Soneye to FG: Support media with tax incentives, relief on import duties – ITREALMS

The immediate past Chief Corporate Communications Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd), Mr. Femi Soneye, has urged the Federal Government to support the Nigerian media with targeted incentives, reports ITREALMS.

Speaking after receiving the NUJ FCT Excellence in Corporate Communications Award, Soneye emphasized the need for tax reliefs and import duty waivers on essential media tools, such as newsprint, broadcast equipment, and digital infrastructure.

Soneye's advocacy highlights the challenges facing the Nigerian media, including financial, political, legal, and technological obstacles that undermine its effectiveness.


He also called for the establishment of an independent media development fund to support investigative journalism, community radio, and newsroom innovation, drawing inspiration from models in South Africa, the United States, and Canada.

The Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council Chairperson, Grace Ike, praised Soneye as a consummate professional who has distinguished himself in the communications field.

Soneye emphasised that by granting tax incentives, relief on import duties, and establishing a media development fund, the Federal Government can play a supportive role in strengthening the Nigerian media, fostering a more independent and sustainable journalism sector.

Stressing that a vibrant media sector is crucial for a democratic society, promoting transparency, accountability, and informed public discourse.
