Maj Gen Ugbo, who visited the OPHK headquarters in Maiduguri on Saturday, 27 September 2025, said the exercise was in line with the directive of the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, to ensure robust and reliable communication support for counter-insurgency operations.

The African Union Development Agency (AUDA-NEPAD) has hosted a two-day workshop on biotechnology, gene editing, gene drive and synthetic biology for the African Biosafety Communication Network, from 25-26 October 2022 in Accra, Ghana, reports ITREALMS.

“Dealing with complex domains like biotechnology and related emerging technologies is a big challenge, in particular when these technologies seem beyond the understanding of the layman. Media experts play a key role in helping fill the knowledge gap with well-balanced and fact-based information,” Mr Eric Okoree, CEO of the National Biosafety Authority of Ghana and Chair of the meeting said. He welcomed participants and thanked AUDA-NEPAD for the capacity-building initiative.

Blackmail: I'll not succumb, insists Pantami - ITREALMS

The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Ali Ibrahim (Pantami) has declared that he will not succumb to blackmails, especially via the media by those described as unpatriotic elements in the sector, reports ITREALMS.

The Minister through his spokesperson, Uwa Suleiman alleged that Pantami’s office is aware of some clandestine attempts by unpatriotic elements at sabotaging the efforts being made by the Ministry to deliver its mandate to Nigerians.

“No acts of corruption or injustice shall be condoned. We will neither be intimidated by fifth columnists or any agents of dubious intentions, nor be blackmailed into submission,” the Minister was quoted as saying.

Suleiman also said that Pantami’s leadership has impacted hugely on the lives of ordinary Nigerians who have hitherto been helpless in the face of blatant exploitation.

“Since assumption of office, the Honourable Minister has consistently rolled out policies that strive to protect the consumer and entrench discipline and professionalism in the sector, this stand has obviously ruffled some feathers whose sole aim is to discredit Dr Pantami’s mass-friendly policies,” she said.

Suleiman noted that investigations into the suspicious activities of some disgruntled elements, has exposed attempts at a malicious smear campaign, bankrolled by unscrupulous elements who are uncomfortable with the Minister’s people-oriented policies because, “they can no longer conduct business as usual.”

She alleged that “The strategy is to compromise the media, using financial inducements and they have raised a considerable amount of money for this campaign.”

Suleiman commended the resilience of some media persons who resisted the lure of evil, and “refused to be compromised and reached out to us.”

“We are proud of the level of professionalism and patriotism demonstrated by the press which resulted in the woeful failure of the despicable campaign,” she said.

Insisting that the objective of this façade, was to intimidate Pantami's office into allowing the continued exploitation of Nigerians by compromising regulators.

As said by her, the office of the Honourable Minister of Communications and Digital Economy would pursue and uphold its mandate, in line with the Three Point Agenda of President Muhammadu Buhari.

WRC’19 adopts new regulatory procedures for radio communication - ITREALMS

The 38th ITU World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC-19) ended in Geneva with adoption of a new innovative milestone-based regulatory approach for the deployment of non-geostationary satellite orbit (NGSO) satellites in specific bands and services for radio communication, reports ITREALMS.

The agreement, ITREALMS gathered was reached at WRC-19 thereby establishing regulatory procedures for the deployment of non-geostationary satellites, including mega-constellations in low-Earth orbit (LEO). 

ITREALMS reports that the milestone-based approach will provide a regulatory mechanism to help ensure that ITU’s Master International Frequency Register reasonably reflects the actual deployment of such NGSO satellite systems in certain frequency bands and services.

In defining more flexible timelines and objective criteria, this approach also seeks to strike a balance between the prevention of spectrum warehousing, the proper functioning of coordination mechanisms, and the operational requirements related to the deployment of NGSO systems.

While satellites in geostationary orbit are aligned with the earth’s rotation at an elevation of 36,000 km, NGSO satellites move across the sky during their orbit around the earth, in medium Earth-orbit 8,000 – 20,000 km above the earth and in low-Earth orbit at elevations between 400 and 2000 km.

