How did you coined your brand name "EL-Royalithos"?

"EL" signify God, "Lithos" is a Greek word that means "stones" while the "Royal" means Royalty;(as the Maggi Queen & King which dated to 1994 where I was crowned the best Cook of the year in Nigeria at the "Maggi National Cooking competition" organised by Nestle. Coincidentally in 2019 my late husband who was a Pharmacist won the same cooking competition and was crowned best cook of the year. So "EL-Royalithos" means God’s Royal Stones.

Tinubu promised to looking into avenues to intervene to ensure a change of the status quo and improved welfare for her Constituents and Nigerians as whole.

She commended the officers of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and the Lagos State Fire Service who were first responders, putting their lives at risk, in service of the centre of excellence.

Exclusive! Okere advocates business leaders must run inclusive enterprises - ITREALMS

The founder of the CWG Plc, Mr. Austin Okere has charged Entrepreneurs and Business Leaders on improving business climate by ensuring and running an inclusive enterprise, reports ITREALMS.

Okere in a keynote address to the Indian Professional Association (IPA) at the December 2018 monthly Forum, while dwelling on ‘Re-Imagining the Workplace for Greater Productivity’ advocated an inclusive business climate that disabuses employees suspicious of the leadership of their organisations.

He noted that over 70 per cent of the delegates had a deep distrust of their employees, stressing that staff is usually suspicious of the motives of the leadership initiating change.

“This is accentuated when the change does not seem to have the three distinctive characteristics of – Intensity, Integrity and Intelligence,” he said.

Okere said that many organizations do not clearly define their purpose or their cause, that is, why they exist and why anybody should care, to an extent that they become “a purpose and vision that employees can believe in and want to be a part of.”

According to him, it is not all about the pay but also about self-worth and pride in the job; the notion of being part of something special.

“Employees reported having more trust in their companies when the organization recognizes them for their contributions, provides opportunities for involvement and communicates effectively,” Okere said.

In some cases, he said, staffs are not loyal, ungrateful and always disgruntled, stealing or doing underhand deals, resigning without notice and consideration as well as the biggest complaint by far was that staffs are running their own businesses on the side; most times in the same business segment.

On the other hand, business leaders, he said, are forced to change from both internal and external pressures.

He cited some of the external pressures to include markets and customers, technology, competitive pressures and with leadership as internal.

Leadership, he said, is about change, management is about preservation; and therein lies the source of internal conflict.

The staff is usually suspicious of the motives of the leadership initiating change. This is accentuated when the change does not seem to have the three distinctive characteristics of – Intensity, Integrity and Intelligence.

The survey showed that change at work was linked to Employee Stress, Distrust and Intent to Quit. So, let us say the distrust between employers and employees is mutual. Why is this so, and could there a balance?

Employees reported having more trust in their companies when the organization recognizes them for their contributions, provides opportunities for involvement and communicates effectively.

Many management books, he said, talk about pride in working for great companies such as Coca-Cola, Chrysler and IBM; and more recently, Google, Tesla, and Facebook and Infosys. I recently read that it will be hard to tempt anybody working for Elon Musk even with a 50 per cent additional salary offer.

He further cited an instance in Nigeria with GT Bank, which is a good example of what could qualify as corporate apostles, maintaining that the GT Bank Staff were so proud to belong to the company, and so loyal to the brand, even when they left the bank.

“It is exactly this culture that we created at CWG Plc; the culture of touching a heart and asking for a hand,” he said.

Many employers are so disconnected from their employees that they would easily miss a major tragedy in their personal circumstances, which is not to say that we should run a nursery, but at the same time, employees are not machines, they are emotional beings.

“A little empathy can go a long way. I call it gathering coins of goodwill in your pocket. People joined our company because they believed in our why – providing technology solutions that enable growth.

“It greatly helped that we run an open and equitable system. Nothing is hidden. Nothing needs to be; if we are co-travellers on a common journey to a common destination.

