As the world commemorates the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) 2025 on December 3rd, the Centre for Media and Society (CEMESO) joins the global community in highlighting the urgent need to accelerate efforts toward creating truly inclusive societies for all, particularly in Nigeria, reports ITREALMS.
This year’s theme, “Fostering Disability-Inclusive Societies for Advancing Social Progress,” underscores the critical link between disability inclusion and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
CEMESO notes that while Nigeria has ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) and enacted the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act, 2018, the reality on the ground still presents significant barriers.
These challenges include widespread lack of physical access in public buildings and transportation, limited availability of information in accessible formats like Braille and sign language, and high rates of exclusion from education, employment, and political life.
CEMESO is therefore calling on all stakeholders; government, civil society, the media, and the private sector, to move beyond mere advocacy and commit to tangible, measurable actions in the coming year.
"We urge the government to ensure the full implementation of the 2018 Disability Act, including the immediate establishment and adequate funding of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities, and to prioritize disability budgeting across all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).
"We call on the media to commit to responsible and non-stigmatizing reporting on disability issues and to increase the use of Sign Language Interpreters for major broadcasts. The private sector must ensure workplace accommodations and enforce a minimum quota for the employment of persons with disabilities, while also prioritizing digital accessibility in all online services.
"Finally, we appeal to the general public and civil society to challenge discriminatory attitudes and foster a culture of respect and inclusion at the community level."
CEMESO, reiterated, it remains committed to using the media as a tool to promote these rights and will continue to advocate for a Nigeria where every citizen, regardless of ability, can participate fully and equally.
