Sanwo-Olu tasks graduands on tech-skills @MTU - ITREALMS

The Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has called on graduating students to add technology driven skills to their primary course of study to compete favourably in the labour market, reports ITREALMS.

Sanwo-Olu gave the advice on Friday at the maiden graduation ceremony of the Mountain Top University (MTU) in Ibafo, Ogun State.

The governor delivered a lecture titled, ‘Future of Job and the World of Work: The Need for Graduates That are Globally Competitive’.

According to him, the knowledge acquired in the university will become obsolete in a short, while the graduands needed continuous advancement.

To be ready for the future, he urged the graduating students to embrace technology driven skills as jobs of the future will be driven by such.

”Many of the things you learnt in the university will have become obsolete even before you complete the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

”This is the truth. 50 or 100 years ago, we didn’t know that new technologies would have emerged to shape the world as we knew it.

”It is certain that to thrive in that world, university graduates will need to be fully prepared.

“They will need to be educated in the tools and the languages of that world and will need to have capacity to compete with other graduates in the quest for jobs and employment.

”We must also extend this to curriculum transformation. We will not progress in the 21st century using 20th century curricula.

”Our young people must become comfortable with coding, robotics, 3D printing and other technologies from an early age, especially in the public school system.

”Regardless of what academic track our students are on: arts, sciences or social sciences, technological literacy must be a common denominator,” Sanwo-olu said.

He said that students must commit themselves to life-long learning as they would be judged not only by what they know, but also how quickly they could learn new things.

Sanwo-olu said that technology had made it easier for users to find job opportunities outside their immediate environment.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Elijah Ayolabi, called on the students to be good ambassadors of the institution.

Ayolabi said that the students were “the firstborn, pride of the institution and the symbol of its strength”.

”What you do with the training you got is your sole responsibility. I charge you today, therefore, to remember the responsibility placed on your shoulders as the first children of MTU,” he said.
The university graduated a total of 120 students, 22 among them bagged First Class Honours in various disciplines.

Broadband challenges top NITRA Forum, as NCC, ALTON Lineup - ITREALMS

The Nigeria Information Technology Reporters’ Association (NITRA) Quarterly Forum has concluded plans to host the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and Association Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) to its Quarterly Forum with focus on broadband challenges, reports ITREALMS.

The forum, ITREALMS gathered, has been slated for Friday, December 14, 2018, at the CitiHeight Hotel, Opebi Link, Ikeja, Lagos.

NITRA, under the supervision of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, is an umbrella body for journalists reporting information and communications technology in Nigeria.

In collaboration with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the Association of Licensed Telecoms Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), NITRA promises to address the challenges of broadband, especially with last mile connectivity, at this fourth quarter forum.

The Executive Vice Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta is the keynote speaker at the event expected to draw the largest gathering of ICT industry players under one roof.

Themed: “Achieving Last Mile Connectivity Through Affordable Broadband,” the forum will not only highlight the opportunities and challenges of deploying affordable broadband in Nigeria but will look at the strategies being adopted by the NCC to achieve this.

Experts argue that in order to address Nigeria’s last mile connectivity, it’s important that the Government creates incentives that would encourage telcos to invest in connectivity in rural areas and other less profitable regions.

Achieving last mile connectivity in Nigeria, therefore, requires a concerted effort among Government, Civil Society Organizations, Policy makers, mobile operators, service providers, academia etc. It also requires a combination of solutions ranging from policies to technologies, transparency to regulations etc.

Recall that the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) had in 2016, rolled out an 8-point agenda aimed at broadband access and penetration. Through the agenda, the NCC hopes to promote deployment of universally available, fast and reliable network infrastructure that will stimulate seamless broadband penetration to drive technology innovation and overall productivity of Nigeria’s economy.

In the last two years, NITRA has through the Quarterly forum engaged ICT stakeholders to brainstorm on various topical issues affecting the ICT industry in Nigeria.

Nnamani urges Nigeria to outline top 10 priorities on cyber security readiness for digital transformation - ITREALMS

The President of Medallion Communications Limited, Mr. Ike Nnamani has urged Nigeria to emulate Uganda on her top 10 priorities for 2018 on cyber security readiness for digital transformation, reports ITREALMS.

Nnamani, who spoke at the 2018 eWorld Forum on the subtheme "Nigeria's Readiness for Digital Transformation - Cyber Security Readiness" in Lagos, prescribing a top 10 agenda for the country, just like Uganda has outlined.

The top 10 prescription by Nnamani includes database security, introduction of Privileged User Management (PUM), Patch Management, Unstructured Data Management, Endpoint Security, Employee Security Awareness, Vendor/Third Party security, board changing role, security architecture cum engineer skill set and continues monitoring, based on the 2017 Cyber Security Report by Serianu.

