Smart energy meter shipments reach 31.3m units - ITREALMS
The new report from the Internet of Things (IoT) analyst firm, Berg Insight, has indicated that yearly shipments of smart energy meters in Europe will reach a record level of 31.3 million units in 2018, reports ITREALMS.
Smart electricity meter shipments grew 16 per cent compared to the previous year to 22.2 million units.
ITREALMS gathered that at the same time smart gas meter shipments increased 9 percent to 9.1 million units.
Growth in both segments, ITREALMS gathered will be sustained into 2019 and 2020, driven by ongoing large-scale roll-outs in multiple countries.
According to the Principal Analyst, Berg Insight, Mr. Tobias Ryberg, “The past year was another positive one for the adoption of smart meters in Europe. Deployments of smart electricity and gas meters ramped up to volume in France. Italy continued with the installation of smart gas meters in parallel to the rollout of second-generation smart electricity meters. Spain and Norway completed their nationwide rollouts, while Lithuania became the latest country to announce one”.
ITREALMS also gathered that United Kingdom (UK) and Benelux were other regions with significant developments.
Further, ITREALMS reports that while still behind the official timetable, the UK smart meter rollout continued in 2018, with the last pieces of technical framework finally coming into place at the end of the year.
Belgium followed the Netherlands in adopting smart meters, with the launch of a large-scale project in Flanders. Germany however only made little progress with the partial rollout to larger customers.
ITREALMS equally reported that adoption is still held back by the lack of certified smart meter data gateways. In the first wave, Germany is looking to equip approximately 5.5 million customers using more than 6,000 kWh per year or feeding solar power into the grid with smart meters.

CWG builds smart pre-paid meter, anti-power theft solutions - ITREALMS
The CWG Plc has concluded plans to
unveil its smart meter and anti-power theft solutions for commercialization,
reports ITREALMS.
The Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, CWG Plc,
Mr. James Agada gave this insight on Thursday at a seminar organized by the
company in Lagos, in collaboration with the Nigerian Information Technology
Reporters Association (NITRA).
He told
ITREALMS it took CWG plc some three years to conceptualize, design,
produce and develop the software to drive its smart metering and anti-theft
solutions, which will be a win-win solution for both electricity consumers and
distribution companies respectively.
A
unique point of the CWG Smart Utility Solutions (SUS), Agada said, is that the
meters will be coming to the consumer with a Wireless Fidelity (WiFi) embedded,
thereby offering the electricity consumers additional value added service (VAS).
Just
as he said the company also developed anti-power solution to combat power theft
in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) if not eliminate the scourge
of theft in the electricity distribution in the country.
Explaining further on these solutions, the Vice President,
Corporate Development at CWG Plc, Mr. Daniel Shobhan Das, told ITREALMS as at 14th August 2017, the
federal government made way for the sale of meters to the customers directly,
which acted as stimulus to CWG in its drive to make life meaningful for
Nigerians.
Mr. Das also highlighted that CWG smart meters come in two format,
namely single phase and three phases
According to the VP, CWG SUS, comes with high speed fouth-generation
(4G) LongTerm Evolution (LTE) Modem plus a Wi-Fi router inbuilt into the
Customer Interface Unit (CIU) for wireless Internet Access, remote OFF/ON of
electric supply line, mobile and web-based token recharge with manual option as
a fail-safe measure in addition to the web based dashboard view and control of
the energy consumption.
He pointed out that CWG-SUS, consumers could monitor dual energy sources,
thereby saving cost on expensive cabling from dual sources.
“Single cable input to measure both sources,” he declared,
stressing that mobile based energy management and control has mobile-based
consumption and billing information from both the public electricity power
supply and generating set.

Smart single fibre fusion splicer, 41S debuts - ITREALMS
Latest
single fibre active cladding alignment fusion splicer, 41S, designed for Fiber To The X (FTTx) .applications, has made a debut, reports ITRealms.

