NCDMB-NTA Science Quiz: Kaiama Grammar, FGGC Imiringi clinch top honors in Bayelsa - ITREALMS

The 9th edition of the NCDMB/NTA Science Quiz Competition for secondary schools in Bayelsa State reached a triumphant conclusion on Wednesday at the Nigerian Content Tower (NCT) Conference Centre, Swali, Yenagoa, reports ITREALMS.

In a competitive display of academic excellence, Kaiama Grammar School (Kolokuma/Opokuma LGA) and Federal Government Girls College (FGGC), Imiringi (Ogbia LGA) emerged as the top prize winners. Apex Academy, Yenagoa, secured the position of second runner-up, rounding out the podium finishes.

The board’s commitment to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) was reflected in the substantial rewards provided to the winning schools. Each of the three institutions received a suite of high-end educational tools, including: Advanced laboratory equipment and microscopes, anatomical skeleton models, electronic compact scales and standard printers.

Furthermore, in a move to foster individual digital literacy, the six student contestants were each awarded an HP laptop for personal development.

Representing the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB), Engr. Felix Omatsola Ogbe, the General Manager of Corporate Communications, Dr. Obinna Ezeobi, highlighted the competition's nine-year legacy as a cornerstone of the Board's educational advocacy.

Dr. Ezeobi emphasized that the partnership with the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) is rooted in a shared vision for capacity development. "Our mandate is to develop indigenous capacity to enhance Nigerian participation in the oil and gas industry," he stated, noting that science and technology serve as the bedrock of the sector.

He underscored the importance of long-term workforce planning, noting, "It is in our interest to develop the young ones who will work in the industry" as the current workforce approaches retirement. Beyond the quiz, he highlighted the NCDMB’s broader efforts, including the establishment of ICT centers equipped with interactive smartboards, servers, and power solutions in secondary schools nationwide.

Dr. Ezeobi concluded by challenging the students to prioritize digital skill acquisition over entertainment, encouraging them to focus on innovation that can drive performance in oil, gas, mining, agriculture, and construction.

In her goodwill message, the General Manager of NTA Yenagoa, Mrs. Mary Ekanem, praised the NCDMB for stepping in to sustain the competition when it was threatened by financial constraints.

"NCDMB is helping the NTA fulfill its mandate regarding education," she remarked, noting that the competition serves as a critical catalyst for knowledge acquisition. Mrs. Ekanem further emphasized NTA’s commitment to maintaining objective information dissemination to foster national unity and enlightenment.

The Coordinator of the Science Quiz, Mr. David Oyintare Enemiebor, lauded the NCDMB for doubling the competition’s reach, expanding participation from 16 to 32 schools—and for significantly elevating the event's profile through its generous prize structures.

"NCDMB, you have made a great impact," Enemiebor declared, as the event concluded with the official presentation of awards to the triumphant students and their institutions.
