Electronic fraud tops agenda at E-PPAN, CBN conference

The alarming growth of electronic frauds is on top of the agenda at the forthcoming annual Payment Systems and Fraud Conference slated for next month in Lagos, reports ITRealms.

Industry observers recall that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and key stakeholders focused searchlight on efraud which allegedly caused the loss of over N4 billion in the country.

ITRealms recalls that with over N30 trillion transactions carried out on different e-payment channels by businesses and individuals in the country, stakeholders have expressed worries over cases of e-fraud, which they said discouraging some people financial inclusion.

Reliable sources at the Nigerian Interbank Settlements System Plc. (NIBSS) revealed to ITRealms that over N4 billion was lost to cases of e-frauds in 2015 alone.

ITRealms also reports that the conference with the theme: ‘E-Payment Fraud: People, Process and Technology’ would hold at the Civic Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos on November 8, this year.

For the Chief Executive Officer, E-PPAN, Mrs. Regha Onajite, the conference has been designed to be a veritable rallying ground for the financial industry to deliberate on payment systems and fraud knowledge in West Africa.

“This event will bring together senior level officers of the fintech sector, banking, regulatory bodies and public officers. Our core focus on this years’ edition is to tackle fraud in a proactive and top-down approach that involves people, process and technology. This will help create effective combats against the activities of the e-payment fraudsters in Nigeria,” she said.

Explaining specific objectives of the conference, she said the conference address the challenges posed by people’s laxity in divulging and compromising organisation information system to fraudsters.

“It will also re-appraise, reconnect and tackle the processes that compromised the entire system of e-payment hemisphere in Nigeria, and fashion out how organisations can invest in and deploy the right technologies to enable the industry be a step ahead of these criminals,” she said.

Onajite added that E-PPAN partners at this year’s event, apart from the CBN, include the Nigerian Electronic Fraud Forum (Neff), Committee of –Banking Head (CeBIH), Committee of Chief Compliance Officers of Banks in Nigeria (CCCOBIN), Information Security Society of Nigeria (ISSAN) and the Association of Chief Audit Executives of Banks in Nigeria (ACAEBIN), among others.


She said attendance for the conference was free urging persons to register for the event, which, she said, would be a melting pot of ideas to proffer solutions to the cases of e-fraud in the nation’s e-payment industry.

E-PPAN lines up speakers for eGovt Summit 2016

The E-Payment Providers Association of Nigeria (E-PPAN) has lined up speakers for its fifth annual electronic Government summit, slated for Abuja next month, September, reports ITRealms.

The line-up includes chief executive officers of Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), according to the Executive Secretary of E-PPAN, Mrs. Regha Onajite who disclosed this to ITRealms.

A press statement made available to ITRealms and endorsed by Mrs. Onajite, said they have set up high profile speakers comprising top government and private sector executives expected at this year’s edition of the annual E-Government Summit 2016, scheduled for 27th -28th September, at the NAF Conference Centre Abuja.

ITRealms gathered that the summit is hosted in collaboration with the Central Bank of Nigeria and National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), with the support and sponsorship of Galaxy Backbone (GB) Plc, Fidelity Bank Plc, Visa Inc and Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS). 

Onajite noted that the two-day intensive dialogue session, will form an assemblage of over 500 top decision makers in government and private sector on a single platform.

Stakeholders, she said, would brainstorm to proffer solutions and proactive measures for Government to generate and increase internally-generated revenue (IGR) using smart solutions while achieving transparency and accountability amongst expected deliverables.

“The two days event will play host to a lot of top speakers including the Corps Marshal and CEO of Federal Road Safety Corps/, Boboyo Oyeyemi, who will be speaking on Data Integration and Analysis, for Strategic Economic Development alongside the co-Founder/Lead Partner BudgIT, Mr. Oluseun Onigbinde.

“Also, the Managing Director of Galaxy Backbone Plc, Malam Yusuf Kazaure,  will present a lead paper on ‘Smart Government Through Shared Services Model’ and Macauley Atasie, the Managing Director of Nextzon Business Services, will also throw more light on the topic. The Head Financial Inclusion Secretariat at Central Bank of Nigeria, Mrs. Temitope Akin-Fadeyi, will speak extensively on Adopting the Financial Inclusion Roadmap for Improved Economy and Good Governance together with the Divisional CEO, Interswitch Financial Inclusion, Mike Ogbalu III," she said.

Other speakers invited to add value to the event include the Managing Director ,NIBSS, Mr. Ade Shonubi; Managing Director, Interswitch Limited, Mr. Mitchell Elegbe; Managing Director, Paga Mr. Tayo Oviosu; Managing Director SystemSpecs Limited, Dr. John Obaro; and Head, Shared Services Office at CBN, Mr. Chidi Umeano.

They also include the Director, FSS2020 Secretariat, CBN, Mr. Mohammed Suleyman; Country Manager, Hewlett-Packard Nigeria Limited, Mrs Ify Afe; Managing Director, Samsung West Africa, Mr. Idorenyen Enang; Country General Manager, IBM West Africa,  Mr. Taiwo Otiti  and the Chief Operating Officer of Digital Encode, Mr. Wale Obadare, amongst others.

E-PPAN Signs Pact with FSS 2020 on Africa’s e-Gov Summit

Electronic Payment Providers Association of Nigeria (E-PPAN) has entered into partnership with the Financial System Strategy 2020 (FSS 2020) to host Africa’s biggest e-Government Summit on July 7 and 8, in Abuja, reports ITRealms.

E-PPAN and the FSS 2020 secretariat, ITRealms gathered, are now set to make this year’s event the biggest E-government summit in Africa. The partnership will allow the summit enjoy a robust and rich program schedule which will cover a variety of issues attracting high level of participations from the private sector, government and international audience.

The summit will run concurrent sector specific workshop sessions. These sessions will address issues such as how MSME can be used for employment generation using ICT platforms; the use of electronic channels to complement the growth enhancement scheme in the Agricultural sector; the payment system in respect of the cashless Nigeria initiative and the PSV 2020.

Other sectors to be covered by the summit include pension, insurance and mortgage. The interconnection of these sectors with ICT will drive a generation of e-services in the public sector. In addition, the E-government summit will provide the platform to create awareness on various achievements of the FSS 2020 and celebrate other big strides in the private and public sector in the area of ICT, ITRealms learnt.

The conference will allow exhibitions from participating organizations to showcase arrays of products and services, which will drive a citizen-centric e-services that is centred on improving efficiency in government service delivery, and foster greater collaboration between the private and public sector for sustainable development and economic growth.

ITRealms learnt that the Financial System Strategy (FSS 2020) is an initiative of the Federal Government of Nigeria aimed at developing a coherent and internally consistent blueprint to develop Nigeria’s financial system to help achieve its vision to become a major international financial centre and one of the top 20 largest economies in the world by the year 2020.
