), according to the Executive Secretary of E-PPAN, Mrs. Regha Onajite who disclosed this to ITRealms.

A press statement made available to ITRealms and endorsed by Mrs. Onajite, said they have set up high profile speakers comprising top government and private sector executives expected at this year’s edition of the annual E-Government Summit 2016, scheduled for 27th -28th September, at the NAF Conference Centre Abuja.

ITRealms gathered that the summit is hosted in collaboration with the Central Bank of Nigeria and National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), with the support and sponsorship of Galaxy Backbone (GB) Plc, Fidelity Bank Plc, Visa Inc and Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS). 

Onajite noted that the two-day intensive dialogue session, will form an assemblage of over 500 top decision makers in government and private sector on a single platform.

“The two days event will play host to a lot of top speakers including the Corps Marshal and CEO of Federal Road Safety Corps/, Boboyo Oyeyemi, who will be speaking on Data Integration and Analysis, for Strategic Economic Development alongside the co-Founder/Lead Partner BudgIT, Mr. Oluseun Onigbinde.

“Also, the Managing Director of Galaxy Backbone Plc, Malam Yusuf Kazaure,  will present a lead paper on ‘Smart Government Through Shared Services Model’ and Macauley Atasie, the Managing Director of Nextzon Business Services, will also throw more light on the topic. The Head Financial Inclusion Secretariat at Central Bank of Nigeria, Mrs. Temitope Akin-Fadeyi, will speak extensively on Adopting the Financial Inclusion Roadmap for Improved Economy and Good Governance together with the Divisional CEO, Interswitch Financial Inclusion, Mike Ogbalu III," she said.
