The Catholic Bishops' Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) has issued a communique at the end of their 2025 Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State, calling on Nigerians to work towards authentic national transformation, reports ITREALMS.
The CBCN expressed deep concern over the erosion of family values and the rising trend of poor parenting in the country.
They condemned practices such as prostitution, which dehumanizes individuals and undermines the fabric of families.
The bishops also highlighted the importance of upholding moral values and promoting healthy family structures.
In addition, the CBCN warned about the dangers of digital technology, citing the risks of pornography, cybercrime, and addiction.
They called for aggressive media literacy programs in the Church and schools to educate people, especially the youth, about the responsible use of digital technology.
The bishops identified corruption and bad governance as the fundamental cause of Nigeria's problems, emphasizing the need for comprehensive electoral reform.
They also called for transparent appointment of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officials to ensure free and fair elections.
The CBCN further urged the government to take stringent measures to protect the environment, particularly in the Niger Delta region, where environmental degradation has had devastating effects on local communities.
They emphasized the need for sustainable environmental practices and accountability in the management of natural resources.
On agriculture, the CBCN called on governments to create an enabling environment for farmers, providing them with the necessary support and resources to thrive.
They also advised governments to pay attention to the implications of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and ensure that their introduction does not harm farmers or the environment.
The bishops' communique serves as a call to action for Nigerians to work towards building a just and equitable society, where the dignity of every individual is respected and protected.
