Charity Unachukwu’s death: UNTH promises probe, CMD cancels foreign trip - ITREALMS

The University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Enugu, has pledged a full-scale investigation into allegations of negligence linked to the death of Mrs. Charity Unachukwu, who was brought to the facility on September 20, 2025, reports ITREALMS.

In a statement signed by the hospital’s Public Relations Officer, Uchelue Boniface, UNTH extended its condolences to the Unachukwu family and acknowledged the grief expressed in the widely circulated account of the incident. 

The hospital also assured that the matter is being treated with utmost seriousness.

To underscore this commitment, the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of UNTH cancelled an official trip abroad scheduled for September 29, 2025, in order to personally supervise what the hospital described as an “independent and transparent investigation.”

According to UNTH, the probe will examine the quality of care provided, review emergency admission processes, assess laboratory and diagnostic services, and evaluate inter-departmental coordination. 

Further, the hospital said the exercise would also seek to identify systemic or individual failures that may have contributed to the tragedy.

While stressing its motto of “Service to Humanity,” UNTH noted that it was recently certified as a Level 3 teaching hospital by PharmAccess after major upgrades in services and infrastructure, and is working towards achieving Level 4 status next year.

The statement further assured that the investigation would be thorough, corrective actions would follow where lapses are confirmed, and systemic improvements would remain a priority.

“We appreciate the public’s vigilance and trust, and we reaffirm our commitment to compassionate, safe, and effective healthcare for all,” the statement concluded.