“Openness engenders trust and engagement – lack of effective communication leaves room for dangerous rumours. Everybody knows when we are doing well, and also when the tide is against us.

“At one of our most challenging periods, following the global financial meltdown, we all agreed to a temporary 30 per cent cut in commissions, which will be accumulated and paid when our fortune turned (and Yes; everybody had a fixed and variable salary as part of skin in the game). Our contemporaries asked jokingly what I had given the staff at CWG that made them so loyal to the company.

“Perhaps it is this something about CWG that interested both Columbia Business School (CBS) and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to write case studies on the company for their MBA curricula. I speak about CWG Plc because this is the company I know.

“Our mantra was to treat everybody as an owner so that they see the big picture. The staffs have very high autonomy and there is a deep alignment, and therefore they displayed a deep sense of responsibility and accountability. We embrace mistakes as part of learning, albeit you cannot make the same mistake twice!”

NGMN advocates end-to-end solutions for connected 5G future - ITREALMS

The Next Generation Mobile Networks (NGMN) Alliance has published its three deliverables on 5G Extreme Requirements to further drive and guide development of all future mobile broadband technology with focus on Fifth Generation (5G), reports ITREALMS. 

These deliverables, ITREALMS gathered were entitled “Operators’ views on fundamental trade-offs”, “RAN Solutions”, and “End-to-End considerations”, respectively.

Compiled by the Alliance’s 5G Extreme Requirements task force, the papers aim to highlight what implications and trade-offs related to the delivery of new 5G services are relevant for mobile network operators.

Ilaria Thibault, task force lead and Principal Researcher at Vodafone commented: “We are very excited to reveal the findings of the outcome of the Extreme Requirements task force, which was to really strike at the heart of what needs to be assessed before the world embarks on advanced 5G services.

This work quantifies and analyses the coverage impact of delivering new extreme 5G services (Ultra-reliable and Low-latency – URLLC) for the radio access network with a theoretical analysis, system-level simulations, and field trials. End-to-end deployment guidelines for meeting extreme requirements at a service level are also provided. Among these guidelines, techniques such as path redundancy and new transport-layer protocols are discussed to improve end-to-end latency and reliability.

For latency-critical services, interworking between the Non-3GPP processing delays and 3GPP processing delays has been assessed.”

CEO of the NGMN Alliance Peter Meissner added: “Our task force has highlighted several key challenges that are crucial to the future of 5G connectivity and how the industry needs to adequately deal with these. Consequently, this year’s NGMN Conference & Exhibition will see us run a special session where operators are set to share results from their 5G tests, trials and first user experience. Our aim is to uncover the new use cases of 5G and how they will be leveraged in the next few years.”

Uwaje advocates localization of passwords by Africans - ITREALMS

The Chairman, Mobile Software Solutions Limited, and former President, Institute of Software Practitioners of Nigeria (ISPON), Chief Chris Uwaje, has advocated that Nigerians and indeed Africans should leverage local languages in creating passwords for their digital devices, reports ITREALMS.

He gave this advice at the third quarterly forum of the Nigeria Information Technology Reporters Association (NITRA) in Lagos at the weekend, with the theme: Local Content Development in Nigeria’s ICT Sector: Stimulant for National Economic Recovery.”

ITREALMS gathered there are over 520 languages spoken in Nigeria alone, while the major languages are Igbo, Urhobo, Hausa, Yoruba, Ibibio, Fulfulde, Edo, Pidgin English, Ijaw, Kanuri, and Tiv, to name a few. Out of 520, nine was reported to have gone extinct.

As said by him, Nigerians and Africans as a whole need to re-identify themselves by changing their electronic device passwords, to make it somewhat difficult for hackers, because they have to contend with various African languages, outside adding special characters and numbers.

“We need to re-identify ourselves by changing our passwords so that whoever will hack you will need to first learn your language,” he declared.

Uwaje popular known as the Oracle of the Nigerian IT Industry, also said that software is a language not only a code, stressing that capacity building for local content emancipation should come from bottom-up, starting from kindergartens, primary schools, post-primary schools and tertiaries.

