WRC’19 adopts new regulatory procedures for radio communication - ITREALMS
The 38th ITU World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC-19) ended in Geneva with adoption of a new innovative milestone-based regulatory approach for the deployment of non-geostationary satellite orbit (NGSO) satellites in specific bands and services for radio communication, reports ITREALMS.
The agreement, ITREALMS gathered was reached at WRC-19 thereby establishing regulatory procedures for the deployment of non-geostationary satellites, including mega-constellations in low-Earth orbit (LEO).
The agreement, ITREALMS gathered was reached at WRC-19 thereby establishing regulatory procedures for the deployment of non-geostationary satellites, including mega-constellations in low-Earth orbit (LEO).
ITREALMS reports that the milestone-based approach will provide a regulatory mechanism to help ensure that ITU’s Master International Frequency Register reasonably reflects the actual deployment of such NGSO satellite systems in certain frequency bands and services.
In defining more flexible timelines and objective criteria, this approach also seeks to strike a balance between the prevention of spectrum warehousing, the proper functioning of coordination mechanisms, and the operational requirements related to the deployment of NGSO systems.
While satellites in geostationary orbit are aligned with the earth’s rotation at an elevation of 36,000 km, NGSO satellites move across the sky during their orbit around the earth, in medium Earth-orbit 8,000 – 20,000 km above the earth and in low-Earth orbit at elevations between 400 and 2000 km.
With the availability of launch vehicles capable of supporting multiple satellite launches, mega-constellations consisting of hundreds or thousands of spacecraft are becoming a popular solution for global telecommunications, including to remote rural areas and isolated communities, providing low-latency broadband coverage (owing to their proximity to the earth’s surface), remote sensing, space and upper atmosphere research, meteorology, astronomy, technology demonstration and education.

FG adopts Nigerian Mobile Economy Summit and Expo'17
ITRealms:
The Nigerian Government through the Federal Ministry of Communications has adopted the Nigerian Mobile Economy Summit Expo (NIMES 2017) reports ITRealms.
The FG adoption is coming at the heels of the Minister of Communications, Barrister Adebayo Shittu, endorsement of the event with assurance on government’s support for the programme.
“I am pleased to adopt the Nigerian Mobile Economy Summit and Expo 2017 scheduled for December 7," he declared, assuring that government would do everything needed to support the initiatives and consequently advance the growth and development of ICT industry in Nigeria.
"I will therefore appreciate to be acquainted with the update of the preparation for guidance as time goes on," he said.
ITRealms recalls that Nigerian Mobile Economy Summit Expo will take place at the Oriental Hotel Lagos on December 7 hosted by the Transatlantic Media Company (TMC) led by Bayero Agabi, an ace ICT broadcast journalist.
According to says the event goes beyond just another economic summit. According to him, the endorsement and adoption of NIMES by the Federal Government of Nigeria, has made it a national event that everyone can be proud of.
“NIMES has become a platform for everyone. The financial sector, manufacturing sector and the creative sector will come together under the umbrella of the Federal government of Nigeria. This is to ensure that they can get the financier that they require. The government policies can be reshaped if they are not good enough. NIMES is a tripod platform for the government, the business community and the innovators to come together and dialogue on how to shape the economy. You must understand that, the digital economy is no longer a part of the economy; it is now the economy. Today, if you are not in the digital realm, you are not doing business.
This means, digital has become the economy. That is what NIMES stands for and it is the reason why the Federal Government of Nigeria is endorsing and adopting it to ensure that everyone doing business and wants to ensure his or her business is optimized in terms of profitability and knowledge that is where you have to be.” He said.
Speaking further, convener of the event, Dr. Bayero Agabi says, “NIMES is a combination of all other industries who are already using technology and to challenge those who are not applying technology. It is a platform for us to grow fast.” He concluded.