The
next-generation smart 41S splicer, ITRealms gathered would boast innovative
features in a compact and robust package, especially for operators to save time
and cost with the new wireless solution.
ITRealms gathered that Fujikura Europe launched the service, stressing that wirelessly
connecting to the CT50 fibre cleaver using Bluetooth technology, the 41S
enables a range of pioneering functions that will improve the overall
installation time, cost and efficiency for operators.
Compared to
its predecessor the 22S, the 41S has been upgraded and offers installers the
convenience of a 5” colour touch-panel display, improved v-groove illumination
and the benefit of easy splice protector positioning. The machine re-assures
users of reliable splice results using CORE loss estimation using Warm Image
Splicing Technology.
The issue of
poor fibre cleaving due to worn, incorrectly adjusted or damaged cleaver blades
is conveniently dealt with. When the 41S detects a high cleave angle or bad end
shape, it sends a blade position change instruction to the cleaver. The CT50
cleaver then rotates the cleaver blade automatically to the next position,
restoring optimum cleaving performance.
By utilising
the low radio power of Bluetooth technology, other equipment nearby will not be
interfered with. Operators can benefit from the “always on” technology due to
the low power consumption of the Bluetooth, which means that batteries can last
for several months.
“To ensure
optimum results, fibres need to be spliced in a safe, hassle-free and efficient
manner to avoid unnecessary, extra work for operators,” said Neil Bessant at
Fujikura Europe. “Cleaving fibres using a cleaver without the benefit of
wireless connectivity for an operator is a tricky, and often a less than
successful game to play. If multiple errors are made it leads to increased
costs to replace the fibres, as well as lost time and ultimately a decrease in
overall optical performance.
“Our latest
addition to the splicing family, the 41S, is flexible, smart and efficient and
therefore makes a huge difference to this process. The easy-to-handle qualities
of the solution means quick and simple splicing, with performance never being
compromised.”
In addition
to cleave performance, the smart splicer can also wirelessly monitor battery
and power usage of the CT50 cleaver. The 41S comes enabled with a touch screen
menu as standard, but also maintains the traditional easy-to-use hard button
navigation system. The splicer retains all of the unique, class-leading
features from the current high-performance flagship line-up of Fujikura
splicers, including: quick splice and heat times, fully ruggedized features,
and user customizable settings.
The 41S,
along with a full range of Fujikura Europe’s fibre optic solutions, will first
be displayed at ECOC (European Conference on Optical Communication) in Rome,
Italy from the 24th – 26th September 2018

Self-Powering Smart Cities - ITREALMS
The cost of renewable energies such as tidal and wave power in the open sea, wind and solar power have come down greatly in recent years but they are rarely considered viable for base power, largely because of the energy storage needed. As this gets solved by going beyond lithium-ion batteries, there are great growth opportunities for supercapacitors and reflow batteries in the $30 billion off-grid and the huge on-grid energy market.
Radically improved supercapacitors will provide short term storage such as at turn-of-tide (8 of the top 10 cities are on the sea) and new batteries will provide longer term storage such as overnight for solar. The IDTechEx Research reports, Redox Flow Batteries 2018-2028: Markets, Trends, Applications and Supercapacitor Technologies and Markets 2018-2028 explain fully. Electricity will be made where it is needed as we bypass increasing attacks on long grid powerlines by cyberterrorists and increasingly violent weather. Reflow batteries are usually non-flammable, environmentally friendly, can be repaired, are relatively non-toxic and have lifespans of at least 10,000 cycles, maintaining 90% of their capacity over 20 years. Supercapacitors store energy more briefly but delight with longer life than either of them and effectively infinite cycle life: their power density is magnitudes ahead. The new IDTechEx Research report, Supercapacitor Materials and Technology Roadmap 2019-2029 scopes pseudocapacitor variants approaching lithium-ion battery energy density.
Most supercapacitor options are non-toxic and non-flammable. Astoundingly, Imperial College London supercapacitors now form load-bearing structures of lighter weight than the dumb structure they replace. This “negative mass energy”, puts batteries on the back foot as the bulky, heavier option now. Currently all batteries, even new solid state ones, swell and shrink in use so they cannot become load-bearing smart materials.
Raghu Das CEO of IDTechEx says, “The Levelised Cost of Electricity for the best wind and solar plants has plummeted to below most coal, nuclear and gas plants. However, wind and solar are severely intermittent, this being usefully reduced but not eliminated by combining the two. The situation will improve as wind turbines grow higher to where winds are stronger at night and more consistent in the day. As they cease to be viable beyond 300 meters, new Airborne Wind Energy grabs wind at up to 2000 meters.
There, the wind is even faster, and even more consistent and power produced increases as the cube of the wind speed. Supercapacitors can provide the brief energy storage needed as AWE is cycled like a kite. Self-powering smart cities like Belmont California and Facebook’s Toronto suburb are on the way as Oregon and other cities even make electricity from their water supply pipes and 110 solar road projects are proceeding globally.
The IDTechEx Research report Smart Glass and Windows 2018-2028: Electronic Shading and Semi-Transparent PV convinces that 1MW solar windows in a high rise are in prospect. A Saudi car park provides 10MW – the whole demand for a nearby high-rise office block. Indeed, Ulleung Island Korea will provide its 7MW for 10,000 residents entirely from wind, solar, geothermal and small hydro power, ditching diesel completely.