He also urged the various industry regulators to catch-up with disruptive tendencies within the ICT sector, Uwaje pointed out that services, constitute two-third of ICT sector, and advised that services should not be outsourced to foreigners.

Equally, Uwaje identified collaboration as the missing link in stimulating local content for development for national economic recovery.

Therefore, he asked Nigeria to declare what the nation wants to achieve out of technology, that way its goals and mission could be streamlined towards achieving same.

ITREALMS recalled that NITRA, established since November 2013 serves as the umbrella body of all practicing ICT journalists in Nigeria, cutting across the print, broadcast and online media, with a vision to drive ICT development and ensure accurate and robust ICT reportage.

NITRA chairman, Mr. Emma Okonji in his opening speech, said that in line with this noble vision, the association decided to make it a point of duty to organize quarterly seminar, where issues of national interest will be discussed.

According to him, since the incursion of financial technology (FinTech) players into the polity, has led to digital disruption in the banking sector and Nigeria has witnessed the growth of several FinTech and technology startups.

FinTechs and startups, he said, have developed home grown technology solutions with the best of quality and are commercially viable in addressing specific and organizational challenges, but they lack support and patronage from the government agencies and organisations who still prefer foreign software and hardware solutions to the detriment of locally developed products.

NITRA, therefore, called on the federal government to as a matter of urgency, formulate new policies and ensure full implementation of such policies that will protect local content in Nigeria.

Data king: UCC advocates careful regulation to risk mitigation in Africa - ITREALMS

The Executive Director of Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), Godfrey Mutabazi, has identified careful regulation as key to risk mitigation in this era of data revolution in Africa, reports ITRealms.

Speaking recently at the 2018 Global Symposium for Regulators (GSR) in Geneva, Mutabazi, he pointed out that telecom space in the fourth industrial revolution, hence driven by data.

“To plan and execute any program now, you need a lot of data,” he said, stressing that regulators cannot afford to be heavy regulation or light regulation.

“We have to look for a compromise,” he declared.

Data, he said, shapes planning in fields including manufacturing, agriculture and education, is also behind everything from national identity cards to passport registrations to birth registration.

He posited that given the prevalence of data in society, regulators must address the issue of data protection to increase trust.

“Data protection, and the way it is expanding, is causing a lot of problems now. It’s a big issue all over the world and in Uganda in particular,” he said.

ITRealms gathered that Uganda currently has several agencies that manage data but is working to harmonize these efforts with one data communication bill that would regulate the use, collection and dissemination of data.

On the 5G era, Mutabazi said Uganda is working to deploy 3G within three to six months, and 4G by the end of next year, emphasizing that the country is already looking forward to take advantage of the benefits of 5G with regard to connectivity and employment.

“We’re going to open up the band, the spectrum, so that we bring it into a reality in Africa,” Mutabazi said.

Serianu boss, Makatiani, advocates BYOD policies for Africa

The Managing Director, Kenyan-based Serianu, Mr. William Makatiani has urged African countries to come up with policies to guide the use of Bring-Your-Own-Device (BYOD), reports ITRealms.

Speaking at a session during the ongoing Cyber Policy Capacity Building Programme for African cyber rights advocates at Panari Hotels, Nairobi, Kenya on Tuesday, Makatiani said this will help in curbing the cyber threats emanating from the use of BYOD.

According to him, in drafting this policy, BYOD users must be made to understand that their devices once connected in BYOD fashion, could be taken away for legal investigations if need arises, while the information on such a device, must be encrypted.

Dwelling on “Kenya Cyber Security Report 2016” Makatiani explained this need comes from the realization that BYOD behooves an extension of the incumbent network and should be taken seriously.

The above outlines, he said, would be in addition to specific or peculiar requirements per country across the continent as Africa braces up against the growing cyber threats, stressing that getting guidelines should top priorities for Africa.

