The National Economic Council (NEC) has endorsed the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure's (NASENI) solar-powered irrigation pumps for nationwide rollout ahead of the 2025 dry-season farming, reports ITREALMS.

This decision, made at NEC's 152nd meeting held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, highlights the council's confidence in NASENI's ability to deliver homegrown, energy-efficient solutions to Nigeria's food security challenges.

NASENI's solar-powered irrigation pumps are designed to replace expensive petrol-powered pumps, reducing operational costs for farmers. The pumps harness solar power to increase agricultural productivity, boost yields, and improve rural livelihoods. With advanced features like GPS tracking, mobile app dashboards, usage monitoring, and pay-as-you-go integration, the pumps are a cutting-edge solution for Nigerian farmers.

The adoption of solar-powered irrigation pumps is expected to boost food production, lower costs, and improve livelihoods. By increasing agricultural productivity and yields, the pumps will contribute to Nigeria's food security. Additionally, reducing farmers' reliance on expensive petrol-powered pumps will decrease operational costs and enhance rural livelihoods by increasing incomes and improving food availability.

The government has shown continuous support for NASENI's initiatives, with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration ensuring the agency remains at the forefront of advancing industrialization, technology transfer, and food security. NEC has also mandated the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning to work out funding modalities for NASENI to facilitate mass production and distribution of the pumps.

NASENI's Executive Vice Chairman/CEO, Mr. Khalil Suleiman Halilu, commended NEC's resolution, stating that it is a strong vote of confidence in the agency's ability to deliver energy-efficient, homegrown solutions that will boost food production, lower costs for farmers, and secure livelihoods.
