SNEPCo lifts Kwara school with ultramodern science labs - ITREALMS

Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company Limited (SNEPCO) has lifted Eruku Secondary Commercial School in Ekiti Local Government area of Kwara State, by donating four ultramodern science laboratories, reports ITRealms.

This is the latest effort by the Shell deep offshore company to spread its social investments  across Nigeria and boost the study of science subjects among secondary school students.

“The importance of science education cannot be overemphasised particularly in this age of rapid technology advancement. Government alone cannot do it which is why SNEPCo, its government and co-venture partners have continued to intervene in this critical area of youth development just as much as we do in the health sector,” said Managing Director of SNEPCo, Bayo Ojulari, at a ceremony in the school last week to handover the multimillion naira laboratories to the school management.

Represented by SNEPCo’s General Manager, Deepwater Exploration, Adedayo Adewuyi, Ojulari charged the students to take maximum learning advantage offered by the well-equipped laboratories to develop their potential in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

Deputy Manager, Community Development, National Petroleum Investment Management Services (NAPIMS), Mrs Jolayemi Kolapo, said NAPIMS on behalf of NNPC was pleased to support SNEPCo’s focus on education across Nigeria as a proof-point of government’s commitment to people development in its partnership with oil and gas companies in the country.

Kolapo, represented the Group General Manager of NAPIMS, Roland Ewubare, said: “We believe that our investments should not just be in the bolts and nuts but also in the people. Assisting the Government to provide quality Education delivery is a crucial aspect of our investment and that is why NAPIMS is pleased to partner with SNEPCo on the delivery of this project. We therefore encourage the school to make judicious use of the laboratories for the intended purpose. It is only by so doing that the huge investment made in putting this project in place would be justified.”

The Kwara State Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Bilikisu Oniyangi, described the laboratories as world-class standard and charged parents and teachers to ‘deliberately encourage youths to have inquisitive minds that can help in carrying out research for solving modern day challenges that pose a threat to humanity.’

ITRealms gathered that the company is appreciating its critical stakeholders for their loyalty and support over the years.

King Sunny Ade thrills Lagos, Abuja

Dealers and Enterprise customers in the South West were the first to taste the goodies at the Sheraton Hotel, Ikeja.

On hand to welcome the guests were two iconic comedians, the Bishop of Osusu Ministry, Gordons (Godwin Komone) and Seyi Law (Lawrence Oluwaseyitan Aletile) supported by a one-man band, Aka Melody, who put guests in a relaxed mood for the event.

Globacom’s Chief Retail Officer, Mr. David Maji welcomed them to the event on behalf of Dr. Mike Adenuga Jr., Chairman of Globacom.

The juju music maestro, King Sunny Ade (KSA) surprised the guests by making a cameo appearance at the event.

To provide additional entertainment, MC Tagwaye alias "Mr. President", Gordons and Acapella joined forces with KSA, making the event one to remember for a long time to come.

All the guests were presented with one plasma television set each while lucky dealers who participated in the raffle draw won cash gifts ranging from one million naira, five hundred thousand naira to two hundred and fifty thousand naira cash prizes.

