The Biola Ariyo Youths and Women foundation (BAYWO) with Gender Equality Fund held a capacity training for Adolescent Girls and Young Women (AGYW) on HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, Malaria, and Gender Inequality, report ITREALMS.
The training held at Sango Primary Health Centre, Agege, was to prepare participants to become a voice in their communities.
The Executive Director, BAYWO Foundation, Mrs Abiola Ajani-Ariyo in her opening remark, expressed profound gratitude to the Gender Equality Fund for supporting the activities.
The essence, she said, was to catch the adolescent cum young women early in age in order to identify issues in their communities and proffer solutions by channeling it to the right quarters by advocacy.
"We realised that young girls and women need a lot of support, empowerment in terms of decision making, as there are lots of issues on abuse, stigmatisation that we are trying to curb. We want them to be able to speak up and make the right decision, not only for themselves, they should advocate for their peers in terms of happenings in their Communities," she said.
The Lead Speaker, Mr. Evans Enwefah dwelt on “Issues on Malaria Control in your Community, Understanding Tuberculosis: Care management,” stressing the need to apply advocacy in eradicating malaria from the community, as it contributes to a number of deaths in children.
“One death out of 10 during pregnancy is due to malaria, three out of 10 deaths in children is due to malaria, 10 new cases every second recorded in Primary Health Centre (PHC) daily,” he lamented.
Enwefah emphasized the need to ensure clean environment which will eradicate mosquitoes in the community, especially by using long lasting insecticides, and treated bed-nets, among others.
He also enjoined young people to take proactive steps in advocacy issues in their communities on tuberculosis management and malaria prevention, as malaria is everywhere affecting individuals, home, community and the nation at large economically, considering huge amount used on drugs which could be used for feeding.
"Malaria is one of the serious illnesses which should not be called ‘ordinary’ by people" he maintained.
Equally speaking, the National Coordinator, Youth Network on HIV/AIDS in Nigeria, Mr. Lanre Babamole, harped on “Basic Facts About HIV/AIDS,” and enjoined participants to address the dreaded disease, treatment cum care.

He denounced the notion that HIV could be transmitted through sweat, saliva, while advising youths to practice safer sex, use protection like condoms, avoid sharing of needles, syringes and sharp objects.
Participants expressed satisfaction with the training, praising its informative and insightful nature. Some of the participants, Akintade Kehinde and Ebibi Mary, who spoke to ITREALMS, among others, vowed to spread the message to their peers and communities.