African Tech Hubs diversifying with innovation - ITREALMS
The innovation and entrepreneurship play an
ever-increasing role in growing Africa’s emerging technology ecosystem.
According to research by the GSMA Ecosystem Accelerator, over the past two
years alone, Africa has seen the number of innovation hubs double. Whilst the
big 3 cities – Nairobi, Lagos, Cape Town – have been dominating the Sub-Saharan
growth narrative, the next wave of incubators are arriving from new ecosystem
cities in North Africa.
And the cities driving this growth, Casablanca, Cairo,
Sousse and Algiers, are serious about generating sustainable operating models
in the fast evolving ICT landscape to overcome core business challenges around
viability, future-proofing the business and most importantly, producing
continuous success stories.
Funding in North Africa is shifting from relying on
public spending
According to the Disrupt Africa Tech Start-ups
Funding Report 2017 (http://disrupt-africa.com/funding-report), funding in
African tech start-ups surged 51% to reach $195 million in 2017, as compared to
figures of the same period in 2016. When it comes to funding, the majority of
Africa’s tech hubs are grant funded by Governments and foundations, however
there has been a growth of social ventures and a trend toward for profit and
self-funded endeavours to fast track growth.
Rabeh Arezki, Chief Economist for Middle East and
North Africa Region (MNA) at the World Bank stated, “When it comes to
sustainable funding, African tech hubs tend to focus on demand-driven service
models that solve problems and support the specific needs of an ecosystem. To
succeed, a modern innovation hub needs to pinpoint a niche in growth areas and
deliver that proposition. Key areas ripe for development are start-ups looking
at improving Internet infrastructure, payment systems and education. These are
the types of businesses we see succeeding.”

remarked, ‘What’s important is that we are seeing the gaps in infrastructure
that impact technology development, digital entrepreneurship, and innovation
closing. What’s powerful is that technology hubs are facilitating the

hubs are filling those skill gaps which will only continue to progress the
development of the local ecosystem in a positive way.’

investment climate and hosting major regional events like the upcoming Global

27-28 2018, where 4,000 smart city leaders from around the world will discuss
how smart technology and ecosystems, smart data and sustainability and the
Government’s role in stimulating new technology are changing the landscape.
Founder of Smart City Algiers, Fatiha Slimani said "Algiers smart city
project is in a way our commitment to develop our city based on principles of
durability, sustainability and innovation. We’re trying to find solution to
what we call - the cascading technology trap - where technology moves way
faster than policy makers' decision making."
Innovation hubs are diversifying their scope
We are also seeing the new innovation hubs adopting
hybrid systems to enable sustainability. Many choose a mix of community tech
space and ‘paid-for’ co-working space, though corporate partnerships are
increasingly becoming more common, especially though mobile operators. Over 14%
of active tech hubs in Africa now supported by mobile operators like MNT, due
to the opportunity to scale quickly. Examples of this include Orange–Start on

create their own private funds by taking equity in early stage start-ups whilst
offering business support.