NESREA joins FOI Hall of Shame - ITREALMS Online

Media Rights Agenda (MRA) has inducted the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) into its “Freedom of Information (FOI) Hall of Shame” reports ITRealms.
NESREA was accused of undermining its own effectiveness by disregarding the FOI Act and possibly endangering the lives of Nigerians by its secrecy, reports ITRealms.
In a statement in Lagos, Mr. Ayode Longe, Programme Director at Media Rights Agenda (MRA), said the agency, which has among its duties, the creation of public awareness and provision of environmental education on sustainable environmental management, the promotion of private sector compliance with environmental regulations other than in the oil and gas sector, and the publication of general scientific or other data resulting from the performance of its functions, has failed Nigerians in its core functions as well as in the implementation of a critically important piece of legislation aimed at promoting transparency, accountability and public participation in the important sector that it oversees.
He said: “There is no information available anywhere about any research, monitoring and enforcement of compliance by NESREA with any environmental regulation or laws while there is very little information available on its website or elsewhere about its activities, operations and businesses.  We fail to see how this cloak of secrecy under which it operates, in breach of the express provisions of the Law, is in the interest of NESREA or helps it to advance its goals.”
Established by the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency Act of 2007, NESREA has responsibility for the protection and development of the environment, biodiversity conservation and sustainable development of Nigeria’s natural resources in general as well as environmental technology, including coordinating and liaising with relevant stakeholders within and outside Nigeria on matters of enforcement of environmental standards, regulations, rules, laws, policies and guidelines.
According to Mr. Longe, although the agency says its operational strategy is to establish a robust environmental information management system, including a database and databank, it has failed to disclose the categories of information that the FOI Act requires it to publish proactively, including information about its businesses, activities and operations.
He noted that the agency has failed to proactively publish the lists of reports, documents, studies or publications prepared by independent contractors for the agency as well as files containing applications for contracts, permits, grants, licenses or agreements, which it is obliged to do under the FOI Act.
Besides, Mr Longe said, although the agency has a long list of accredited consultants whose certificates are ostensibly up to date as at July 2018, there is no information about the names, salaries, titles, and dates of employment of employees and officers of the agency as required by section 2(d) (vi) of the FOI Act.
He accused the agency of failing to disclose reports and details of organizations or individuals that are violating environmental laws or regulations, standards, rules, policies and guidelines, thereby creating a lack of public awareness on the issue, contrary to its mandate, and possibly endangering the lives of Nigerians as a result.
Mr. Longe said since the FOI Act was passed into Law and came into force in 2011, NESREA had not submitted any annual report to the Attorney-General of the Federation on its implementation of the Act, as required by section 29 (1) of the Law.  He noted that as at February 1 of this year, NESREA ought to have submitted a total of seven such reports to the Attorney-General of the Federation.
In addition, he said that there was no indication on the agency’s website or anywhere else that it has designated an appropriate officer to whom applications for information should be sent.
Section 2(3) (f) of the FOI Act requires every public institution to proactively publish the title and address of the appropriate officer of the institution to whom an application for information under the Act should be sent, but provides that the failure of any public institution to publish any such information shall not prejudicially affect the public’s right of access to information in the custody of such public institution.
Mr. Longe accused NESREA of also violating Section 2(3) (f) of the Act, adding that even the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation, the oversight body for the implementation of the FOI Act, which maintains a database of such FOI Desk Officers of public institutions, has no record of compliance by the agency.
According to him, the institution is also in breach of section 2 (3) (d) (i) and (e) (iii) of the Act as it has consistently failed to proactively disclose any information relating to the receipt and expenditure of public or other funds as well as information containing applications for any contracts made by it or between it and other public institutions or private organizations.
Mr. Longe noted that the institution had apparently also not trained its officials on the public’s right of access to information or records held by it and for the effective implementation of the FOI Act, as required by Section 13 of the Act.
He said: “Media Rights Agenda calls on the Buhari Administration not to condone this sort of potentially pernicious disregard of our laws by public institutions. Heads of public institutions such as NESREA who do not appear to have an appreciation of the importance or seriousness of the offices they hold have no business holding public office.”
According to Mr. Longe, “The Government must move away from what appears to be a public policy of condoning the violation of our laws by the same public institutions that should be in the forefront of championing compliance with the Law, especially when they have regulatory functions and require other public and private bodies to obey the Law and report to them. If the regulatory bodies are themselves in breach of the Law, they rob themselves of the moral or legal authority to insist on compliance by other entities over which they superintend.”
Launched by MRA in July 2017, the “FOI Hall of Shame” highlights public officials and institutions that are undermining the effectiveness of the FOI Act through their actions, inactions, utterances, and decisions.

Study: Social media creating new class of African celebrities – ITREALMS Online

The role of social media cannot be over emphasized as it has been defined as a medium creating new set of class of media celebrities, reports ITRealms.

Social media has been defined as websites and applications that enable users to create and share content or to participate in social networking.

The current study released at the weekend by the African Media Initiative (AMI) noted that social media is responsible for redefining the role and scope of media in society nowadays.

ITRealms, gathered that the study had described new media rangers especially bloggers as a new class of media celebrities on the continent.

“Social media is also responsible for redefining the role and scope of media in society. Bloggers have become a new class of media celebrities,” part of the study read.

Additionally, the study suggested that there is very little cross-border reporting by African media, resulting in limited knowledge of the continent by Africans, reports ITRealms.