IPv6 Council advocates speedy adoption in Nigeria, visits Danbatta

The Internet Protocol version Six (IPv6) Council Nigeria, has stressed the need for speedy adoption of the protocol in the country, reports ITRealms.

The Council Chairman, Mr. Muhammed Rudman made this call in Abuja during a courtesy visit to the Executive Vice Chairman (EVC) of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta at NCC Headquarters on Thursday the 15th of September, 2016.

According to him, the world of Internet is going out of Internet Protocol version Four (IPv4) addresses, this is a fact as Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) has allocated the remaining eight IPv4 address blocks to each of the 5 Regional Internet Registries (RIR) namely AP-NIC, RIPE-NCC, AFRI-NIC, ARIN and LACNIC since 2011.

He explained that the new Internet Protocol (IPv6) will open a pool of Internet addresses that is a billion-trillion times larger than the total pool of IPv4 address which is about 4.3 billion, pointing out that this means the number of IPv6 addresses is virtually inexhaustible for the foreseeable future.

This, he noted would address the need of the ever expanding world population, the growth of the domain name system due to the opening of the new generic Top Level Domains (gTLDs) and the emerging Internet of Things (IoT).

Rudman also said that IPv6 preserves everything good in today's Internet, and much more, such as stateless auto-configuration, seamless mobility, automated network management, end to end security and new optional service levels.

He equally said most of the developed world has already embraced IPv6, with countries competing for positions in the global ranking on IPv6 adoption, lamenting that Nigeria is lacking so far.

"Unfortunately, most of the African countries are late on this mass migration, with Nigeria particularly lagging behind even within Africa, this should not be taken lightly considering that we have the largest number of Internet users in Africa and the seventh in the world. For example, out of the 103 Autonomous System Numbers registered in Nigeria only 4 are live on IPv6, even the 4 are not propagating it properly on the net. It is noteworthy to mention that over 30 organisations have acquired IPv6 from AfriNIC but most of them are not using it," he said.

Rudman who is also the Chief Executive Officer, Internet Exchange Point of Nigeria (IXPN) disclosed that major content producers such as Google, Facebook, Microsoft have all adapted IPv6 giving the opportunity to IPv6 networks access to their contents.

He listed some of the challenges identified for the lack of IPv6 adoption in Nigeria to include lack of the required technical skills, Core, Metro and Edge equipment compatibility issues,  lack of IPv6 upstream service providers most service providers do not understand the business case for the migration among others.

Rudman, who was accompanied by the council vice chairman, Mr. Chris Uwaje, Mrs. Mary Uduma, member and chairman of the Communications and Advocacy Committee (CAC) of the council, Mr. Remmy Nweke, said that to address some of these challenges, the IPv6 Council Nigeria has perfected plans to commence free regular trainings to organisations and individuals interested in IPv6, registration for such trainings have already commenced via the council’s website.

"We hope that these training would expose the participants with right set of skills to assist their various organisations migrate to IPv6 so that Nigeria can occupy its rightful position in the global IPv6 readiness," he said.

Rudman reiterated the Council's commitment to the advancement and promotion of IPv6 best practices and lessons learned in Nigeria, with a mission to provide technical leadership and innovative thought for the successful integration of IPv6 into all facets of networking and telecommunications infrastructure, present and future.

To promote IPv6 awareness, he said the Council recently inaugurated the Communications and Advocacy Committee, made up of veteran ICT journalists as its members.

In his remarks, EVC Danbatta assured the Council of NCC’s to encourage telcos to key into IPv6 deployment in the country and through facilitation of capacity building workshops, pointing that it may be difficult to identify all the challenges hindering IPv6 adoption in Nigeria.

Danbatta was optimistic that the Commission will work with the Council on strategic plans which must involve the stakeholders, stressing that the Council constitution is timely and will grow adoption as well as usage of IPv6 in the country, in addition to putting in place the legal guidelines to ensure companies in the sector and beyond buy into the initiative.