With the availability of launch vehicles capable of supporting multiple satellite launches, mega-constellations consisting of hundreds or thousands of spacecraft are becoming a popular solution for global telecommunications, including to remote rural areas and isolated communities, providing low-latency broadband coverage (owing to their proximity to the earth’s surface), remote sensing, space and upper atmosphere research, meteorology, astronomy, technology demonstration and education.

Town Hall meeting boosts govt+citizen communication - ITREALMS

The Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, has hailed his colleague in the Ministry of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, for initiating the Town Hall Meeting Series which, he said, has revolutionized the way government communicates with its citizens.

Mr. Fashola made the remarks at the Special Town Hall meeting on infrastructure in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Thursday.

“Let me commend the Honourable Minister of Information and Culture for inaugurating these series of town hall meetings that have been held across Nigeria over the past three years and the details have already been provided in his brief. This is the fourteenth (edition).

“What is instructive first is that it has changed the way the government of Nigeria communicates with its citizens,” he said.

Mr. Fashola said unlike the way the government communicated with its citizens in the past, Alhaji Mohammed takes cabinet ministers to meet and share ideals with the people, a practice that provides a feedback mechanism.

“So how did government talk to you before? On NTA, that’s all, and then when election is coming. About three months to election, they rushed to town hall meetings. But what did Alhaji Lai Mohammed do? He said let’s go out communicating because we made promises to these people and we must brief them from time to time,” he said.

While reeling out the achievements of the government, particularly in the area of roads, Mr. Fashola said the present administration has 68 road contracts in the South West alone, and that 36 power projects are currently ongoing in the geo-political zone under the Transmission Company of Nigeria.

In his address of welcome, the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said the town hall meeting in Ibadan on infrastructure is the second in a series of special town hall meetings aimed at showcasing the achievements of the Buhari Administration.

EFCC probe Communication Minister, Adebayo Shittu – CGN urges

There seems to be more trouble for the Communications Minister, Alhaji Adebayo Shittu, as the Computer Guild of Nigeria (CGN) has invited the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, (EFCC) to immediately investigate and probe him over allegations of corruption, misappropriation of public funds and self-enrichment against him by former aide, reports ITRealms.

Shittu, ITRealms recalls was accused of owning 12 luxury homes, N93m printing press houses and 25 luxurious cars by his former media aide, Mr. Victor Oluwadamilare.

Reacting to the allegations, the President of Ibadan-based CGN, Mr. Wole Adedoyin, told ITRealms that the Minister, Adebayo Shittu should be immediately investigated over these allegations of massive frauds and corruption.

He went on to say that until his appointment as Minister, his law chamber was shut due to N100,000 debt owe the landlord.

“There is a popular rumour ferried around Uncle Joe in Mokola in Ibadan that Minister Adebayo Shittu was quitted from the apartment he was using for his legal consultancy due to debt of N100,000 owing his landlord.

“Today, this same Minister Adebayo Shittu now owns a well-furnished complete building turned to his law chamber at Kabiawu in same Mokola axis,” he said.

The group, therefore urged EFCC to also invite Minister Shittu’s former aide, Mr. Victor Oluwadamilare who in his statement described his boss as greedy and corrupt to come and say all he knows about his boss’s accumulation of sudden wealth through bribery and corruption.

2019: Computer Guild berates Communication Minister

The Computer Guild of Nigeria (CGN) has berated the Minister of Communication, Barr. Adebayo Shittu over the distribution of campaign cap during the country’s NEC meeting where they were to discuss crucial national issues, reports ITRealms.

National President of the Guild, Mr. Wole Adedoyin expressed this displeasure during the guild’s January meeting in Lagos on Tuesday, describing the Minister’s action  and performance as disgrace to the entire communication industry in Nigeria.

Mr. Adedoyin who is also the Coordinator of Information Technology Writers Association of Nigeria (ITWAN) described Shittu’s behavior as unethical and unpatriotic.

“Barrister Shittu should have his head examined. His unruly behavior during the NEC meeting shows how he handles the ministry”.

“We have said it many times that Barr. Shittu is not competent and efficient to handle the ministry," he said. 

