Among the sub-themes of the conference which industry experts will do justice to include, A perspective on the evolution of the hydrocarbon Industry and its role in the industrialised global economy; The recent emergence e of the new green technology and its potential impact on the future of the energy trade; The direct cost of the new green technology industry on economies like Nigeria that are almost wholly reliant on the hydrocarbon Industry; Managing the immediate to short term effects of the new green Technology on the economies of countries like Nigeria whose economic prospects are tied to the fate of the hydrocarbon Industry; The roles of government and regulators in managing the transition from a hydrocarbon based economy to a new green technology environment; Deciding on a new template and business module in a green technology economy.

According to Mr Soji Adeleye , Chief Executive Officer, Alfe City Company, “one of the most important decisions being discussed right now at both the policy level and corporate headquarters across the Globe is what to make of the inevitability of the new green technology and potential demise of the energy trade as we know it.

“In the case of economies like Nigeria that hitherto had relied almost exclusively on hydrocarbon industry for their economic survival, the issue is existential.

“This conference will bring this existential discussion into focus for three days. Distinguished experts in the sector and renowned economists are scheduled to bring their considerable wealth of Industry experience to bear on the subject with a view to channelling a way forward.”

He listed other objectives of the conference to include, exploring the role hydrocarbon energy has played in the global economy industrialization; exploring the politics of oil and the emergence of the new green technology; channelling a part for a possible coexistence of hydrocarbon business and the new green technology; for bringing industry operators, regulators, government, and other industries together for a look at the future of the hydrocarbon Economy.

“The global collapse of the crude oil market in the recent time demands a rigorous analysis particularly in a place like Nigeria that derives almost all of her foreign exchange earnings exclusively from hydrocarbon, the Alfe City boss said.

“This specialist conference would attempt to put into focus the role hydrocarbon energy has played and continue to play in the world economy. It would also consider the critical circumstances of countries like Nigeria that did not leverage the considerable wealth accumulated from oil to diversify their economy.

“The technical content will be handled by seasoned international experts in the industry who are expected to proffer plausible solutions for industry operators, government and regulators on how best to confront the inevitable transition to the new green technology.”

AFRICMIL to unveil CORA, whistle-blower support initiative

The African Centre for Media and Information Literacy (AFRICMIL), would today, Thursday, October 12, 2017, formally unveil its whistle-blower support project tagged Corruption Anonymous (CORA), reports ITRealms.

Chido Onumah, coordinator of AFRICMIL, told ITRealms that Corruption Anonymous is billed as a civil society and people-centred intervention to mobilize citizens as the critical success factor in the war against corruption in Nigeria through whistle-blowing.

CORA became necessary, Onumah said, because of the realisation that the anti-corruption war is not a fight government can win on its own without the input of Nigerians from all walks of life.

Late last year, as part of efforts to tackle corruption in the country, the federal government announced a whistle-blower policy which specifies 2.5% to 5% of total recovery as reward for citizens whose tips lead to recovery of looted public funds.
“Corruption Anonymous seeks to create awareness and build public confidence and support for the whistle-blower initiative, advocate for proper implementation of the policy and institutionalization of the guidelines as well as reinforce protection for whistle-blowers,” Onumah stated.

Apart from serving as a platform for citizens to engage in whistleblowing, CORA would provide the tools for the media to enhance its investigative work.

The public launch, Onumah said, is being organized with the active participation of relevant stakeholders to give momentum to whistleblowing, which is already yielding positive results as a strategic tool in the efforts to reduce corruption in the country.

The Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu is expected as the special guest of honour while the keynote address will be delivered by lawyer and human rights activist, Professor Chidi Odinkalu.

Sportsbook MasterClass to map key principles for Gaming Africa

The Course Director, Totally Gaming Academy Sportsbook Management course, Lee Richardson, has said that they are set to map key principles for Gaming Africa, reports ITRealms.

Lee, who is also is the Chief Executive and Founder of Gaming Economics, outlined the importance of training slated for October 24 and 25, and how some jurisdictions are placing greater importance on a well-trained gaming workforce.

As said by him, each MasterClass deliver is tailored to suit audience which is exactly as what was packaged for the Latin American delegates who attended Juegos Miami earlier this year -- and this will be no different.

Whilst many of the principles of managing a sportsbook are similar throughout the world, aspects such as betting patterns, consumer behaviour, marketing regulations and licensing regimes are always different. The MasterClass reflects that, whilst ensuring the core sportsbook management principles are covered.

Essentially, he said, delegates will leave the MasterClass with a solid appreciation of five key elements of operating a successful sportsbook; perspective, profit, product, planning and people. It will give all delegates a reliable framework to adapt and adopt for their own operation, whether theirs is already established, developing or in start-up mode.

“I think it varies enormously around the world, with clear evidence that no ‘one size fits all’. This might mean very ‘light-touch’ from one regulator, through to others who want qualified individuals to hold Personal Operating Licenses, with all the due-diligence that should go alongside that ‘standard’ he said.

The scope of industry training able to deliver through specialist courses and associated MasterClasses, clearly helps with that degree of due-diligence, and should help raise standards.

