Following a disruptive surge in cybersecurity breaches across Nigeria's financial services, public sector agencies, and fintech ecosystems, premier information security and Governance, Risk, and Compliance (GRC) advisory firm, Digital Encode Limited, has issued an urgent nationwide cybersecurity advisory, reports ITREALMS.
The intervention follows recent aggressive data exposures by malicious threat actors targeting private and public sector infrastructure.
Digital Encode’s strategic advisory highlights a deeply troubling operational pattern: the vast majority of recent cyber incidents are not the result of highly sophisticated "zero-day" exploits. Instead, they are driven entirely by preventable vulnerabilities in basic security configurations, poor credential hygiene, and weak operational controls.
According to the advisory, officially signed and issued by the Chief Visionary Officer (CVO) of Digital Encode Limited, Professor Obadare Adewale Peter, attackers are heavily exploiting misconfigured, publicly exposed digital assets.
Exposed Cloud Infrastructure: Publicly accessible cloud storage architectures allowing anonymous access to sensitive customer records and operational data.
Hardcoded Secrets: Embedding API keys, cryptographic tokens, and administrative credentials directly within public repositories, web applications, and mobile deployment artifacts.
Fringe Hosting Risks: The uncontrolled, unmonitored use of third-party cloud hosting platforms such as Vercel, Netlify, and Render by internal development teams.
Perimeter Weaknesses: Exposure of administrative endpoints, active API documentation, and staging environments in live production settings, alongside weak vendor risk management.
Dismantling the myth that Nigerian institutions are falling victim to unavoidable cyber warfare, Professor Obadare clarified that these security failures stem from a discipline deficit rather than a lack of advanced security software.
“Organizations affected in recent breaches were not compromised due to highly advanced attacks, but due to severe lapses in enforcing existing security controls," Prof. Obadare stated. "Entities must immediately ensure that no cloud resources linked to their operations; whether AWS S3, Azure Blob, Google Cloud Storage, or Firebase, allow anonymous access. It is vital to verify that no cloud credentials or API tokens are exposed in public or private repositories, container registries, or deployed applications, and all external and internal APIs must enforce strict authentication and authorization controls at all times.”
To restore operational resilience, Digital Encode has called on enterprise boards and IT steering committees to execute immediate remedial actions:
1️⃣ Asset Visibility Audits: Conducting an exhaustive, comprehensive audit of all internet-facing digital infrastructure, including shadow IT and unauthorized deployments tied to employee accounts.
2️⃣ Credential Rotation: Revoking and completely rotating all exposed or potentially compromised credentials, passwords, administrative access tokens, and API keys.
3️⃣ Log Analytics & Vendor Scrutiny: Reviewing historical network logs to assess the footprint of prior unauthorized exploitation while engaging third-party vendors to validate their security postures.
4️⃣ Hardening & Validation: Fixing identified misconfigurations, tightening token lifecycle management, and validating remediation efforts through independent testing.
