Major professional and religious groups have rolled out a comprehensive programme of activities to honour the late Barrister Princess Mediatrix Nwamaka Chigbo in Abuja, prior to the conveyance of her remains to her home state, Anambra, for final interment, reports ITREALMS.
Barrister Chigbo, a renowned Abuja-based lawyer, was brutally murdered by kidnappers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on January 5, 2026.
The activities were announced jointly by the Blessed Iwene Tansi Catholic Community of St. Mary John Vianney (SJMV), Lugbe, Abuja, and the Global Association of Female Attorneys (GAFA).
According to the SJMV, the rites will feature three days of prayers, hymns, and Requiem Masses at the SJMV Catholic Church, Lugbe, Abuja.
The activities commence, Monday, January 12, at 5:30 PM. This opening session will be led by the Sacred Heart Society and will be followed immediately by an evening Mass.
The spiritual observance continues on Tuesday, January 13, when the Iwene Tansi Community will lead the prayers starting at 5:30 PM, concluding with the celebration of another evening Mass.
On Wednesday, January 14, a Requiem Mass for the repose of the soul of the late Princess Chigbo will be held to round off the prayer sessions at the SJMV Catholic Church, starting at 6:00 PM.
On Thursday, January 15, the venue shifts to the Our Lady Queen of Nigeria Pro-Cathedral, Area 3, Abuja, which will celebrate a Requiem Mass beginning at 6:00 PM.
All the religious societies to which the late Barrister belonged, including the Infant Jesus, Mother of Perpetual Help, Legion of Mary, and Divine Mercy, are expected to be in attendance at this Mass.
Additionally, the Global Association of Female Attorneys (GAFA) has announced it will host a special Night of Tribute on Friday, January 16, to honour the life, legacy, and cherished memories of their colleague.
The event is scheduled to begin at 4:00 PM at the Delight Garden and Park, Plot 990, Joshua Madaki Close, Apo Zone E, near Start-Rite School, Abuja, with a dress code of black.
Chinelo Virginia Iriele, President of GAFA, described the upcoming event as a time for reflection, remembrance, and mutual support as they celebrate a life well lived and bid her a peaceful farewell.
She noted that although words may never fully capture the depth of their sorrow, the presence of friends and colleagues will mean a great deal as they come together to honour her enduring impact and beautiful legacy.
Realnews previously reported that the Chigbo family announced the death of Princess Nwamaka Mediatrix Chigbo following her abduction by unidentified kidnappers on Monday, January 5. Despite the family's frantic efforts to rescue her, including enduring calls where the kidnappers demanded ransom and the lawyer was heard screaming in pain—she was eventually found in critical condition on January 6.
She was rushed to an Abuja specialist hospital where her sister, Dr. Maureen Chigbo, Publisher of Realnews Magazine, identified her body. The corpse bore signs of torture, including bruises, swollen eyes, and a cracked skull.
The police have assured the family that the investigation is active and that the culprits will be apprehended.
Late Barrister Chigbo was a distinguished legal practitioner and a devout Catholic.
Her professional and religious portfolio included serving as the former Treasurer of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Abuja, and holding membership in the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) and the Global Association of Female Attorneys (GAFA).
She also served as the President of the Catholic Lawyers Association, Abuja Branch. A devout Catholic who authored a book on Infant Jesus, she was the vice president of the Infant Jesus Association and a member of the Mother of Perpetual Help Catholic Group until her death.
She is survived by her siblings, including Dr. Maureen Chigbo, Barrister Mrs. Anthonia Ejenike, Nwakaego Chigbo, Celestine Chigbo, and Gerald Chigbo.