As said by him, Nigeria needs to secure its vault by leveraging database security, lamenting that banking sector is still the most targeted industry in the country.

He also explained that PUM for instance, will define who has access to the crown jewels, whereas Patch Management will determine what to patch or not to patch, stressing that by unstructured data management, there is no one size fits all solution for any country, pointing out that via endpoint security, cybe security will have a front-line of actions expressed established.

In addition, Nnamani pointed out that employee security awareness cannot be over-emphasised because ignorance is not bliss in every business let alone when it comes to cyber security, advising that vendor and third party security must be encouraged to bring on their own vulnerability findings and solutions.

The board, he said, must be abreast of changing roles and centrality of cyber security in an organization and when changes begin to occur it should trickle down the ladder of leadership, even as the security architecture cum engineer skill set must be widen to keep employee alive to their responsibilities and upto date on skill sets, without necessarily forgetting the essence of continuous monitoring of the system.

He declared that ‘vigilance’ is the second name of cyber security.

The aforementioned, he said, if adhered to strictly, that Nigeria will emerge from being top victim on cyber security gaps to closing the gaps immensely.

Top 5 impacts of Konga, Yudala merger

The Information and Communication Technology (ICT) industry watchers at ITRealms, have been keen on the examination of key impacts of the recent merger between Konga and Yudala, summed up in five pointers.

Despite significant optimism of an unprecedented upsurge in global e-commerce spend which is widely expected to gross $4.058 trillion or 14.6 per cent of total retail spending by 2020, e-commerce in Nigeria and on the African continent is still largely untapped.

Till date, majority of players in the sector are locked in a battle of attrition in their bid to turn profitable. Many others have lost the battle and quietly exited the scene. The list of such failed ventures is seemingly endless.

Recently, an operational merger between two e-commerce giants, Konga and Yudala was announced – a piece of news that has dominated headlines for the past one week.

According to the official announcement released by the management of both companies, the business merger, which takes effect from Tuesday May 1st 2018, will see both companies operate under the Konga brand name and with dual CEOs in the persons of Nick Imudia who will be in charge of online among others and Prince Nnamdi Ekeh who will be responsible for the offline arm of the business.

Founded in 2012, Konga has featured prominently in the news in the past couple of months following its acquisition by Nigerian tech giants, Zinox Group, after months of intense negotiation with the company’s erstwhile majority investors, Naspers and AB Kinnevik.

A merger between Konga and Yudala is a master strategy that undoubtedly has the potential of finally cracking the e-commerce bug in Nigeria and beyond.
Here are five reasons why:

Strongest e-commerce force in Africa: The merger between Konga and Yudala has ultimately transformed the new Konga brand into a strong e-commerce group, arguably the biggest on the African continent. By virtue of the shared resources that will naturally benefit the brand from the merger including sheer size, human resources capacity, massive warehousing capabilities, increased reach and wider array of products, services and offerings at its disposal, industry watchers and other experts are unanimous in their position that Konga can finally rise as an e-commerce force that can rival some of the world’s biggest such as Amazon and Alibaba.
Improved customer experience: One of the major obstacles that has prevented e-commerce from taking off in Nigeria is shoddy customer experience. With Konga and Yudala merging operations, there is renewed hope for the average customer, especially when one considers a fusion of Konga’s world-class online platform and Yudala’s ubiquitous network of physical stores. Both platforms are efficient, highly responsive and respectively best in class in the industry. With this merger, perhaps, the time has come to look forward to a highly improved shopping experience, one that has largely eluded many in the industry.

Cutting-edge Technology: Konga is primarily a technology company, one that has invested heavily in technology and crucially reliant on cutting-edge tech to drive its operations.  By merging forces with Yudala, another technology-driven business and leveraging on the huge access to technology at the disposal of its parent company, the Zinox Group, there is a golden opportunity to improve the ease and convenience of the shopping experience, a factor that has recurrently featured as one of the pain-points of e-commerce.  Through the deployment of technology in automating most of the processes that have previously encumbered shoppers, including products classification, stocking, check-outs, logistics and delivery, among others, a fresh dawn seems imminent for e-commerce in Nigeria. Should the new brand live up to expectations by deploying a predominantly automated, user-friendly range of cutting-edge tech solutions, it will succeed in creating a frictionless e-commerce experience that will set a standard for the continent.

Better logistics/delivery: Many e-commerce companies across Africa leave a lot to be desired when it comes to service level expectations in logistics/delivery. Items take days or even weeks to get to the final user, even in urban city centres, leading to a situation in which many potential shoppers would rather prefer to visit a physical/brick-and-mortar store to purchase or personally pick-up their items.  In Konga Express, Konga boasts an excellent logistics company with advanced delivery capabilities for internal and external customers. Through the expected new investment that will come in through the Yudala merger, shoppers can finally look forward to a more reliable delivery option. Further lending a sense of excitement is the multiple pick-up locations which Yudala’s nationwide network of store locations offers.

