The Oyo State Government has enrolled about 10,000 vulnerable children in public primary schools into the state's Health Insurance Scheme under the Oyo State Health Insurance Agency (OYSHIA).

Oyo State governor, 'Seyi Makinde, who was represented by the Deputy Governor, Barr. Abdulraheem Bayo Lawal, presented the health insurance identity cards to beneficiaries at the flag-off of the public primary pupils health insurance scheme, held at the Ibadan Civic Centre, Idi Ape, Ibadan, on Thursday.

In a country as populous and diverse as Nigeria, healthcare challenges are a familiar reality. Yet, often overlooked in the broader healthcare conversation is the crucial role of eye care. Vision impairment and blindness affect millions of Nigerians, yet primary eye care remains underdeveloped and underappreciated. This situation calls for re-evaluating the role of optometrists, whose indispensable presence in primary eye health care can be the difference between sight and blindness for many Nigerians.

Globally, it is estimated that over 2.2 billion people suffer from some form of vision impairment, and Nigeria is no exception. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), at least one billion of these cases are preventable or have yet to be addressed. In Nigeria, the burden of visual impairment is staggering, with millions affected by conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma, refractive errors etc. What makes this even more concerning is that many cases could be prevented if treated on time and if there were adequate primary eye care services.

The Lagost State Advocacy Team (SAT) of the AIDS, Tuberculosis (TB) Malaria (ATM) Networks, has paid a courtesy visit to the Vice Chairman, Isolo Local Council Development Area (LCDA) Hon. Sadiq Shakir Adeola in efforts to strengthen the health care services in the community, reports ITREALMS.

Leading the team, the State Coordinator on Tuberculosis (TB) network, Mrs Ifelunwa Aipoh said the courtesy visit has become imperative to bring to the fore the project's being implemented by ATM, which are AIDS, Tuberculosis, Malaria targeted at the total health beings of the people and State of the facilities in their domain.

A Federal High Court in Abuja, has ordered the interim forfeiture of N110.4 million traced to the bank accounts of one Mr. James Erebuoye and seven other suspects by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) for allegedly being proceeds of crime.

Spokesperson at ICPC, Mrs. Azuka Ogugua disclosed to ITREALMS that in an ex-parte motion filed by Raheem Adesina on behalf of ICPC before Justice D. Okorowa, the Commission further prayed for an order of interim forfeiture of a Toyota Lexus Jeep and a Toyota Venza car, including an iPad device.

Airtel reiterates commitment to quality primary education

Telecoms operator, Airtel Nigeria, has reiterated commitment to quality primary education across the country under its Adopt-a-School programme, reports ITRealms.

Airtel’s Adopt-a-School programme, ITRealms gathered, offers underprivileged children access to quality education in conducive environment, providing kids with all the materials for learning and study.

The Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, Airtel Nigeria, Segun Ogunsanya, gave this assurance at the recent commissioning of the newly adopted school in Kaduna, Yahaya Hamza Primary school, Zaria, Kaduna, stressing that access to quality primary education is a fundamental right for every child.

“We believe good education is a human right. It is a ticket to prosperity. It creates a level field for everyone to succeed.

“In recognition of the role education plays in the development of a community, Airtel Nigeria has decided, as part of our Corporate Social Responsibility vision, to adopt Yahaya Hamza Primary School in Zaria,” said Ogunsanya.

Yahaya Hamza primary school joins the five other Airtel adopted primary schools spread across Nigeria, namely Oremeji Primary School II, Ajegunle, Lagos; St. John’s Primary School, Oke-Agbo, Ijebu-Igbo, Ogun; Community Primary School, Amumara, Imo; Iyeru Okin Primary School, Ilara-Mokin, Kwara and Presbyterian Primary School, Ediba, Cross River State.

Before now, ITRealms gathered that Airtel has brought notable transformation to these schools by providing ultra-modern blocks of classrooms, borehole for portable water, classroom furniture and also donating items such as uniforms, bags and educational materials like books, textbooks and pens on a yearly basis.

