The management of Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals has dismissed as unfounded allegations by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) that the company carried out mass sackings in retaliation for workers joining the association.
“Over 3,000 Nigerians continue to work actively in our Petroleum Refinery. Only a minimal number of staff were affected, while we continue to recruit fresh Nigerian talent through our graduate trainee programmes and experienced hire recruitment process,” the company stated.
Management further explained that the restructuring was necessary in response to intermittent acts of sabotage across various units of the refinery, which had grave implications for human safety and operational stability.
“This decision was taken in the best interest of the Refinery, as intermittent sabotage created serious safety concerns. We remain vigilant to internal risks in order to ensure the long-term stability of this strategic national asset. Protecting the refinery is imperative not only for Nigerians, but also for our partners across Africa and the thousands of livelihoods tied to this project,” it noted.
Reassuring employees and stakeholders, Dangote Refinery reaffirmed its adherence to internationally recognised labour principles, stressing that employees retain full freedom to join associations without interference.
It added that the current exercise is essentially an audit and re-organisation process designed to safeguard the facility’s long-term stability. The refinery pledged to continue working closely with regulators, employees, and stakeholders to uphold the highest standards of safety, transparency, and accountability.