Anambra confirms apprehension over Army free medical outreach

The Anambra State government has confirmed the apprehension over the Army free medical outreach in Ozubulu, Ekwusigo Local Government Area of the state, and requested immediate support of any army medical outreach within its domain, reports ITRealms.

The Secretary to the Anambra State Government, Prof Solo Chukwulobelu, decried the apprehension but acknowledged that their attention has been drawn to an ongoing medical outreach being undertaken by the Nigerian Army in Ozubulu, Ekwusigo Local Government Area, as  part of Army social responsibility to members of the public.

“However, strong apprehension among the populace has followed the exercise leading to withdrawal of students from schools by parents, misconception of the actual motive behind the exercise by stakeholders, community leaders and a general reservation by the public for whom the outreach is intended,” he lamented.

To ensure no further escalation of the situation, he quoted the Governor, Chief Willie Obiano, as having contacted the Army authorities with advice for immediate stoppage of the medical outreach until wide sensitization is conducted to reassure people of its intentions and benefits.

“The exercise has therefore been put on hold,” he assured, advising parents and guardians to stop withdrawing wards from schools as the situation has been handled.

“All schools within the State will remain open as there is no cause for alarm! Community leaders, Presidents General and all Stakeholders are hereby reassured of the commitment of the Governor and the State Government to the wellbeing of Ndi Anambra,” he said.

The State Government, he also said, strongly condemns observed rhetorics on social media completely misrepresenting the situation with insinuations of spread of diseases and death of students in schools arising from the exercise.

“The State categorically refutes these rhetorics and confirms that there is no death of any student anywhere in the State. Mischief makers are warned to desist from spreading falsehood. Anambra remains calm and peaceful” he declared.

Fear of Monkey Pox injection envelopes Anambra: Pupils reject Army free medical outreach

Some school pupils in Anambra State on Wednesday rejected the Nigerian Army free medical outreach forcing the schools to close earlier, reports ITRealms.

These pupils, ITRealms gathered include students from both primary and school schools were seen basically running home to dodge being injected the alleged ‘MonkeyPox’ virus.

Correspondent reports that  all schools shut Wednesday afternoon as the Nigerian Army Medical team were alleged to being forcing students to take undisclosed injection, hence, students were asked to go home before now.

“Students were now asked to go home immediately,” an eye witnessed to ITRealms at Nnewi in Anambra State.

Our source also noted that all the primary and secondary schools in Oraukwu, Abatete, Adazi Ani, Neni and other neighbouring towns closed all the schools and children were seen running home to save their lives.

In Onitsha, the case was reportedly not different as a trader told correspondent to go approach his children school and take them home.

Our source had declared to ITRealms “Whether or not its fake If you have any kids in any school in Awada, better go and carry them to avoid any story... Later we go hear the real gist.”

Meanwhile ITRealms  gathered that there has been some WhatsApp messages being shared alleged that the Army Free Medical Service to old people at a field in Ozubulu, Ekwusigo Local Government Area of Anambra State was a ploy by alleged Boko Haram soldiers to infect the South East.

Also the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) Imo State chapter, has warned the general public to be mindful of any unauthorized ‘immunization’ saying there is no official approval for any form of immunization to prevent any killer disease in children that is ongoing in the state.

A press statement purportedly endorsed by the Secretary, NMA Imo State Chapter, Dr. Dike Victor and made available to ITRealms, said that as a result, parents and teachers are advised not to submit their wards to persons or group of persons for any purported form of immunization.

This, he said, was on the backdrop of alarm being raised about "forced immunization"  in some places in the state on Wednesday 11th October, 2017.

However, the Nigerian Army has denied any allegation of plan to spread or inject any virus as part of the free medical outreach.

Digital platforms, economy of future across Africa

Many companies, whether they realize it or not, have already taken steps to embed themselves into the digital ecosystems that will drive their growth in future. However, the pace of adopting new digital platforms for doing business needs to increase – especially in Africa. These platforms are business models that create value by facilitating exchanges between two or more interdependent groups, usually consumers and producers.

According to the Wall Street Journal platform companies are major drivers of innovation as the top companies set the standards for the digital transformation taking place around the world. Traditional companies are challenged to keep up or risk being left behind. As platforms become the new normal for how business is done, African companies must seize this opportunity to begin to build a new digital value chain.

Already, more than a quarter (27%) of the executives Accenture recently surveyed report that digital ecosystems are transforming the way their organizations deliver value. And we found that 81% of executives say platform-based business models will be core to their growth strategy within three years.

The mandate for leaders is to capitalize on new relationships, building a network of digital partners that will not only enhance their existing business, but also allow them to forge their way into newly emerging digital ecosystems.

What we are seeing is that entire ecosystems of customers are aggregating around several new digital platforms, and businesses are more motivated than ever before to take advantage of these entry points.

Communication platforms like WeChat and WhatsApp, and Artificial Intelligence intermediaries like the Google Assistant, Alexa, and Siri represent distinct ecosystems delivering unprecedented access to customers – and businesses are flocking to them. A couple of examples include Hyatt Hotels, which uses Facebook Messenger to let guests do everything from booking and checking existing reservations to ordering room service during a stay, while Capital One bank developed a ‘skill’ for Amazon Echo’s Alexa, allowing people to check their accounts and pay credit card bills via the Echo device.

