The UBA Foundation, corporate social responsibility arm of the United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc, has announced that winners of the 2025 edition of its annual National Essay Competition (NEC) will receive educational grants worth over ₦22.5 million to study at any African university of their choice, reports ITREALMS.
In addition, the 12 finalists with the best essays will each receive brand-new laptops and other educational tools to aid their research and studies.
The NEC, a flagship education initiative of the UBA Foundation, aims to promote literacy and encourage healthy intellectual competition among senior secondary school students in Nigeria and across Africa.
For the 2025 edition, participants are required to write on the topic:
“Nigeria is characterised by diverse cultures, ethnicities, and religions. How can young Nigerians deploy diversity to build a united nation?”
Speaking on the significance of the competition, the Managing Director/CEO of UBA Foundation, Bola Atta, said the Foundation’s continued investment in education underscores its commitment to nurturing young talent and easing the financial burden of higher education.
“The deliberate and significant increase in the value of these educational grants underscores our dedication to investing in academic excellence and alleviating the financial burden of higher education for Nigerian students and their families. We are confident that this will further inspire a culture of academic achievement and critical thinking,” Atta stated.
She reaffirmed the Foundation’s commitment to creating impactful opportunities for African youth, whom she described as “the future of the continent.”
To be eligible, entrants must be Nigerian senior secondary school students and are required to submit scanned handwritten essays (not exceeding 750 words), along with a passport photograph and a valid birth certificate, National ID, or international passport.
Entries, ITREALMS gathered, must be submitted via the UBA Foundation portal at ubagroup.com/uba-foundation/national-essay-competition or by scanning the QR code provided on official flyers and digital platforms.
The deadline for submission, ITREALMS further gathered, is Friday, October 17, 2025.