NIPOST adopts 3 word addressing system
The Nigeria’s postal services (NIPOST),
has adopted the innovative global addressing system known as what3words to improve delivery services,
reports ITRealms.
Nigeria, ITRealms reports,
is the seventh country to adopt what3words and the third in Africa.
The system, ITRealms gathered,
is already being used for mail deliveries in Mongolia, Sint Maarten, Côte
d’Ivoire, Djibouti, Tonga and Solomon Islands, hence its anticipated that Nigeria as Africa’s largest
economy and most populous country with approximately 184 million inhabitants,
has the seventh largest population in the world.
ITRealms reports that Nigeria’s
poor addressing system means that only 20 per cent of its inhabitants receive
mail at home. While 79 per cent of homes and businesses cannot receive
deliveries to the door, and the remaining 1 per cent receive their mail
using one of the 478,000 P.O. boxes throughout the country.
In addition, ITRealms also
gathered that a
postcode system is not optimised with only 5 per cent of mail gets properly
addressed with the postcode, hampering the efforts of NIPOST to improve quality
of service.
Nigeria’s Postmaster General, Barrister Bisi Adegbuyi, said they are very
pleased to be collaborating with what3words as an addressing solution with huge
potential to unlock opportunities.
“Better addressing is a key to NIPOST’s agenda, which aims to
transform, innovate, and deliver more services to more people all over the
country” Adegbuyi said.
Chris Sheldrick, CEO and
Co-founder of what3words said that with a rapidly growing ecommerce ecosystem,
Nigeria is a very exciting country to be working with.
“Postal services have a critical
role in building a strong economy and NIPOST are firmly focused on the future,
and are taking steps to modernise and grow their capacity and range of
services,” he said.
ITRealms recollects that what3words, is an innovative
global addressing system which divided the world in 57 trillion 3m x 3m
squares; each with a unique 3 word address, that are easy to remember, and to
share via email, text or over the phone.
Sheldrick emphasised that the addresses are pre-assigned, using an
algorithm and each 3 word address refers to a precise 3m x 3m square somewhere
in the world.
The what3words Application Programming Interface (API), he said, is
being integrated by business, apps and services across the world in a wide
variety of sectors.
“It is also used by individuals via the free what3words app. The
system is currently available in 14 languages, with many more in development,
and it is also optimised for voice recognition,” he said.
On the other hand, NIPOST is the designated postal operator for Nigeria with 10,093 employees, spread among 2,795 post offices throughout
the country and handles around 10 billion mail items a year.
NIPOST
is currently working to modernise and streamline its operations and has plans
to diversify profitably into financial services,
e-commerce and logistics, insurance, shipping and property, to provide quality
postal services that satisfy the aspirations of all stakeholders.

Samsung adopts metal quantum dot for QLED TV
The Samsung Electronics has adopted Quantum Dot materials in
its latest on the shelf QLED Q9, Q8, and Q7 TV series, reports ITRealms.
Business Unit Head, TV/AV at Samsung South Africa, Lance
Shaun Berger, said that with the launch came with the belief that this latest
range of TVs will create an entirely new era in home entertainment.
“With the advent of QLED TV, Samsung can provide the most
true-to-life picture on screen, having been successful in solving past
inconsistencies in the viewing experience and consumer pain points. While we
are redefining the fundamental value of TV with this range, we have also placed
a strong focus on ensuring that there will be models available that will suit
the pockets of our customers in the emerging markets,” Berger said.
According to Samsung, with picture quality remaining a top
priority for consumers around the world, especially as the average TV continues
to increase in size, Samsung’s 2017 QLED TVs represent yet another leap
forward. The new line-up offers dramatically improved colour performance.
Displaying DCI-P3 colour space accurately and in another world first for
Samsung, QLED TVs are capable of reproducing 100% colour volume. This means the
devices can express all colours at any level of brightness, with even the
subtlest differences visible at the QLED’s peak luminance – between 1,500 and
2,000 nits.
Colour volume presents colour that can be expressed at
different levels of brightness. For example, a leaf can be perceived as
different shades, from yellowish-green to turquoise, depending on the
brightness of the light. Samsung’s QLED TV displays can capture even these
subtle differences in colour pertaining to brightness.
“This breakthrough is a result of Samsung’s adoption of a
new metal Quantum Dot material, making it possible for the TV to express a
significantly improved range of colour, with much greater detail compared to
conventional TVs,” Berger explains.
ITRealms gathered that the new Quantum dots allow Samsung
QLED TV to express deep blacks and rich detail regardless of how light or dark
the scene is, or whether the content is being played in a brightly lit or
darkened room. With its metal alloy Quantum Dot technology, brightness no
longer has to be compromised to boost colour performance, which is maintained
regardless of how wide the viewing angle may be.
Berger further said, there is no reason why African
consumers should be left behind by this ground-breaking new technology, which
is why “our innovative new QLED TVs have been designed to not only offer a
vision of the future, but to do so at a price point that takes into account our
many valued customers across the African continent.”