African smart innovation gospel, according to Nkem Begho
The Chief Executive
Officer of Future Software Resources Limited, Nkemdilim Begho, today,
joined Heads of African State, delegations of 80 member countries,
international organizations, government establishments, public corporations,
private businesses, financial institutions, media, among others in South Korea,
adding voice to the promotion of African smart innovation and entrepreneurship,
reports ITRealms.
Speaking
at the dual conferences in South Korea, tagged KOAFEC 2018 and the African
Development Bank Meeting 2018, alongside other leading voices in Africa
including Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Board Chair, Gavi, the Global Alliance for
Vaccines and Immunisation, between 21st May, 2018 through
25th at the BEXCO, Busan.
Begho
told ITRealms ahead of the meetings that as a strong promoter of software in

KOAFEC 2018 panel discussion, according to her, would focus on how
smart infrastructure could contribute to Africa’s socio-economic transformation
in the areas such as energy, transportation, agriculture, sustainable
environment, health, education, e-government, ICT, etc.

said by Mrs Begho, who is software guru and leading women in Information and
Communication Technology (ICT) in Nigeria, her discussion would focus on how
software and IT consultancy service providers like Future Software Resources
Limited could be involved in the development of smart infrastructure in Africa.
ITRealms also gathered that some key
talking points for her, include: IT Consultancy Services, Development of
end user applications and interfaces, Driving Digital
inclusion, Inclusive Content creation and development in local
languages,
“Digital
Marketing to engage with the citizens to drive adoption rates, Capacity
Development to increase skilled labour and ensure self-sustainability of the
smart infrastructure, among others are key touchpoints,” she said.
Further,
she said, the second session panelists at the African Development Bank
meeting would be dealing with how best to promote innovation
and entrepreneurship in Africa.
Underlining
focus, she said, would be the current status of startups in Africa and the
future plans for expanding innovation and entrepreneurship on the
continent.
Begho
who has represented Nigeria in other global forums to tell the story of how
best Nigeria could be retool, said that the key objective on the second panel
would contribute to innovation that raises productivity and growth, leading to
job creation and poverty reduction in developing countries.
Equally,
she said, the discussion, would focus on the need for the
4th Industrial Revolution and Entrepreneurship, role of Public - Private sector
to activate innovation and entrepreneurship, International
Cooperation to expand join ventures, exchange of Technology and Human Resources
of companies in Africa, current status of startups in Africa and action
plan, strategies for Startups and Scale-ups, role of young
African Entrepreneurs and ways of shared growth and
sustainability between Africa and Asia
Notable
panelists at this session, she said, would include Connyong Jennifer Moon,
Chief Anchor, Arirang TV Network, Patrick Vermeulen, Professor and Academic

