The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has warned Nigerians against sharing their personal data, particularly their National Identification Numbers (NINs), with unauthorized individuals or organizations, reports ITREALMS.

This warning comes after reports emerged of some individuals being lured into submitting their NINs for financial compensation, which is a clear violation of the NIMC Act and other relevant laws.

The NIMC emphasizes that sharing NINs for monetary gain is illegal and punishable under Nigerian law. Citizens are advised not to disclose their NINs to unauthorized parties, as this can lead to identity theft, financial fraud, and other malicious activities.

A press statement endorsed by the Head, Corporate Communications, NIMC, Dr. Kayode Adegoke and available to ITREALMS, informed that the Commission has apprehended individuals involved in the illegal collection of NINs and will prosecute them to the full extent of the law.

NIMC also recommended that citizens download the NINAuth App to enjoy seamless benefits, including protection and security of their NINs, and control over their personal information.

Pointing out that Any NIN presented to access services must be duly verified before granting such services.

This, NIMC said would ensure the security and integrity of the national identity database, while encouraging reporting of any unauthorized activity involving citizens NIN.