Overcoming distrust by cracking mobile payments: Trust remains a major issue that has kept e-commerce in Africa from reaching its much-vaunted potential. A number of potential shoppers are wary of scams, a legitimate concern which prevents many from disclosing their credit/debit card/financial information and buying online. Although Konga announced a ban on payment on delivery (POD) before its acquisition by the Zinox Group, there are possibilities that this policy could be rescinded in the light of the merger with Yudala. Furthermore, through Konga Pay, a CBN-licensed mobile money platform, Konga has a fitting tool with which to crack the mobile payment bug. By positioning Konga Pay prominently as a secure platform and doing the hard work at the back-end to assure online transactions are effortlessly and safely carried out, e-commerce may just be on the verge of exploding in Nigeria and beyond.

Yudala to top Africa’s eCommerce profitability index

The Vice President of Yudala, pioneer online and offline e-commerce outfit, Prince Nnamdi Ekeh, has predicted that the company is set to top Africa’s electronic commerce (eCommerce) industry on the path of profitability by 2020, reports ITRealms.

This, ITRealms gathered would mark the first five years of operations of Yudala.

Speaking on the sidelines of Unusual Praise 2017, a gospel concert hosted by the Catholic Church of Divine Mercy in Lekki, Prince Ekeh noted that the facts and figures on ground show that Yudala is on track to set another record in its journey in the Nigerian e-commerce industry.

“At Yudala, our strategy is clear and distinct from anything else on offer in the market today. Our fusion of online and offline is not only futuristic, but one that has being copied by other global e-commerce giants. On the back of this, we have seen a consistent growth trajectory that will see Yudala emerge as the first profitable Nigerian e-commerce company by 2020,” Prince Ekeh said.

He further said, “… We are renowned as arguably the most credible source of genuine products in the e-commerce sub-sector today. Every item on the Yudala platform, online or offline, is sourced directly from the manufacturers and this has clearly distinguished the Yudala brand in the marketplace.

“In addition, we possess superior logistics and delivery timelines that have endeared us to shoppers. As a result, we have consistently seen repeat purchases from our customers. In most cases, we have also been able to win over new shoppers, the majority of whom, having patronized other platforms, have not looked back since their first experience of Yudala. Aligned to the foregoing is the passionate, committed and highly professional team we have in the company, all of whom have continuously displayed the hunger and capacity to deliver on our mandate.

“Finally, we have God. You will agree with me that, with all these factors in place, the sky is just the starting point for us,” he enthused.

When asked if Yudala will follow the example set with Unusual Praise by supporting other religious concerts in future, Prince Ekeh revealed that the company will be sponsoring about five other concerts in 2018.

“We have a budget for these events and in 2018, we will be supporting other religious events, including Islamic ones. Yudala is a platform for all and we respect the diversity of faith we have in the country,” he said.

Launched a little over two years ago, Yudala has more than held its own in Nigeria’s keenly-competitive e-commerce sector, with the company’s futuristic fusion of an online platform with a chain of brick-and-mortar stores located nationwide instantly setting it apart from inception.

And despite the well-known struggles of other established players in the sector, Yudala has continued to post impressive results, a trend that has seen optimism of the company soon turning the corner of profitability.

Continuing, he noted: “We are aware of the challenges faced by players in the e-commerce sector. Research at our disposal indicates that less than 30 per cent of African e-commerce startups are profitable, with many of them hampered by lack of trust, shortage of financing, logistical difficulties and the largely-traditional approach to shopping still in play among these economies.

“Here in Nigeria, the case is hardly different as we have seen many e-commerce start-ups exit the scene prematurely while the older ones have also consistently posted huge losses.

“However, the story is different at Yudala. This is down mainly to our sound business model and approach. Indeed, while our investors expect us to deliver profits by 2022, our ambition is to surprise them by achieving this milestone earlier,” he concluded.

Apart from its ambitious retail roll-out strategy and network of physical stores which has helped the company reach many unserved and under-served members of Nigeria’s over 190 million population, Yudala has also been bold in making a statement of intent with its emphasis on genuine products and best prices, aligned to a number of landmark innovations and eye-catching strategies which has endeared it to an ever-growing audience.

In addition to pulling off the first recorded instance of a product delivery via drone in 2015 – a feat which captured the imagination of the e-commerce world - Yudala has succeeded in building up a steadily growing database of loyal customers, many of whom have come to rely on the company for the assurance of genuine products and unmatched best prices in the market-place which it stands for.

Earlier in 2017, the company acquired Yes Mobile, a cosmopolitan high-value retail outfit with a multiplicity of stores in Lagos in what industry watchers described as a strategic duplex acquisition; one which went a long way in showing the level of ambition and determination to lead in the retail space currently driving the company.
