The three-day regional conference on Information Integrity in West Africa and the Sahel, which ended recently in Praia, Cabo Verde, adopted the new instruments designed to strengthen information ecosystems across the region known as the Policy Framework and Action Plan, reports ITREALMS Online.
At the close of proceedings, participants endorsed a comprehensive Policy Framework on Information Integrity.
The framework, spanning nineteen pages, sets out guiding principles for protecting the integrity of information environments while safeguarding human rights, ensuring transparency and accountability, and promoting freedom of expression and access to information.
In addition to the policy framework, the conference adopted the Praia Action Plan for Information Integrity in West Africa and the Sahel, which provides a roadmap for translating commitments into action at national and regional levels.

A guide for regulators was also unveiled to help operationalize the framework with clarity on legal, technical, ethical, and institutional considerations.

The outcomes of the Praia conference reaffirmed the principles enshrined in the Windhoek+30 Declaration, which recognized information as a public good, and they build on UNESCO’s Guidelines for the Governance of Digital Platforms.

According to observers, the resolutions provide a blueprint for resisting disinformation and other threats to democratic governance while ensuring that efforts to regulate digital spaces do not undermine legitimate expression.
