Cybersecurity Forum 2025: NCS charts course for digital sovereignty - ITREALMS

ITREALMS ... making leadership SENSE with digital news!

The Nigeria Computer Society (NCS) has asserted a powerful new mandate for the nation's digital future, emphasizing a crucial pivot from mere cybersecurity awareness to aggressive policy development, robust capacity building, and collaborative action, reports ITREALMS.
Cybersecurity Forum 2025: NCS charts course for digital sovereignty - ITREALMS

This strategic shift was the cornerstone of the welcome address delivered by Dr. Muhammad Sirajo Aliyu, President of the NCS, at the opening of the 2025 Cybersecurity Forum, held at the National Open University Head Office in Abuja.

Under the resounding theme, "Digital Sovereignty: Building an Agile and Resilient Nation," Dr. Aliyu underscored the escalating sophistication and impact of cyberattacks, from ransomware crippling essential services to threats against critical infrastructure. He passionately declared that the time for reactive measures alone is over; Nigeria must now proactively fortify its digital frontiers.

"The digital world we rely on for communication, commerce, governance, and daily life is under constant threat," Dr. Aliyu stated, painting a stark picture of the challenges. "Cyberattacks are growing in scale, sophistication, and impact. From ransomware targeting hospitals and schools, to threats against critical infrastructure and personal data breaches, the need for robust cybersecurity practices has never been greater."

The forum, a flagship initiative of the NCS, has brought together a formidable assembly of minds: experts from government, industry, academia, and the private sector. Their mission, as articulated by Dr. Aliyu, extends beyond merely understanding the current threat landscape. It's about forging "forward-looking strategies in AI security, data protection, incident response, policy, and international cooperation."

A key thrust of the NCS's renewed focus is the development of actionable policies. Dr. Aliyu stressed that the forum's outcome would not just be insightful discussions, but a comprehensive communiqué slated for delivery to all relevant government and private agencies. This communiqué will serve as a direct appeal for stakeholders to champion critical areas for national cybersecurity, including:

Building cutting-edge and relevant cybersecurity infrastructures designed specifically to protect Nigeria's digital sovereignty. This calls for a strategic investment in homegrown solutions and resilient frameworks.

Intensive training and development of a robust pipeline of cybersecurity experts capable of effectively managing and defending these critical infrastructures. Recognizing the global shortage of skilled professionals, Nigeria must cultivate its own talent pool.

Aggressive, nationwide cybersecurity advocacy campaigns, achieved through strategic partnerships with professional bodies like the Nigeria Computer Society. By leveraging the NCS's extensive structure and state chapters, the aim is to ensure comprehensive national coverage and embed a strong cybersecurity culture across all segments of society.

"It is through open dialogue and shared expertise that we will strengthen our collective defenses and ensure a safer digital future for all," Dr. Aliyu urged attendees, emphasizing the collaborative spirit essential for this national endeavor. He encouraged active engagement, critical thinking, and a shared commitment to advancing cybersecurity.

The 2025 Cybersecurity Forum marks a decisive moment for Nigeria. The NCS, under Dr. Aliyu's leadership, is not simply raising awareness; it is spearheading a movement to translate knowledge into concrete action, policy into protection, and collaboration into an unyielding digital shield for the nation's future and sovereignty. The call has been made, and the pathway to a truly agile and resilient digital Nigeria begins now.

Cybersecurity skills shortage: Recession or stress? - ITREALMS

ITREALMS ... making leadership SENSE with digital news!

The economic landscape has seen many technology companies lay off vast numbers of employees, but for cybersecurity, the picture looks very different.
In 2023, there have been so many layoffs in the technology industry that TechCrunch (https://apo-opa.info/3JozWLm) labelled it a “reckoning” in its extensive list released late April. To date, across numerous organisations that include Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Dropbox and Zoom, to name but a few, there have been nearly 169,000 layoffs. Meta is expected to lay off 10,000 roles in the next few months and Disney 7,000. And yet, in cybersecurity there are still more “jobs open than people to fill them” (https://apo-opa.info/3NGG981).