It is little surprise that the trend two of our Tech Vision 2017 study highlights that in the State of the Cloud survey 95% of respondents reported using public, private, or hybrid cloud technology, while the CIO Strategic Partner Index run by the IDC reports that 29% of IT leaders are spending more than half their IT budget on external providers. Each platform commitment means easier future engagement with other companies on the platform using the same infrastructure.

However, of the 176 platform companies included in a recent report, The Rise of the Platform Enterprise: A Global Survey led by Peter Evans and Annabelle Gawer and sponsored by the Center for Global Enterprise, Asia has the largest number with 82, 64 of which are in China. North America has 64, with 63 in the US. Europe is a major consumer of platform services, but it’s home to relatively few platform companies –27 spread across 10 countries, 9 of which are in the UK. It is concerning Africa and Latin America have a number of small platform companies, only 3 of which have met the $1 billion valuation threshold for inclusion in the survey.

More African companies need to decide which ecosystems to join and which roles to play as the technology changes are only the beginning.

How do African companies begin to close the gaps? An important way to get moving on this journey is to conduct an audit identifying how many internal and external platforms you are using and the goals for their use. Identify and address unnecessary overlaps. Determine the platforms your organization most relies on, as well as those that most depend on you. These are the ecosystems where your organization should hold its strategic and market strengths.

Over the next 100 days, look to essentially develop a comprehensive strategy to establish the foundation for your platform business model and ecosystem. During this phase you should appoint a C-suite sponsor to oversee a team that is responsible for championing your new ecosystem and digital partnership strategies.

Then ever the next year, leadership should have achieved comprehensive understanding of the new rules of business, developed a platform business model strategy, and started to test it with the launch of a small pilot program.
Companies should keep expanding the conversation: for instance, in the first 100 days have a strategy summit with your closest partners to understand their goals for the future. Uncover shared goals and commit to developing a strategic plan for achieving them together.

Consider your organization’s future through the lens of the biggest disruptions shaping your market, from inside and outside your industry. Craft the ideal role of your company in this future, and develop a shortlist of partners who can help make it a reality. And remember to develop metrics to quantify the results of ecosystem participation.

Many global brands are already taking the bold steps needed. The digital ecosystem is, for instance, totally redefining what automakers do. Rather than just building cars, they’re engaging with customers throughout the vehicle lifecycle, directly managing software upgrades, diagnostics, and safety. In the insurance industry, pulling down driving data from connected car platforms has enabled new services such as pay-per-mile insurance with newcomers like Google and Metromile to challenge the industry status quo. The opportunities are endless, no matter what industry you are in.

General Motors kicked off 2016 with a $500 million investment into ride-share platform Lyft. The move gave GM the inroads to launch their Express Drive service, an exclusive offering for successful, but car-less, Lyft driver applicants to rent a car directly from GM and get to work right away. The program was remarkably successful in the short term, opening a new line of business for GM: by July, 30% of new Lyft drivers were requesting an Express Drive vehicle in their sign-up.

In addition to partnering with Lyft, GM also made a $1 billion-plus acquisition of the autonomous vehicle software company Cruise Automation, and another billion-dollar investment in building an autonomous vehicle testing facility in Detroit.

This shows how platforms are rapidly becoming the central hubs for the rich and complex digital ecosystems that companies want to access. Consider the fact that 70% of ’unicorn’ startups (over $1 billion!) are platform companies. Other companies such as personal car-rental app Turo and group dining experience Feastly have introduced their own offerings, as have dozens of start-ups, each with their own angle and offering.

LiquidSpace, which lists offerings in more than 500 cities across the US, Australia and Canada, offers a platform for renting workspaces and meeting rooms by the day or hour.

In South Africa, a good example of a company embracing the platform economy and reaping rewards is Discovery Vitality, while Discovery’s proposed bank is another example of the evolution of this concept into other exciting sectors. The retail market for consumer goods in SA received a shot in the arm in 2015 when Kalahari was merged with Takealot, with the technology platform cleverly harnessed to drive growth since then.

Remember the sharing economy brings people together through technology to exchange or rent access to goods and services, so entrepreneurs are building this economy by leveraging emerging digital technologies to meet customer needs in new and disruptive ways.

Digital and mobile technologies have combined with public support to create a host of opportunities to transform the way government manages the infrastructure it has already acquired. For instance, through MuniRent, six local governments in Michigan are already renting equipment to and from each other.

How African companies and governments react to this change brought about the platform economy will define their prospects going forward. The platforms they use will serve as the pathways to the new digital economies that will drive growth and jobs across the continent. They will form the pillars of entire value chains in the future and so African companies need to ensure they make these decisions wisely – and fast because there is no doubt that the digital partnerships African companies make today will determine how successful they will be tomorrow.

Platform economy is one of the topics to be discussed at the Accenture Innovation Conference taking place on 17 October in Johannesburg.
