The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has commenced a high-level Stakeholder Engagement on the Spectrum Roadmap 2025–2030, signaling a decisive move to expand Nigeria’s digital frontier through the deployment of Multi-Gigabit Wireless Systems, reports ITREALMS.
The three-day engagement, held at the Communications and Digital Economy Complex in Mbora, Abuja, focuses on the critical frameworks for the 60 GHz band and the opening of the lower 6 GHz band for Wi-Fi 6—technologies expected to revolutionize high-speed internet access and indoor connectivity across the federation.

Key participants on Day 1 included Engr. Atiku Lawal, Head of Spectrum Administration (NCC); Engr. Gidado Maigana Ahmed, Head of Fixed Networks and Converged Services (NCC); and Dr. Joseph Emeshili, Head of Spectrum Planning (NCC), alongside Mr. Abubakar Hammanyaji, Head of Spectrum Assignment.
Representing the international development and private sector perspectives were Mr. Idongesit Udo, Country Lead of the Digital Access Program at the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), and Dr. Nihinlola Mary Fafore, Deputy Director of Business Environment/Affairs at Huawei Nigeria.
Opening the lower 6 GHz band for Wi-Fi 6 is seen as a major win for the "last-mile" connectivity challenge. By allowing for license-exempt use in this band, the NCC is lowering the barrier for local ISPs to provide fiber-like speeds wirelessly, reducing the cost of data for the average Nigerian consumer.
