But what genuine creativity lies in "tattered jeans," "transparent wears," or "bomb shorts" within the hallowed grounds of academia?
These are not expressions of genius; they are often symptomatic of a lack of respect for oneself, for the institution, and for the serious business of learning.
OAU’s firm hand in banning such attire, along with "heavy make-ups" and "rumpled and dirty clothes," is a necessary corrective. It sends a clear message: this is a university, not a casual hangout spot or a social media stage.
The regulations concerning "coloured hair styles," "hair braiding for male," and "spangled hair" are equally crucial. While some might cry foul about stifling personal identity, the reality is that such flamboyant styles can be a distraction in a learning environment and often reflect a priority given to superficial appearance over substantive engagement.
The university's role extends beyond delivering lectures; it is to shape well-rounded, disciplined individuals prepared for the rigors of professional life, where often, a certain level of decorum in appearance is expected.
Beyond appearance, the university's decisive action against "unwholesome touching, kissing and hugging of opposite sex" and "massaging or sitting on the lap opposite sex" is particularly commendable.
In an increasingly libertine society, OAU is drawing a much-needed line in the sand against public indecency. These are not minor infractions; they erode the moral fabric of the campus community and can create an uncomfortable or even unsafe environment for others.
The university is acting in loco parentis, and OAU, likewise other tertiary institutions in this part of the world, have a duty to instill discipline. When young people lose their way in the maze of modern trends, it is the responsibility of authoritative institutions to guide them back.