Akwa-Ibom: From smart city to smart state
First, it is essential to state that Akwa Ibom was the
first State in Nigeria to establish and enthrone a State Information (IT)
Policy and created a Science and Technology Office at the Cabinet level –
represented by a Commissioner.
True to type, the State has also become the first to appoint a
full-fledged ICT professional as SSG. Indeed, the ‘first kid on the block’
concept in contemporary development is not new. Chief Obafemi Awolowo applied it
in 1955 when he enthroned ‘Free Education’ in the South-West and Bill Gates of MS
and Steve Jobs of Apple PC applied it to fire and light-up the accelerated
development of global ICT ecosystem.
It was year 2003 – sitting on the dark windows of a
Night Bus to Uyo – I headed into an adventure of the unknown. The mission was
to explore the e-Readiness of Akwa Ibom State ICT development. Oblivious of the
challenges before me, delighting from the bus on arrival on the early morning
the next day, I was welcomed by a refreshing breeze full of rich oxygen
engulfed in a distant voice of ‘Welcome to Uyo’. It was at that moment that I
realized that my mission was to lay a foundation for ICT as the most strategic
imperative for the sustainable development and competitiveness of the State in
the very near future.
Today, that future is here – giving us the privilege
to look back and advance our evaluation as proof of concept for assessing 21st
Century development and growth at the State level. Before we evaluate the
advantages of Akwa Ibom State as one of the very first to establish an IT
Policy, let’s look at the future of ICT e-readiness of Akwa Ibom State in view
of the current state of things.
Based on my assessment of the ICT landscape in
Akwa Ibom 2016-2018, the state will be one of the most advanced ICT Smart-State
in Nigeria and indeed perhaps the first to deploy Robots for Education, Health,
State Security, Essential public service, etc for sustainable development (derived
from her current advantages of small population of 5.4m, enormous resources and
abundant intelligent pioneers with ‘Can-do Sprit’); Readiness for acceleration
of robust ICT infrastructure development, with respect to State-wide Broadband
Internet access, State of the Art Fibre Optics Network for state security and
youth empowerment will unleash monumental innovation beyond basic imagination.
The
State would harness the advantages of Internet of Things and Nano Technologies
as diversification strategy of Akwa Ibom economy from Oil & Gas to
Information Intelligence resources in preparation for Information Society (IS).
Before other States realize the ICT State of Things in
Akwa Ibom, the environment would have propelled the State from the shadows of ‘Smart-City’
to the villa to the metropolis of Smart-States by 2030.
This would be actualized
by intensifying AI and Machine to Machine (M2M) Solutions strategies and
multiply the dividend to her people exponentially. The secret of all these is
hidden on the probability that the State government will promote the
establishment State Innovation development Fund for Software Engineering
Institutes (SDI), Code-accelerator based Education, Innovation Hubs, Critical Local
Data centres, ICT Research Centres, etc – leading to position Akwa Ibom as the
first destination for ICT Skill Resources and solutions to serve the nation and
the ICT-hungry African market.
Today, as we speak, many States in Nigeria are yet to develop State ICT
policy and their ICT development funding mechanisms are at the lowest bottom of
the budget ladder.
Flash back, the same scenario was experienced in 1955, when
Chief Obafemi Awolowo established Free-Eduction in the South West Region of
Nigeria, while others were asleep – making the South West the current leader in
the statistical spread of those who can read, write and educated all through
West Africa and beyond. That is not all, the South West ICT agenda of
empowering many millions of its citizenry with ICT competence of ‘how to code’
will further put the region many miles ahead of the others in the next decades.
That is where Akwa Ibom will stand tall amongst equals in the emerging creative
society. The State has done well in ICT spend and investment over the years.
Moving forward with the deserved appointment of Dr,
Emmanuel Ekuwem - an exceptional IT Professional and renowned Tele
Communications expert as the State Secretary of Government of Akwa Ibom State, the
expectations are that Akwa Ibom State will undoubtedly become the first address
for ICT knowledge advancement, solutions, services and creative dimensions for
the sustainable future.
The current landscape ICT advantage of Akwa-Ibom State
was conceptualised in 2003. This established the State Information Technology
(IT) and Science and Technology (S&T) Policies respectively. These sets of
policy frameworks were aimed at: Creating knowledge and innovation clusters for
strategic and sustainable development of the State. Retooling the workforce in
readiness for e-Government programs designed to meet the basic and central
needs of the State.
Finetuning
leadership and governance operations. Discovering and enthroning new knowledge
resources to serve core business–commercialisation activities. Reposition the State’s ICT brand to engage national
and International entrepreneurial and innovation culture. Engaging knowledge workers and core Stakeholders to relocate
to the State for the real mission of adding sustainable value State development
and prosperity.
In the
beginning, the central goals include but not limited to the following: Transform
Akwa Ibom through ICT. Conceptualize the establishment of Akwa Ibom State’s ICT
Policy and premier Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Park as the
central Hub and strategic platform for transforming and accelerating the
development and advancement of new Knowledge Resources to empower existing
start-ups, small and medium scale businesses and industries. Apply R&D to
understand and master the secrets behind accelerated ICT, future applications and
related Technology development curves in innovation, electronics, advanced
materials business and e-Government development. Develop and built new
Entrepreneurs and Techno-preneurs Culture.
While wishing
Akwa Ibom State well in pursuance of her sustainable ICT mission, there is need
to invigorate and apply design-thinking process to accelerate Youth employment
through ICT knowledge empowerment and the commercialization of innovative State
technologies. Above all, there is need to improve and protect the State’s
Critical ICT Infrastructure, business incubation, knowledge coaching, skills
development, strategic relationship networks and access to capital.