The “Reporting Africa” study made available to ITRealms, points out that most of the news about Africa comes from sources external to the continent and that these ultimately determine what has been referred to as “the Africa narrative.”

AMI Chief Executive Officer Roukaya Kasenally in a pre-launch statement made available to ITRealms, said they had wanted to figure out how Africa is covered by media on the continent and the factors that determine such coverage.

She pointed out that they were concerned, “with questions about how media in Africa contribute to the creation of a common understanding of the continent’s realities beyond narratives based on preconceived ideas and stereotypes.”

The report, she said, underscored the fact that global media organizations constitute a powerful vehicle for not only shaping the global agenda, but also for framing the lens through which Africa is perceived by Africans and the world.

Therefore, social media in Africa has become an imperative part of the media that cannot be ignored, the study emphasized.

Also, ITRealms gathered that the research sought to figure out what currently prevails and if there are any compelling dialogues that are reported and can collectively define the Africa story. It was informed by empirical data gleaned from published reports from across the region and responses provided by editors to a range of questions from AMI.

ExxonMobil adduces reasons for sacking spy police officers - ITREALMS Online

The Management of ExxonMobil has adduced reasons why spy police officers on the company’s employ were terminated shortly after being absorbed in compliance with the recent Supreme Court order, reports ITRealms.

On Friday, July 13 this year, ITRealms recalled, the spy policemen working for the company in its operational locations in Lagos, Eket in Akwa Ibom States among other places, simultaneously staged protests over alleged denial of their “official” entitlements.

The Chairman, Security Workforce ExxonMobil, Okon Johnson, said the protesters, some of whom put in almost 22 years service, accused the management of refusing to comply with the Supreme Court order to absorb them as employees of the company.

ExxonMobil in its reaction through the company spokesman, Mr. Ogechukwu Udeagha, denied the accusations, saying the management had fully complied with the Supreme Court order by providing compensation packages for the affected personnel.

Udeagha also said in a statement made available to ITRealms that the compensation packages covered all categories of affected personnel, including those in active service, and others who had already left the services of the company before the judgment.

In addition, he said the company also offered human resource consulting services to assist the affected police officers with employment opportunities with third parties working for the company.

But a senior official of the company who requested his name not to be revealed, though the management absorbed the policemen in compliance with the Supreme Court order, their appointments had to be terminated for “operational reasons”.

The source said: “The company complied with the Supreme Court ruling by acknowledging the spy police as employees.

“But given the business model MPN is running, calculating their emoluments and benefits was a challenge.
“Most of them have School Certificate as their highest qualification.

“Now, the least of them will get a minimum of 10 years annual basic salary and allowances up till July 13, 2018, in addition to August salary paid in lieu of one month notice of disengagement from service.

“They were hired or recruited and trained by the Nigeria Police and deployed to Mobil Producing Nigeria.
“The company has been paying them through the police.

“Administratively, they were being managed by the police, including their promotions and other benefits.
“Most of the police officers, who joined the service in the 1990s, have put in a minimum of 12 years of service.
“The case went all the way to the Supreme Court and was decided in their favour.”

The official said the policemen took ExxonMobil to court demanding to be absorbed as full staff to be entitled to full benefits like every other MPN employees.

However, the official said due to the peculiar nature of the oil and gas industry, ExxonMobil was compelled to terminate their appointments, despite agreeing to pay all their benefits, gratuity, leave allowance arrears and pension going back to when they began to work for the company.

“ExxonMobil is an oil and gas producing company, and not a security services provider. In all, they were about 900. Of this number, a lot of them have either retired, moved on to other jobs, or died. Those who are still active are about 500, more than all the engineers.

“As an operator of a joint venture with the federal government, management thought it would be difficult to defend their status as employees on the payroll of the company,” our source said.

Company official, hinted ITRealms that as at the time they were issued letters of employment as directed by the Supreme Court, they were informed the company would not be able to carry them in the company’s books as employees going forward.

Rather, our source said, they were told those who are strong enough to continue working would be absorbed through a third party security provider to the company for them to continue working for MPN.

Free data: Fraudsters trick Nigerian telecom consumers - ITREALMS Online

If you are among those who jubilate on getting alleged free gift cards for data, then you may be in for a supposed ‘greek gift’ as it has been discovered that fraudsters now use fake gift cards to lure telecom consumers in Nigeria into handing over personal data, reports ITRealms.

