The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has congratulated Mr. Danlami Nmodu, publisher of Newsdiary Online, on his election as President of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP) following a keenly contested poll held recently in Lagos.
“Mr. Nmodu, with whom I have had a long-standing personal and professional relationship, has proved his mettle in the media industry and is truly deserving of this commanding leadership role,” Idris stated.
He also commended the immediate past GOCOP President, Dr. Maureen Chigbo, publisher of RealNews Online, for what he described as “vibrant and purposeful leadership that steered the Guild to remarkable growth, honour, and credibility.”
The Minister urged the new GOCOP executive to consolidate on these achievements by fostering unity, inclusiveness, and collaboration among members.
“As I congratulate Nmodu, I urge him to lead an inclusive administration that ensures active participation of all members in advancing the collective aspirations of the Guild,” he said.
Idris further charged the new leadership to remain steadfast in combating the spread of fake news, misinformation, and disinformation, which he noted “continue to threaten the credibility and trust in journalism.”
He pledged the Ministry’s readiness to collaborate with GOCOP in promoting media and information literacy across the country, emphasizing that such partnership is vital to strengthening public trust and accountability in the digital media ecosystem.
“I have no doubt that Mr. Nmodu, whose career has been defined by integrity, accountability, and resilience, will bring these same values to bear in partnering with government to uphold the standards of ethical journalism in Nigeria,” Idris declared.
