The Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA) has successfully concluded its 17th Annual General Meeting (AGM), marking a significant stride in fortifying Nigeria's digital identity with the election of the some new members of the Executive Board of Directors, reports ITREALMS.
The elections, conducted under strict guidelines, saw the emergence of Mrs. Mary Olaseni, Mrs. Abibat Olatunji, and Mr. Ahmad Mukoshy, CEO of Gigalayer, to the EBoD, while existing board members Mr. Chukwuemeka Fred Agbata and Mr. Destiny Amana, Managing Director of IceCool Contract assumed new roles as Financial Secretary and Treasurer respectively.
In his address, NiRA President, Mr. Adesola Akinsanya, highlighted 2024 as a year of unprecedented growth and innovation, with some key achievements including the impressive registration of 94,723 new .ng domain names and 61,227 renewals, bringing the total managed .ng domains to 212,890.
Furthermore, he disclosed that some 23 new registrars were accredited within the period under review, thereby expanding NiRA’s reach and partnerships.
He also said that a significant milestone was the implementation of DNS Security Extensions (DNSSEC), which enhances the security and trustworthiness of the .ng namespace, while introduction of the Registrar Incentive Programme in Q3 2024 further boosted .ng domain adoption.
Mr. Akinsanya emphasized strategic collaborations with government and private sectors, including the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), and the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Engagements with the Nigeria Computer Society and the Innovation Support Network (ISN Hubs) were also highlighted, with plans for further development in the coming year.
Other notable achievements included the inaugural Tech Convergence 1.0, fostering tech and creative industry discussions, and the 7th .ng Awards, celebrating 19 organizations and 16 individuals for their contributions to Nigeria’s digital ecosystem. Mr. Akinsanya reaffirmed NiRA’s commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility through the NiRA Kids Foundation (NKF) and the .ng Academy, focusing on digital empowerment.
ITREALMS gathered that members participation was robust, with a strong emphasis on deeper engagement and a shared vision for strengthening NiRA’s role in Nigeria's digital landscape.
The seamless AGM execution reflected the dedication of the NiRA Secretariat as NiRA remained committed to building a secure, accessible, and resilient digital ecosystem via the .ng domain, reinforcing Nigeria's digital identity globally and advancing innovation and internet development.