As said by Ogunsanya, Airtel’s school adoption is a long term partnership to nurture and empower underprivileged kids. “It is a complete package. Not a one- year wonder but a continuing partnership,” he said.

Be iconoclastic, Alisiobi tasks 2015 graduating students

The proprietress of Rosyland Nursery, Primary and College, Mrs. Rose Uche Alisiobi has tasked the 2015 graduating students at all levels to be iconoclastic, reports ITRealms.

Speaking at the 2015 graduation ceremony of Rosyland group of schools at St. Jude Catholic Church compound, Mafoluku Oshodi-Lagos, Mrs. Alisiobi enjoined students to be free thinkers in order to make it in life.

She stressed that its only when they are free thinkers they can contribute to the society freely.

Mrs Alisiobi noted that the Rosyland has to set the standard for graduands by maintaining being an iconoclastic among others, by ensuring they ring bell wherever they may be

She appreciated the parents for all their supports, enjoining them not to worry about their children going to private schools if the money is not there, stressing that with a good foundation school like Rosyland, they will not have intellectual deficiency

ITRealms also reports that prizes were presented to qualifying students as promised by the school including those who excelled on academics; best graduating student of the college as well as those who performed outstandingly in physics, mathematics and further maths.

Why Anambra State insists on laptop per teacher - Omenugha

The Anambra State Commissioner for Education, Prof. Kate Omenugha has explained the insistence of the government of Gov. Willie Obiano that laptop acquisition scheme for primary school teachers must go on without distraction, ITRealms reports.

She disclosed that the bottom line for the scheme is to enable every teacher in Anambra State to own a laptop through soft loan before December 31, this year, and every student to own a palmtop by end of 2016.

Prof. Omenugha reiterated the commitment of the state government to ensure that both teachers and pupils are globally competitive for the 21^st century, stressing that the policy was introduced nationwide since 2012 by the National Council on Education.

The commissioner who made this known in Awka, the state capital, expressed shock over the controversy generated by the policy implementation under the current dispensation in the state.

According to her, the policy will give Anambra children the golden chance to competitive with their contemporaries from across the world.

With the scheme, Prof. Omenugha underscored the fact that it gives primary school teachers a chance to acquire first rate laptops complete with a synchronized tutorial package was actually a voluntary scheme and as such not mandatory on the teachers to subscribe to.

At the 58^th meeting of National Council on Education in Abuja over three years ago it was decided among many other things that all state ministries of education should comply with the instruction to “supply adequate number of computer laptops on soft loan basis to all teachers and continually organize training workshops and seminars for teachers on effective use of computer,” pointing out that her Ministry felt compelled to carve out a better path for the future of Anambra children by embracing the policy to ensure that teachers have enough computer literacy to impart the same knowledge on the children.

Prof. Omeugha explained that the policy thrust of the National Council on Education was in tandem with governor Obiano’s Blueprint for Education which prescribes a laptop for every teacher by 2015 and a palmtop for every student by 2016. 

Also she pointed out that the 9-year Basic Education Curriculum Structure of the National Council on Education encourages Primary 1 – 3 pupils to be taught basic technology and Information Technology.

Thus, she said, it has become necessary that every teacher must be computer literate.

“We have promised our children to have a globally competitive education. I always like to give myself as a good example. I was born in the village; I grew up in the village and spent 27 years of my life in the village. But from there I was able to get a scholarship to study for my PhD in the United Kingdom at the University of Gloucestershire through the Internet. I didn’t pay a kobo. Therefore, what we promise Anambra children is education that is globally competitive and one of the ways you can be globally competitive is through a good knowledge of ICT,” Prof. Omenugha explained.

She noted that the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) would soon become a computer based test and NECO had taken the same path, indicating that from 2016, every exam that is ‘Objective’ would be computer based. 

“So, how would you produce children who can compete nationally and internationally with teachers who are still analogue?” she wondered.