Insisting that the Minister should be given another portfolio. Ministry of Communication is a wrong place for him to be. We are begging President Mohammadu Buhari to please put him to where he belongs before the worst occur," Adedoyin submitted.

Communication Minister's aide, three others escape death in Abuja

The Special Assistant on Media to the Minister of Communications, Mr. Victor Oluwadamilare and three others, on Monday, narrowly escaped death in a motor accident at Yangoji, Kwali Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, reports ITRealms.

Confirming this to ITRealms, Mr. Oluwadamilare said the accident occurred around Yangoji along Lokoja-Abuja highway, a village in suburb of the Federal Capital Territory, stressing that it is true he was involved with injuries but is recovering.

“The crash involved a trailer loaded with cement which was headed towards Abuja and a Toyota Hilux van which conveyed the minister's aide and three others who were returning to Abuja from Lagos on an official assignment,” he said.

"It is true but I thank God I am recuperating from the injuries I sustained. The driver was operated upon because he sustained multiple injuries. He had an internal injury but thank God it was successful. He is now recuperating at the National Hospital, Abuja, while others have been discharged from the hospital. Thank you so much for your concern," he appreciated.

The Toyota Hilux, an eye-witness noted was on motion when the trailer took-off from its park without any light indication showing that a vehicle was going in the front. 

He said that the Minster’s aide and other occupants sustained severe injuries, adding that no live was however lost in the terrible accident.

The eyewitness maintained that he was among the people who rescued the victims before the arrival of the men of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) who evacuated them from the scene of the incident to Kwali General Hospital. 

"I was at the bus stop around 7:30 pm when I heard a loud unusual bang. There was a trailer loaded with cement which took off from that area and headed towards Abuja without light to indicate a vehicle was going. 

"The Toyota Hilux was on motion when the driver realised that a vehicle had took-off from that spot and before he notice the trailer, it was closer to the trailer and that was what led to the accident," the source told ITRealms.

Communication tax to impoverish Nigerian youths – Nweke

The Executive Director, Operations at DigitalSENSE Africa Media, Mrs. Nkemdilim Nweke, has condemned the Communications Service Tax (CST) before the national assembly, saying that the bill hinged on 9 per cent tax on all electronic services would impoverish Nigerian youths, reports ITRealms.

Speaking at the Day-1 of the Nigeria DigitalSENSE Forum series on Internet Governance for Development (IG4D) ongoing at the Digital Bridge Institute, Cappa, Lagos, said she condemned in totality the motion before the National Assembly.

She also lamented that the 9 per cent tax on all electronic services will further impoverish the teeming unemployed Nigerian youths.

“Thereby, making it more difficult for people to access and share knowledge which the electronic communication is made to abridge,” she said.

Nigerians, Mrs. Nweke pointed out, are already paying for all the mismanagement of their leaders, wondering why make them pay more especially in the present economic downturn.

Further, she joined forces with other stakeholders in calling on the Federal government to make Telecoms Infrastructure a Critical National Resource as this would also mean protecting the jobs and businesses online because when telecoms infrastructures are tampered with, “our Jobs and businesses online are affected.”

IEEE names Uwaje, Africa chair on publicity for IoT World 2016

New York-based Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) has named the immediate past president of the Institute of Software Practitioners of Nigeria (ISPON), Chief Chris Uwaje as its chair on publicity and communication in Africa, for the forthcoming IEEE-Internet of Things (IoT) World Forum 2016, reports ITRealms.

Disclosing this, Mr. Uwaje in a press statement made available to ITRealms noted that the Internet of Things and Everything (IoTs/IoE) represents perhaps the last hope for Africa’s 21st Century knowledge, creativity and innovation renaissance.

This, he said, was in pursuant to resolutions at the last meeting of the IEEE-WFIoT 2016 Organising Committee held on 9th March, 2016, where “Chris Uwaje was appointed the Co-Chair for Publicity and Communications for Africa.”

Uwaje’s mandate, ITRealms gathered includes but not limited to promoting, propagating and advancing the aims and objective of the IEEE-World Forum on Internet of Things, but above all, to establish innovative programmes of ensuring the participation and contribution of the ICT Industry leadership, government policy makers, IT Professionals and stakeholders in Africa, to accelerate the diffusion, application and domestication of the promise and opportunities of IoTs.

