The chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Dr. Adamu Musa Aliyu, has expressed deep shock and condolences to Maureen Chigbo, Publisher of Realnews, following the brutal murder of her elder sister, Barrister Princess Nwamaka Mediatrix Chigbo, reports ITREALMS.
In a condolence letter dated January 15, 2026, signed by the ICPC Spokesperson, John Okor Odey, the Commission described the murder as "heartbreaking and unacceptable."
“Her murder in the most despicable manner is deeply troubling. Such violence continues to undermine the sanctity of human life within our nation,” the statement read.
Dr. Aliyu urged Maureen Chigbo to remain steadfast in her advocacy against national menaces, noting that her commitment is vital in the ongoing fight against corruption, banditry, and kidnapping.
The tragedy began on Monday, January 5, when Nwamaka was abducted while on a phone call with her sister, Anthonia. The line remained open as Anthonia heard her sister’s distress cries before the phone went silent.
Subsequent attempts to reach the lawyer were met with hostility. A male voice reportedly answered her phone, raining curses in English and Hausa, demanding a ransom of ₦3 million.
According to the family, the kidnappers refused further communication until a final, haunting call was made. Family members heard Nwamaka screaming in pain: “I am dying… save me, please send the money, I am dying,” before the line went permanently dead.
Despite constant communication between the Chigbo family and the FCT Police Command, including the Commander of the 'Scorpion Squad' the rescue mission ended in tragedy.
At 4:00 AM on Tuesday, January 6, police informed the family that a woman had been found in critical condition and moved to a specialist hospital. Upon flying from Lagos to Abuja, Maureen Chigbo discovered her sister’s lifeless body in the mortuary. The body bore signs of extreme torture, including a cracked skull and swollen eyes.
The late Barrister Nwamaka was a titan in the legal community and a devout Catholic. Her professional and spiritual footprints include:
Legal Advocacy: Former Treasurer of the NBA Abuja; member of FIDA, Otu Okaiwu, and the African Women Lawyers Association (AWLA).
Leadership: Former Vice President of the National Association of Catholic Lawyers, Abuja.
Faith: Author of a book on the Infant Jesus and an active member of the Legion of Mary and the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
The Chigbo family, while thanking the police for their initial cooperation, has called for a thorough investigation to ensure the perpetrators of this "barbaric act" are brought to justice.
Funeral arrangements for the late legal luminary are expected to be announced shortly.
