The Federal Government (FG) has directed telecommunications operators in the country to bar outgoing calls on unlinked lines from April 4, 2022, reports ITREALMS.

According to the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, the President, General Muhammadu Buhari, retired, has approved the implementation of the policy with effect from Monday, 4th of April, 2022.

It also added that Globacom facilitated telephone penetration nationwide through hundred percent reduction of GSM SIM price from N20,000 to N200 and crashing of call tariff from N50 to 5kobo.

In addition, the publication also listed several products pioneered by Globacom. They included Blackberry, vehicle tracking, mobile internet, mobile banking, multimedia messaging service (MMS), in-flight roaming services, voice SMS, Magic Plus and Text2email.

Also noted was Globacom‘s Glo 1,the first wholly-owned submarine cable, a high capacity  optic fibre cable which brings direct connectivity between West Africa, the UK and the rest of the world. The 9,800 km-long cable which provides excess bandwidth to all the cities connected to it ensures the availability of bandwidth to enterprise customers in West Africa and beyond.

In continuation of Globacom’s giant strides in the nation’s telecoms industry, it recently laid foundation of Glo 2 sub marine cable, another landmark which on completion will be the first submarine cable in Nigeria to terminate outside Lagos, thus providing enough bandwidth to communities in the southern part of the country, especially the oil platforms.

Glo gets thumbdown for sacking 90 married female staff

Glo Mobile has been receiving thumbdown for allegedly sacking over 90 female married staff on the occasion of 2018 International Women Day, reports ITRealms.

Latest in giving Glo knocks and thumbdown is the Public Interest Litigation Initiative (PILI), a non-governmental organization, which said they were hugely pained by Glo sack of these female employees.

A press statement made available to ITRealms in Abuja by the Executive Director, PILI, Prof Adesoji Adesugba, the NGO totally condemned Glo action in its entirety and manifestation, insisting Glo has adversely violated the rights of women as encapsulated in the United Nations (UN) Charter against discrimination on any basis, which Nigeria is also a signatory.

Also, the group said it was annoying to note that a global brand like Globacom “which ought to have stood firmly against such illicit acts by inculcating global best practices in her modus operandi has gotten itself contaminated in an avoidable error of this proportion.”

While recalling that preliminary investigation on the subject matter has thrown up several issues, Prof. Adesugba wondered why Glo could choose to deliberately undermine the letters of Article 30 of the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) which explicitly defined what amounts to discrimination against women.

The statement reads in part: “It is disheartening to hear that these particular set of female staff who have worked very hard to take the company to the height it has attained today could be treated in a needlessly reckless manner. We at PILI find this unacceptable and have taken a legal action to challenge this glitch.

“It is going to be a legal fight to the finish until and unless very urgent and responsible steps are taken by Globacom to restate them back to their various positions with full benefits in addition to paying damages to them for distorting their career path or progress.

“Annoyingly, this unwarranted decision was taken when the International Women’s Day celebration for 2018 was around the corner. This is not only a violation of extant laws governing labour in Nigeria but also a complete deviation from global best practices where women who aspire to reach the zenith of their chosen careers are not only given a chance to excel but also supported to do so.

“The reasons adduced as accounting for their sack in the company is grossly insufficient. Globacom is tactically saying expertise and competence can be easily slaughtered. Let me remind Globacom that the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Number 5 is also aimed at comprehensively achieving gender equality and empowerment of women and girls all over the world.”

As said by him, the time has come for all men of goodwill to rally round women in order to ensure that they successfully overcome any impediments on their way to becoming fully empowered economically, politically and socially.

“We have to start the process of ensuring that, no worker in Nigeria, particularly those affected by this action are not used and dumped after contributing immensely in training, mentoring and track record of service to their employers,” Adesugba submitted.

FRSC commends Glo for supporting road safety

Globacom has added yet another laurel to its basket as the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) recognized the telecom network for silent contributions to road safety in the country over the years, reports ITRealms.