Remember Kaspersky Lab experts, they have discovered the distribution of an unusual fraudulent scheme that tricks users into parting with their time and their data, for no return. By creating fake websites for the free generation of gift cards, cybercriminals are able to “sell” users’ data to third party partner sites, to which they redirect victims.

While industry and law enforcement agencies from around the world are busy fighting against cybercrime, criminals themselves are constantly looking for new ways of earning money – other than just malware. Offering something valuable free of charge is always an enticing piece of marketing, and criminals can take advantage of this. Websites that offer customers the option of freely generating gift cards for well-known companies - like iTunes, Google Play, Amazon, or Steam - are nothing new. For example, legitimate apps like Tokenfire and Swagbucks buy card codes from vendors, to then give them to clients as a reward for certain activities. Criminals have apparently recognised the popularity of such websites and have decided to deceive users using a simple algorithm.

When on the fake site, the user is asked to select the gift card he/she wants in order to receive the code. After that, the fraudulent mechanism is set in motion. To get the generated code, however, the user needs to prove that he/she is not a robot. To do this, the user has to follow the suggested link and complete various tasks, the number and type of which are determined by the partner network to which the user is redirected. For example, he/she may be asked to fill in a form, leave a phone number or email address, subscribe to a paid SMS-message, install adware, and so on.

The result is predictable: either victims get tired of doing endless tasks, or they finally get the useless code. The earnings for criminals range from a few cents per every click on a desired link, to several dozen dollars for filling in a form or subscribing to paid services. Thus, the criminals make a profit virtually for nothing, getting paid from the user’s actions on the websites of third-party partners, who, for their part, also benefit by getting access to personal data which can be used for private purposes.

“The success of these new fraud schemes is based on criminals exploiting the drive of users to get something for free. However, at best they will spend hours of personal time doing worthless tasks, and at worst - lose money without receiving anything in return. So, if you want to get your hands on a free gift card, try to earn it on legal and trustworthy sites,”said Lyubov Nikolenko, web content analyst, Kaspersky Lab.

To avoid falling for cybercriminals’ fraudulent schemes and losing personal data, Kaspersky Lab researchers suggest that users follow a few simple rules:

•Remember that there is no such thing as a free lunch and always treat offers that seem too tempting to be true with skepticism.

•Check the HTTPS connection and domain name when you open a webpage. This is especially important when you are using websites which contain sensitive data – such as sites for online banking, online shops, email, social media sites etc.

•Never share your sensitive data, such as logins and passwords, bank card data etc., with a third party. Official companies will never ask for data like this via email.

•Do not spread questionable links among your friends.

•Check with the company if it really is giving out gift codes, and whether the site is its official partner. To do this, contact the official support service by reaching out on the official website of the company.

• Use a reliable security solution with behavior-based anti-phishing technologies to detect and block spam and phishing attacks, such as Kaspersky Total Security, which blocks fake gift card sites.

BREAKING: Cybersquatting war rages in Nigeria: As ‘FlyNigeriaAir’ is taken - ITREALMS Online

Still on the heels of proclamation of the Nigeria Air by the Federal Government, last week, the ‘FlyNigeriaAir’ has also been taken by cyber-squatters, ITRealms can authoritatively reveal.

Cybersquatting, ITRealms  gathered, is the practice of registering names, especially well-known company or brand names, as Internet domains, in the hope of reselling them at a profit.

ITRealms recalls that barely a few hours after the unveiling of the Nigeria Air in faraway London on July 18, one Olumayowa Elegbede, who reportedly bought the domain names associated with NigeriaAir.com and NigeriaAir.ng as well as putted same up for sale at $66,489 (₦24 million each).

Also, the ‘FlyNigeriaAir’ as at press time, has since July 19, 2018, been registered by one Omo Naija Daada who claims to be working for an organization identified as ‘Fly Naija’ with unknown address of ‘Earth Planet’ but located in Yaba suburb of Lagos State with a phony phone no: ++234.111111111111, which has 12 figures instead of 11 for mobile phones operational in Nigeria under the telecom prefix code +234.

