Sophos report showcases 2020 cyberthreat impacts - ITREALMS

Leader in cloud-enabled next-generation cybersecurity, Sophos has launched its 2020 Threat Report providing insights into the rapidly evolving cyberthreats landscape, reports ITREALMS.

The latest report,
ITREALMS gathered, was produced by SophosLabs researchers, and explored changes in the threat landscape over the past 12 months, uncovering trends likely to impact cybersecurity in 2020.

“The threat landscape continues to evolve – and the speed and extent of that evolution is both accelerating and unpredictable. The only certainty we have is what is happening right now, so in our 2020 Threat Report we look at how current trends might impact the world over the coming year. We highlight how adversaries are becoming ever stealthier, better at exploiting mistakes, hiding their activities and evading detection technologies, and more, in the cloud, through mobile apps and inside networks. The 2020 Threat Report is not so much a map as a series of signposts to help defenders better understand what they could face in the months ahead, and how to prepare,” said John Shier, senior security advisor, Sophos.

The SophosLabs 2020 Threat Report, which is also summarized in a SophosLabs Uncut article, focuses on six areas where researchers noted particular developments during this past year. Among those expected to have significant impact on the cyberthreat landscape into 2020 and beyond are the following:

Ransomware attackers continue to raise the stakes with automated active attacks that turn organizations’ trusted management tools against them, evade security controls and disable back ups in order to cause maximum impact in the shortest possible time.

Unwanted apps are edging closer to malware. In a year that brought the subscription-abusing Android Fleeceware apps, and ever more stealthy and aggressive adware, the Threat Report highlights how these and other potentially unwanted apps (PUA), like browser plug-ins, are becoming brokers for delivering and executing malware and fileless attacks.

The greatest vulnerability for cloud computing is misconfiguration by operators. As cloud systems become more complex and more flexible, operator error is a growing risk. Combined with a general lack of visibility, this makes cloud computing environments a ready made target for cyberattackers.

Machine learning designed to defeat malware finds itself under attack. 2019 was the year when the potential of attacks against machine learning security systems were highlighted. Research showed how machine learning detection models could possibly be tricked, and how machine learning could be applied to offensive activity to generate highly convincing fake content for social engineering. At the same time, defenders are applying machine learning to language as a way to detect malicious emails and URLs. This advanced game of cat and mouse is expected to become more prevalent in the future.

Other areas covered in the 2020 Threat Report include the danger of failing to spot cybercriminal reconnaissance hidden in the wider noise of internet scanning, the continuing attack surface of the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP), and the further advancement of automated active attacks (AAA).

Minister showcases PMB achievements, slams opposition

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has slammed the country's political opposition for downplaying the unprecedented achievements of the Buhari Administration, saying they are being deliberately and perpetually blind to the achievements, reports ITRealms.

The Minister made the assertion while inaugurating the 22-member newly-elected Governing Council of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), under the chairmanship of Mallam Mukhtar Sirajo, in Abuja on Thursday.

He described the opposition as unserious, very disdainful of the truth, lacks ideas and believes that being in opposition means crying wolf where there is none and spewing out fake information at the speed of light!

''Where is the seriousness in an opposition party throwing out a spurious figure of N10 trillion as the amount of money that has been looted under the present administration? What is Nigeria's annual national budget? How do you react to an opposition that is deliberately and perpetually blind to the monumental achievements of this Administration?'' Alhaji Mohammed queried.

He said while naysayers might pretend not to have seen all these achievements, ''Nigerians who are benefitting directly from them have testified to the reality of the successes.''
Listing some of the achievements of the Administration, the Minister said it had taken power generation from 2,690MW to 7,000MW, moved Nigeria closer to self-sufficiency in rice than any Administration before it, increased the number of rice farmers from 5 million to an all-time high over 11 million and cut Nigeria's rice import bill of $1.65 billion annually by 90%.

''We are feeding 8.2 million pupils in 45,394 schools in 24 states, employing 87,261 cooks in the process; we are paying conditional cash transfer of N5,000 monthly to 297,973 poorest and most vulnerable households, never before done in Nigeria; we are building roads, rail and power, spending an unprecedented 2.7 trillion Naira on infrastructure alone in just two years; we have raised capital expenditure in the yearly national budget to an unprecedented 30% on the average, our Social Investment Programmes have benefitted 9 million people.

''The school children who are being fed, the unemployed graduate who has now been employed under N-Power; the small business owner who has benefitted from the GEEP loans and the thousands of people who have been rescued from the clutches of Boko Haram know that these achievements are real,'' he said.

Alhaji Mohammed said the economy is also back on the path of growth, after the recession of 2016-17, ''and we have the figures to support this assertion''.

He said the economy grew 1.95 percent in Q1 2018; Inflation has fallen for 15 consecutive months, from 18.7 percent to12.5 percent as of April 2018; External Reserves of $48 billion are the highest in 5 years; Total exports in 2017 were 59.47% higher than for 2016; Agriculture exports grew 180.7% above the value in 2016; Raw material exports grew 154.2% above the value in 2016; Solid minerals exports grew 154.2% above the value in 2016; Exports of manufactured goods grew 26.8% above the value in 2016, And the first quarter of 2018 saw the fourth consecutive quarterly increase in capital importation since Q2 2017.

Lenovo showcases Yoga Book tablet

The Lenovo  has showcased its latest in shelf, Yoga Book tablet, the acclaimed world’s thinnest and lightest 2-in-1 tablet, designed for unmatched productivity while on-the-go, reports ITRealms.

Proclaimed as built for mobility and to solve the most common challenge among tablet users on how to achieve productivity and entertainment in one device, ITRealms gathered that Yoga Book stands out as a tablet that looks and acts like no other.

Vice president and general manager, Android and Chrome Computing at Lenovo, Jeff Meredith, said with this Yoga Book tablet, they are set out to redefine the tablet category conundrum, namely that consumers no longer separate their activities into productivity and entertainment, because it all blends together.

“The Yoga Book introduces keyboard and handwriting input capability in an elegantly simple, unconventionally slender tablet design. We believe our unique design will offer tablet, 2-in-1 and traditional notebook buyers a first-of-its-kind option for evolving usage trends,” Meredith said.

ITRealms gathered that up until now, most people have been using tablets in ways never meant to, mainly for productivity, which becomes painful when typing or applying a stylus onto a touch screen that one may be using on-the-go.

But with the coming of Yoga Book, ITRealms further gathered, removed those difficulties by taking the fundamental building blocks from the DNA of what makes a great tablet namely portability, long battery life and a rich app ecosystem as well as entwines it into a strand of creativity and productivity through a suite of powerful new hardware and software features.

These ITRealms learnt, comprise having the instant halo keyboard, dual-use stylus that writes on paper and screen, productivity-driven Book User Interface (UI).
