IPV6 Council adduces need for early migration, visits Internet Solutions

Speaking during a courtesy visit to Internet Solution Nigeria, a leading Internet Service Provider in the country, Council chairman, Mr. Muhammed Rudman, noted that the visit was designed to interact with Internet Solutions Nigeria, which the Council believes could be paving the way towards the realization of IPV6 migration, which is seen globally to provide enhanced Internet service experience.
Rudman decried the low level of IPv6 ready networks, as well as usage in Nigeria, despite the fact that the country occupied first and eight positions in internet usage in Africa and the world respectively. “We are worried that some countries in Africa have started migrating to IPv6 networks, yet Nigeria that prides itself as number one in terms of Internet usage in Africa is not making a serious move,” he said.
He commended Internet Solutions for deploying IPv6 on its network and urged other service providers in the country to consider migrating to IPv6 for Nigeria to maintain its position in Africa and move higher in the global ranking.
He also said that migrating to IPV6 would create more robust and realtime end-to-end Internet connectivity and avert the possible blockade from the exhaustion of Internet Protocol version Four (IPv4) addresses.
Responding, the Head, Network Operations at Internet Solutions, Mr. George Olunwa said that Internet Solutions has since deployed and advertised IPv6 block on the Internet, but the challenge is largely apathy from the enterprise customers, who are yet to see a pressing need for the implementation of IPV6 on their networks.
While thanking the IPV6 Council Nigeria for the advocacy visit and efforts so far, Olunwa assured that Internet Solutions would continue to push the idea of implementing IPv6 to its customers, admitting that the cost of migrating from IPv4 to IPv6 is next to nothing.
“What we have seen is that most of the clients are still going for IPV4, even though the cost of getting IPv6 is minimal. But, we believe that with this sort of advocacy being carried out by the IPv6 Council Nigeria, service providers as well as enterprise networks will begin to see a need for the deployment.
He also suggested a possibility of providing virtual lab for IPv6 within country, saying that will assist towards capacity building which can help to upscale the deployment and adoption of IPV6.
IPv6 is the most recent version of IP, the communications protocol that provides an identification and location system for computers on networks and routes traffic across the internet.
An Internet Protocol (IP) address is essentially a postal address for each and every Internet-connected device. Without one, websites will not know where to send the information each time a person performs a search or try to access a website.

Mark Zuckerberg in Nigeria, visits CCHub @Yaba
The chief executive officer of Facebook, Mr. Mark Zuckerberg commenced
official visit to the commercial centre, Lagos in Nigeria on Tuesday with a
stop-over at the Co-creation Hub in Yaba, reports ITRealms.
Zuckerberg’s presence in Nigeria, ITRealms gathered is on listen, learn
and take ideas back to California on how Facebook could better support technology
development and entrepreneurship across Africa.
Zuckerberg who is on his first-ever visit to Africa, met
with some developers, partners, and explore Nollywood. He took the occasion to
visit a 'Summer of Code Camp' at the Co-Creation Hub (CcHub) in Yaba.
ITRealms recalls that
CcHub was opened in 2011 and at the time didn't even have an office. Five years
later they fill three floors and the roof of a building, even at CcHub, people
could learn how to code, developers could get help launching their first
products, and find mentors and funding.
In addition, ITRealms
reprots that Mark then visit Andela, an engineering organization that is
building the next generation of technical leaders in Africa, set up earlier
this year, by the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative which invested in Andela after
being impressed by the company's innovative model of learning and its drive to
connect the global technology ecosystem with the most talented developers in
Africa.
Andela is a business that recruits the most talented
technologists in Africa and shapes them into world-class developers through a
four-year technical leadership program. In the two years since it was founded,
Andela has accepted just over 200 engineers from a pool of more than 40,000
applicants. Andela developers spend six months mastering a technical stack and
contributing to open source projects before being placed with global technology
companies as full-time, distributed teammates, working out of Andela headquarters
in Lagos and Nairobi.
Director, Andela Lagos, Seni Sulyman said they are excited and
honored to welcome Mark Zuckerberg to Lagos, stressing his visit reinforces not
only support of Andela’s mission, but belief that indeed the next generation of
great technology leaders will come out of Lagos, Nigeria and cities across
Africa.
Andela, Sulyman said, has created a platform for passionate,
driven software developers and engineers to break into the global tech
ecosystem, but the barriers to entry are still very high, emphasizing that Mark’s
visit demonstrates to all Nigerian developers and entrepreneurs that they’ve
caught the attention of the tech world, and they are capable of succeeding on a
truly global level.
At the end of the day Zuckerberg stopped by an Express WiFi
stand in Lagos owned by Rosemary Njoku. Facebook's Express WiFi lets
entrepreneurs like Rosemary set up a hot spot to help their community access
apps and services built by local developers.