The award was formally presented to Globacom at a high profile dinner marking the climax of the activities put together to commemorate the 30th anniversary of FRSC at the Nigeria Airforce (NAF) Conference Centre and Suites in Abuja.

He urged the company and the other corporate supporters not to rest on their laurels as the task to make the roads safe is a continuous one.

Earlier in a short presentation at the conference by Kolapo Sheriff of the Marketing Department of Globacom, the company stated that successful road safety measures employed by front-running countries across the world are backed by intelligent and innovative technology.

9Mobile acquisition: Glo denies instigating report, confident in NCC, Barclays

Telecommunications giant, Globacom, has denied instigating media which positioned it as the preferred bidder and has infact went ahead to acquire the embattled 9Mobile which has been on the investors shelf, reports ITRealms.

In its reaction, Glo distanced itself from media reports which made rounds lately, insisting that it has not acquired telecommunications company, 9Mobile.

A press statement issued in Lagos on Friday said: “Globacom has not acquired 9Mobile as widely reported in the media.”

According to the company, "We are bound by the terms of the acquisition process as stipulated by the authorities handling it and we will not in any way sway or deviate from the rules".

“We repose confidence in Barclays Africa, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) which are handling the process that will lead to the emergence of a new owner for the company”.

Globacom urges all stakeholders and, indeed, the Nigerian public to disregard the report.

Recipes for SMEs growth according to Glo

Cote d'Ivoire hosts African research summit powered by Glo

Some of these locations include Lagos (Lekki, Ikoyi, Victoria Island, Ajah and Akoka), Port Harcourt (Aba Road, Trans Amadi, Diobu, Old GRA and UNIPort, Warri, Eket and Benin), Abuja (Maitama, Wuse, Asokoro, Garki/Central Business District and Airport Road), and Jos in North Central), Yola – ABTI (North East) and Zaria- ABU in North West.

A number of the Glo 4G LTE subscribers, who having experienced the speed of the service, described it as second to none in the country in terms of quality and coverage, and urged Globacom to rapidly spread the network to suburbs and villages.

One of the respondents, Titilayo Lawal, a fashion designer based in Adeniran Ogunsanya area of Surulere Lagos, praised the Glo 4G LTE service. Lawal who had ported to Glo from another network for reasons relating to poor data service said her experience so far on Glo network is remarkable and impressive. “It is good.  It is very fast no matter the amount of attachment you are sending.  I love the service.” She urged Globacom to extend the 4G LTE service to some other locations especially where she spends most of her time.

Stephen Obembe, who resides in Wuse 2, Abuja who also ported to Glo could not hide his excitement at the 4G LTE service. “It’s been great. Glo 4G has been good, very good. I use a lot of data for my business and I am really satisfied with the service. I am very happy I ported to the Glo network”, he said.

For Maniru Saminu, a Bureau De Change operator based in Zone 4, Wuse, Abuja, the Glo 4G LTE service is a new dawn in data and internet network in Nigeria. He enthused that Glo has become the network of choice for him.

“I really appreciate Glo 4G service. It is very fast. I am enjoying the internet service, I do not experience delays doing streaming and downloads. I also do my internet banking transactions with ease,” Saminu said. He explained that the clear difference he experienced spurred him to encourage his friends in the BDC business to subscribe to Glo 4G.

“I even gave my old Samsung S7 Edge phone to one of my friends to use and he has subscribed. The second person will soon subscribe. I want to urge Globacom to bring the service to Kano, my home state so we can enjoy it over there also,” he said.

Globacom in a statement encouraged Nigerians to switch to its 4G LTE network and begin to enjoy superior quality. “Glo LTE network is one of the very best you will find anywhere in the world. Apart from an expansive, nationwide state-of-the-art telecommunications infrastructure which our 4G LTE  network is predicated on, it is also riding on the much sought-after spectrum band 28. This gives it a strong edge,” Globacom explained.
