The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has taken a firm stance on transparency and accountability in the governance of internet resources by demanding from the African Network Information Center (AFRINIC) to release the full report of the investigation into the June 2025 election, reports ITREALMS.
ICANN in an open letter available to ITREALMS underscored its commitment to ensuring that regional internet registries (RIRs) operate with the highest standards of integrity and transparency, particularly in processes as critical as elections.
ITREALMS recalls that the June 2025 election at AFRINIC has been marred by controversy, with several issues raised regarding the conduct of the election process.
Additionally, ITREALMS gathered concerns about proxy abuses, unauthorized access to voter lists, and the abrupt suspension of the voting process have all contributed to a cloud of uncertainty over the legitimacy of the election.
In response to these concerns, ICANN has stepped in to ensure that AFRINIC adheres to global best practices in electoral transparency and accountability.
ICANN's suggestion to AFRINIC, ITREALMS also gathered was clear to release: "the full report of the investigation into the June 2025 election must be made public."