records, Dr. Emmanuel Ekuwem shared the vision with professional advice at the
founding stage of the State’s IT Policy. Those who were in the line of fire for
actualizing the establishment of the foundation of Akwa Ibom State’s ICT vision
and mission at the critical stage include but now limited to the

Secure your smart devices in six ways
The world has gone mobile. This
fact is justified by the increasing use of the smartphone and other mobile
devices, with many tech-savvy individuals relying on these gadgets as handy
substitutes to laptops and desktop computers. Considering the many tasks people
carry out on their devices include mobile banking and online shopping, among
others, the importance of ensuring the security of that device cannot be
over-emphasized.
The following tips from the
Research and Development Unit of Yudala, Nigeria’s fastest growing e-commerce
platform, will help keep your devices secure and less vulnerable to attack from
hackers or data compromise in the event of a loss.
1.Embrace
encryption: One of the best ways to safeguard your device is
to encrypt your phone storage. Most smartphones have this encryption feature
built in, hence your data is seamlessly encrypted even without your notice. Should
your device not have this feature automatically enabled, you can activate it
manually. With encryption, all the data in your device including pictures,
messages, emails, etc. are scrambled into unreadable form. In the event that

this, you can access the Internet using a private network while connecting to a
public or unsecured Wi-Fi. In other words, a VPN creates a secure, encrypted
connection, which can be thought of as a tunnel, between your computer and a
server operated by the VPN service. Applications running across the VPN may
therefore benefit from the functionality, security, and management of the
private network. There are several free VPNs you can download and install on
your device to provide this extra layer of security.
3.Never
give out your device’s IMEI number: IMEI (International Mobile
Equipment Identity) is a unique 15-digit serial number given to a device. Every
mobile phone, GSM modem or device with a built-in phone or modem has its own
unique IMEI number. With this number, you can check some information about the
device such as the country of origin, manufacturer/brand or model. Scammers
posing as representatives of telecoms companies have been known to request the
IMEI number of phone and other device users. Please bear in mind that it is
unwise to give out your device’s IMEI number. You may just be handing over the
vital information required for a potential hacker to clone your device and use
it maliciously.
4.Be
app-smart and not app-happy: Many smart device users are
often app-happy. They waste no time
in downloading every new app they come across without a second thought to the
benefits or access to personal information requested by these apps. To ensure your device is better secured, you
must endeavor to be app-smart rather than being app-happy. As a matter of
importance, you must make it a habit to read the full detailed description of
any app you wish to download. A significant number of apps request access to
some features that may compromise your data such as your phone’s contacts,
camera, emails, etc. In cases such as this and to avoid exposing your details,
it is best to search for a less-intrusive alternative. Furthermore, being
app-smart means that you download apps only from a trusted source such as
AppStore for iOS devices or Google Play for Android.
5.Software
update is key: One of the most essential means of securing your
device is through regular software update. This involves keeping the operating
system software and various application software current with the latest updates
from the manufacturer. It is important to note that these updates will likely
include security improvements too which will make your device more resilient to
attacks. As a result, you must bear in
mind, when making the decision to purchase a phone or mobile device, to choose
a model that can be updated throughout the device’s lifespan.
6.Set
up remote wipe on your device: For most smartphone users, this
feature is often supported. All you have to do is turn it on. With this
functionality, you are protected from compromising your sensitive information
as you can easily wipe all data remotely once you lose your device. Remote wipe
occurs as the first thing when the device connects to the internet.
Interestingly, through other associated features, you can even take some steps
to locating your missing device by either ringing the lost phone, changing the
lock screen with a customized message or erasing all your data.

