The ceremony took place on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, in the vibrant city of Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
Presented by African Banker magazine, this accolade recognizes Governor Cardoso's "bold and strategic" leadership in implementing crucial monetary and regulatory reforms that have effectively restored stability and confidence within Nigeria's financial system, according to event organizers.

In an official statement, the Awards Committee lauded the CBN under Governor Cardoso's guidance for successfully enacting key policy measures. These measures have been pivotal in stabilizing the naira, enhancing transparency in the foreign exchange market, and re-establishing policy credibility. The Committee emphasized that these impactful efforts have laid a solid foundation for long-term macroeconomic resilience and have significantly renewed investor confidence in the Nigerian economy.

Dr. Nkiru Balonwu, Adviser to the Governor on Stakeholder Engagement and Strategic Communication, graciously accepted the award on Governor Cardoso's behalf. She was accompanied on stage by prominent figures from the CBN, including Dr. Victor Oboh, Director of the Monetary Policy Department, and Dr. Olubukola Akinwumi, Director of the Banking Supervision Department. Subsequently, they were joined by Dr. Aloysius Uche Ordu, a respected member of the Bank's Monetary Policy Committee (MPC).

This award is a testament to the Committee's recognition of Governor Cardoso’s recent achievements and the Central Bank's critical role in addressing market imbalances and strategically repositioning the Nigerian economy for sustainable growth," stated the organizers.

Now in its 19th year, the African Banker Awards, proudly organized by African Banker magazine with the esteemed African Development Bank Group as its official patron, remains a premier event that draws together senior leaders from government, banking, and development finance institutions across the African continent. This annual gathering serves to celebrate and highlight excellence in African finance.