In addition, ITRealms investigations showed that the registrant has also registered “Email: flaynaija@gmail.com,” invariably could not get flynaija@gmail.com.

Further investigations by ITRealms, showed that the domain, ‘flynigeriaair.ng’ was registered by WhoGoHost, a NIRA accredited registrar on 19th July, 2018 for one year and is being housed under the WhoGoHost.com servers, having been created on 2018-07-19 09:28:59.49Z.

NIRA is the Nigeria Internet Registration Association, the managers of the Nigeria’s country code Top Level Domain (ccTLD) names on behalf of the Federal Government of Nigeria and internet stakeholders in the country.

An indication of clear cybersquatting is that between the registrant contact, administrative contact to technical contact and billing contact are all of the same as with Omo Naija Daada, while the registrar, WhoGoHost, office is located at No 3, Celestial Church Street, Off Amara Olu Street, Agidingbi, Lagos.

However, two-days later, at the hours of 18:10:27.653Z on July 20, 2018, the ‘flynigeriaair.com.ng’ was also created and registered by one Mr. Peter Nwagbogu of PANTA REI INTERNATIONAL located at 60, Adebola Street, Surulere, Lagos, while supporting registrar is still WhoGoHost.

Nwagbogu went further to state on the website Welcome to Nigeria Air (https://flynigeriaair.com/) is up for sale, with an online form which must include name, email, phone and message, just as its Twitter handle debuts.

On the other hand, the domain name: flynigeriaair.com, has also gone on 18 July, 2018 via its creation at 12:27:04Z by Philip Obin of Potech Integrated Services Limited, located at 20 Adeniran Ogunsanya Streeet, Surulere, Lagos via the registrar, Name.com Incorporated with status as ‘client transfer prohibited and has its server name at ns1.potechintegrated.com, while admin could be reached with admin@potechng.com.

Some cyber security experts in Nigeria who briefly commented on the on-going cybersquatting war in the country over NigeriaAir blamed those who packaged the deal for neglecting the domain name industry in their due diligence, while positing that those cybersquatting on the NigeriaAir are doing some in bad faith, which may take away their smile too soon.

Police dismiss four SARS operatives, charge them to court - ITREALMS Online

The Assistant Inspector General (AIG) in-charge of zone 2 command, AIG Adamu Ibrahim has upheld the recommendation of police disciplinary body that recommended dismissal of four policemen attached to Special Anti-Robbery Squad Ikeja, Lagos (SARS), reports ITRealms.

Police Public Relations Officer of zone 2 command, CSP Dolapo Badmos, confirmed this to ITRealms, saying that the four policemen were dismissed and subsequently charged to court on offences of armed robbery, kidnapping, unlawful detention, intimidation and threatening violence being the report of the investigation carried out against them when one Mr Chukwudi Godwin Odionye popularly referred to as 'Bishop' submitted a petition against the four on 2nd day of May 2018.

The petitioner, Badmos said, in his petition stated that on the 4th of June 2017, he was in his house around Alagbado Lagos, when the four armed men stormed his house to effect his arrest on the allegation of performing 'FAKE' miracles.

Odionye was also quoted in his petition as saying that after his arrest, he was taken to one hotel at Agege where he was detained and threatened to be killed if he fails to cooperate. He explained further that on the following day 5th June 2017, he was taken to bank where he was made to transfer seven million Naira to one of the operative's account.

On the receipt of the petition, the AIG ordered investigation into the case, which revealed that no proper police procedure for investigation was followed in Mr. Odionye's arrest and that the four SARS operatives actually abducted the man from his house and unlawfully detained him in the hotel under the guard of the suspects for personal gain.

The dismissed police men include former Sergant (Sgt) Adeoye Adekunle, Sgt AdeniraAdebowale, Sgt Agbi Lucky and Sgt Odighe Hehosa.

According to CSP Badmos,  the dismissed were subsequently found guilty during the orderly room trial for professional misconduct,  corrupt practices and discreditable conduct were dismissed and consequently charged to court on criminal charges of armed robbery, kidnapping, unlawful detention, stealing, intimidation and threatening violence.

While parading the suspects, CSP Badmos , reiterated the AIG'S directive that the force will not tolerate any act of misconduct that undermines the value of international best practices of policing as she stated further that any police officer or men found guilty will not be spared.