Rwanda, Microsoft partner for nationwide smart classrooms by Dec. 2017
The Rwandan government and Microsoft have concluded plans to
embark on a nationwide smart classrooms deployment by December 2017, reports
ITRealms.
The Regional Education Industry Manager for West, East,
Central Africa and Indian Ocean Islands, at Microsoft, Warren La Fleur told TheNew Times in Kigali that the first batch of smart classrooms will be ready by
the end of the current fiscal year.
The report also added that Rwandan schools are expected to
start using smart classrooms by the end of this year as a result of a
partnership agreement signed three years ago between the Government of Rwanda
and Microsoft on digitization of the country’s education sector.
ITRealms further gathered that the smart classrooms are
expected to offer students access to computers and basic software in addition
to internet access towards digitization of teaching and learning.
“I would say that before the end of the current financial year
you will have smart classrooms in Rwanda where this new way of teaching with
digital identity will certainly be in place,” Wareen said.
According to the Education Minister, Dr Musafiri Papias
Malimba, recently, students in all schools are expected to have access to the
internet by 2020, as currently, only 531 schools in Rwanda out of the 3,500 are
connected.
Rwanda is touted as one of the fastest growing countries in
Africa.

Nigeria needs 80,000 base stations for smart economy - Danbatta
Nigeria with the population of over 180 million needs between
70,000 and 80,000 telecommunication base stations to actualize her dream of
joining the club of countries working toward making Internet of Things (IoT) a
reality by leveraging Forth Generation (4G) and Fifth Generation (5G) networks,
reports ITRealms.
The Internet of things (IoT), ITRealms reports, is the inter-networking of physical devices, vehicles (also referred to as "connected devices" and "smart devices"), buildings, and other items—embedded with electronics, software, sensors, actuators, and network connectivity that enable these objects to collect and exchange data, according to Wikipedia.
Disclosing this at a sitting of the House Representatives’
Ad Hoc Committee investigating the health implications of mounting
telecommunications masts close to building, in Abuja, the Executive Vice
Chairman, Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Prof Umar Garba Danbatta, said
the country currently has less than 50,000 base stations.
“3G, 4G going to 5G networks are going to usher this country
into smart applications, the Internet of Things or the smart world and cities
we are talking about. And of course because of the additional burden on
infrastructure, the present capacity of telecom infrastructure is grossly
inadequate to cater for these additional platforms or services we talk
about’
“Therefore we will need from 70,000 to 80,000 base
transceiver masts to be able to provide the effective capacity that’s needed to
deploy 4G going to 5G,” he said while responding to questions from members of
the ad hoc committee.
He later called on other approving agencies at all levels of
government in the country synergize with NCC a view to achieving the target, noting
that the United Kingdom (UK), with a population of almost one third of Nigeria
already has close to 60,000 masts.
On concerns about health implications to exposure to
electromagnetic field, Danbatta said researches so far conducted in the area
have not indicated any adverse health concerns.
“With regards to other professional bodies like Nigerian
Society of Engineers (NSE) we don’t have any quarrel with their positions. The
only question is when we say exposure to electromagnetic field is hazardous to
health what level are we talking about?
We have to define the level of exposure that is hazardous to human
beings.
“Of course if you generate a massive electromagnetic field
of unprecedented proportion and put a person inside, there will be medical
consequences. But what we are saying is that: provided the limit specified is
observed and NCC is there to ensure compliance with that limit, there is no
health hazard. There is a limit of
safety below which electromagnetic fields do not cause any harm to health,” he
declared.