He also said that the forum with the theme: “Internet of Things: Smart Innovation for Vibrant Ecosystem” he said, promises the assemblage of best brains and leaders in academia, innovation, corporate industry, technology business and government policy makers to discuss and map the way forward and codify future opportunities and benefits of Internet of Things and Everything (IoTs/IoE). 

He equally stressed the imperative and strategic of having Africa represented and actively contributes to the outcome of proceedings – as the continent stands to benefit immensely from the conference, pointing out that in order to achieve the quantum benefits from the emerging digital opportunity, his vision is to take charge of promoting and establishing the “Africa IoTs Pavilion” as strategic imperative for success at the WF-IoTs 2016 in the United States of America (USA).” 

He told ITRealms that the 2016 IEEE 3rd World Forum on Internet of Things (WF-IoT) – IoT: Smart Innovation for Vibrant Ecosystems is a unique event for industry leaders, academics and decision making government officials. IEEE WF-IOT 2016 will be held at the Hyatt Regency in Reston, Virginia USA between 12 and 14 December, 2016. 

Uwaje further said this event is designed to examine key critical innovations across technologies which will alter the research and application space of the future. 

“The Internet of Things envisions a highly networked future, where every object is integrated to interact with each other, allowing for communications between objects, as well as between humans and objects, which enables the control of intelligent systems in our daily lives. My appointment as Africa Chair - Publicity and Communications for the 3rd World Forum on IoTs 2016 is a great challenge,” he said.

Uwaje, therefore solicited supports to deliver on this mandate of reaching out to 500 Africa Universities and 1000 IT Industry leaders cum players for submission of 2000 papers for consideration. 

“I am sure that a well-researched paper from African knowledge network has the pedigree for final selection. This will put Nigeria and Africa in the Internet Protocol (IP) forefront of IoTs the digital World,” he submitted.

Various stakeholders in the nation’s Information and Communication (ICT) industry are warming up for the another exciting seminar of the Nigeria ICT Reporters Association (NITRA) in Lagos with focus on boosting investment in the sector, reports ITRealms.

NITRA President, Mr. Emma Okonji, told ITRealms that the third NITRA Quarterly Seminar Series would hold on Friday August 28, 2015 at Westown a Hotels, Ikeja, Lagos, with the theme “Foreign Direct Investment: An Impetus to Achieving Ubiquitous Broadband Penetration.”
He also said that the event sponsored by MTN Nigeria, Samsung Electronic West Africa and Galaxy Backbone Limited, equally got backing from industry regulators like the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), and National Information Technology Development Agency of Nigeria (NITDA), as well as industry groups comprising the Association of Telecommunication Companies of Nigeria (ATCON), Association of Licensed Telecom Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), Institute of Software Practitioners of Nigeria (ISPON), Nigeria Computer Society (NCS) among other industry players.
MTN Nigeria, he said, would be the dwelling on imperatives of Foreign Direct Investments (FDIs) for further development of the nation’s ICT sector with a particular focus on broadband. While Galaxy Backbone would give details of activities in the e-Government strategy, the Samsung team would speak of innovation in mobile phone devices, as well as capacity building and skills acquisition.
He further said that with an investment profile of over $13 billion, about N2 trillion in the country, MTN Nigeria is a market leader with over 62 million subscribers on its network, a total market share of 46 per cent as at June 2015.
Equally, he said, panel sessions would discuss regulatory and operational activities, investment potential, in addition to impediments to the ongoing move to attract further investment into the sector.

“With over $32 billion local and foreign direct investment (FDI) and $10 billion needed over the next five years to build a robust Next Generation broadband network as the next growth frontier, the forum provides a veritable platform to tackle constraints to ICT investments,” he said.

Stressing that the theme of the event could not have been more apt and timely, as the forum is coming at the wake of new administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, new chief telecoms regulator on the steering wheel, so as afford first-hand opportunity to know what the industry feel about investment.

NITRA, he said, beliefs the forum would contribute to the development of ICT industry and would create a meeting point for both private and public sector stakeholders.