AfDB, FMW joint team visits Abia, inspects Federal Roads in Aba
A joint team of experts
were in Aba, Abia State from the headquarters of the African Development Bank
(AfDB) in Abidjan, led by Mr. Mwila Aeron Katambula, the Bank's Transport
Specialist, and a team from the Ministry of Works, for the final lap of talks
between Abia State Government and AfDB on some developmental projects of interest
to the bank in Abia State, reports ITRealms.
The state Governor, Dr
Okezie Ikpeazu, who received the team and another team from the Federal
Ministry of Works Abuja that accompanied the AfDB team on Wednesday at the
Government House Umuahia, said that Abia State can't wait to see the
commencement of reconstruction of some major roads in Aba, especially Port
Harcourt road and Ikot Ekpene road, among others.
"Road
infrastructure is very important to us in Aba. Apart from being the commercial
nerve Centre of Abia, Aba is the SME Centre of Nigeria. Aba is very important
to the economy of both Abia and Nigeria. So, the issue of road infrastructure,
waste management and storm water management are the challenges we face in
Aba.
"Abia State does
not have the resources to do good work at Port Harcourt and Ikot Ekpene roads.
With your visit today, you've renewed our hope that help will come very soon
and the roads will be fixed.
"On our part we
have tried to do what is required of us in terms of ensuring that the ground
work is done to enable AfDB come in." The Governor said.
Speaking on why they're
in Abia, Katambula said: "We are eager to participate in the development
of Abia State. Our mission today is a follow up to meeting we had before, we
want to ensure that everything is ready because we want to fast track the
projects that the bank will take up in Abia."
The AfDB and FMW teams
later met with the State's Commissioners for Works, Hon. Eziuche Ubani, and
that of Finance, Hon. Obinna Oriaku, and other top state government officials.
After several hours of
meetings, the Commissioner for Works, Hon. Ubani led the two teams to Aba, to
have on the spot assessment of the two key Federal Roads: Port Harcourt and
Ikot Ekpene Roads located in the commercial city.
The inspection tour
offered them the opportunity of first hand information of the level of decay of
the roads and the trauma and suffering of the residents and travelers in and
around these two key roads.
AfDB is currently doing
the technical analysis and studies of the roads before releasing funds for
repairs of the roads.
This accounts for why
the AfDB team had to come with the FMW team to meet face to face with Governor
Ikpeazu and his team in Abia.
During the visit to Aba,
the Commissioner for Works, Hon Ubani told the AfDB and FMW team that the state
government "is desperate to fix roads in Abia, and Aba in particular to
stimulate economic activities and drive development across the
state"
"So far we've done
a good number of roads which fall within the responsibility of the state, but
unfortunately, we can't fix federal roads without first agreeing on terms of
fixing them with the Federal Government.
"Unfortunately we
don't have the amount of money required to fix these roads, especially Port
Harcourt and Ikot Ekpene roads that is why we are delighted to have the AfDB
here together with a team from the Federal ministry of works, to see the level
of deterioration of these roads."
