The ongoing case of the detained leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has continued to provoke intense emotions and divisions. Yet, beyond the politics and passions lies a deeper question of justice, professionalism, and public trust; values that define any credible democracy.

Recent concerns raised regarding the alleged handling of medical reports on Kanu’s health condition deserve serious attention. Reports indicated that the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), despite a court directive to examine Kanu, may not have visited or physically assessed him before a health report was submitted.

If true, such a breach would not only undermine the court’s authority but also erode confidence in the medical profession’s independence and ethical duty.

Further troubling are claims that the said medical report was withheld from Kanu’s lawyers until the very day it was presented in court. This, if verified, points to procedural irregularities that weaken faith in both justice administration and institutional transparency.

As professionals, be you journalists, editors, doctors, and civic leaders, we must resist the temptation of silence or partisanship. Justice is not a favor granted to the popular or the powerful; it is a right owed to every citizen, regardless of ideology.

The NMA, as a respected body of health professionals, owes Nigerians clarity. The association should publicly confirm whether it indeed examined Kanu as ordered by the court, and whether the report truly reflects the findings of its members.
