NCDMB rewards engineering excellence: Modibbo Adama University clinches N50m grand prize @maiden engineering olympiad - ITREALMS

The Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) has reaffirmed its vanguard position in driving domestic industrial capacity, rewarding exceptional youth innovation with hundreds of millions of Naira at the grand finale of the maiden Nigerian Engineering Olympiad, reports ITREALMS.

The high-stakes national competition, which concluded following a rigorous two-day final in Lagos, showcased groundbreaking, locally driven technological solutions designed by tertiary students to combat Nigeria's most pressing socio-economic and infrastructural challenges.

Team Mavericks from Modibbo Adama University (MAU), Yola, emerged as the overall champions of the inaugural tech showpiece. The team clinched the coveted title with their "Sarafa Community Security Alert" system—a low-cost, community-powered rapid alert innovation that digitally links households to instantly notify neighbors and emergency first responders during security breaches.

For their top-tier performance, Team Mavericks walked away with a massive N50 million cash prize. In tandem with the victory, the NCDMB announced it will fully sponsor the construction of a state-of-the-art Centre of Excellence Building dedicated to the Faculty of Engineering at the institution.

The engineering showcase featured intense competition from institutional finalists across the federation, with the runners-up securing significant financial and hardware backing:

Team Aurora from the University of Ibadan finished as the first runner-up. The team developed the "Aurora Birth Health Tech Suite," a specialized innovation engineered to drastically curb neonatal mortality resulting from birth asphyxia in low-resource medical centers. They were rewarded with a N30 million cash prize coupled with high-end engineering equipment valued at N75 million.

Team Fortizo from the University of Jos claimed the third-place spot with "FarmAnchor," a solar-powered, Artificial Intelligence-driven hardware device built to assist smallholder farmers in detecting crop pests, plant diseases, and critical soil deficiencies. The innovators secured a N20 million cash payout along with N50 million worth of engineering equipment.

Team Flameless from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, secured the fourth position. Their project, a containerized plug-and-play power solution, captures flare gas from marginal fields to generate reliable, affordable electricity ranging from 100 to 500 watts for host communities. The team took home a N10 million cash reward.

Speaking on behalf of the Executive Secretary of the NCDMB, Engr. Felix Omatsola Ogbe, the Director of Planning, Research, and Statistics, Mr. Omomehin Ajimijaye, emphasized that the initiative is a core manifestation of the Board's mandate to foster human capital, promote technology entrepreneurship, and deepen local content capacity across the wider Nigerian economy.

Ajimijaye noted that youth development is a core strategic investment for the nation’s industrial future rather than an afterthought. He further disclosed that the NCDMB is concurrently running the Technology Innovation Challenge evaluation in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, alongside the newly launched Young Researchers Programme, which has already enrolled no fewer than 500 undergraduate students nationwide to bridge the gap between academia and industrial readiness.

The critical need for the Olympiad was underscored by Engr. John Alani, General Manager of Engineering and Capital Projects at First Exploration & Petroleum Development Company Limited (First E&P)—a major funding partner alongside Renaissance Africa Energy Company. Alani referenced a disturbing 2023 industry survey revealing that only five percent of Nigerian engineering graduates are fully industry-ready upon graduation, hailing the Olympiad as a structured opportunity to reverse this trend.

Delivering his remarks, the Country Director of ENACTUS Nigeria, Mr. Michael Ajayi, whose organization served as the technical partner, revealed that the journey to the grand finale spanned over two years. The competition drew an impressive 375 applications from 984 students across 80 tertiary institutions, cutting across universities, polytechnics, and research institutes across all six geopolitical zones.

The selection process required 202 judges and professionals conducting over 852 man-hours of evaluation across six regional phases. To ensure commercial viability alongside technical brilliance, the top 30 innovations initially received N3 million development grants each (totaling N90 million) to advance their ideas into working prototypes. The final 12 teams were then put through an intensive two-week business development and management bootcamp to convert their prototypes into bankable, scalable business models.

The event, which was also lauded by the immediate past President of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Engr. Margaret Oguntala, featured other notable innovations in the top 12. These included smart Wi-Fi door locks from the University of Port Harcourt, AI-powered smart glasses for the visually impaired from the University of Benin, and a portable waste engine oil pyrolysis reactor from Imo State University, showcasing a vibrant, futuristic generation of engineering talent ready to propel Nigeria toward technological self-reliance.
