Cyber-crimes: Nigeria tops African countries, loses $350m annually

Nigeria is on the lead of top three African countries, just as the nation lost $350m to cyber-crimes annually, reports ITRealms.

President of Cyber Security Expert Association of Nigeria (CSEAN), Mr. Remi Afon, disclosed this in a presentation at the 2017 Vienna Symposium on Global Cybersecurity Awareness Messaging, Austria entitled: "Cybersecurity in Africa: Changing the Perspectives" in association with Samaila Atsen Bako.

According to them, cybercrime costs the world economy the sum of US $500 billion, which is over the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of South Africa, estimated at $350.6 billion and slightly less than that of Nigeria, about $521.8 billion which is the continent's largest economy

As such Nigeria, they said, Nigeria losses $350 million to cybercrime yearly followed by Uganda $50 million and Kenya $250 million.

ITRealms reports that they disclosed that some 11 States out of the 54 countries on the continent have basic substantive and procedural law provisions in place, while a further 12 States seemed to have substantive and procedural law provisions partially in place.

“The majority of African States (30) did not have specific legal provisions on cybercrime and electronic evidence in force. Draft laws or amendments to existing legislation reportedly had been prepared in at least 15 States,” they said.

They noted that for the Cyber Security Experts Association of Nigeria (CSEAN), a not for profit group of professionals in the field of Information Security in Nigeria, has focus on awareness and training whereas advocating for strong legislative framework, government commitment, multi stakeholder approach, capacity building and cross border collaboration.

In addition, they said, CSEAN holds healthy debates to expand audience knowledge, awareness and understanding of the issues around cyber-crime with objective of sharing knowledge to grow the Information Security Industry in Nigeria via workshops and seminars.

Further, they said that CSEAN adopted Stop Think Connect, stressing that considering Africa’s youthful population, “our main focus is on the youth.”

CBN says business soars in April 2017, as agriculture tops subsector growth

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has said that businesses activities soared in the month of April 2017, just as agriculture topped the subsector growth, ITRealms exclusively reports.

The apex bank in its monthly survey by the management division of Statistics department, also known as the Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) revealed to ITRealms that business activity index rose to 53.3 points in April from its level of 49.8 points in March this year.

ITRealms gathered that under business activities, there were 12 sub-sectors which recorded growth in the following order: agriculture; utilities; transportation & warehousing; educational services; finance & insurance; water supply, sewage & waste management; public administration; electricity, gas, steam & air conditioning supply; real estate.

Also, ITRealms reports that the growth continued with rental & leasing; information & communication; health care & social assistance and repair, maintenance/washing of motor vehicles. The professional, scientific, & technical services subsector remained unchanged, while the remaining five sub-sectors recorded growth in the order: management of companies; arts, entertainment & recreation; construction; wholesale trade and accommodation & food services.

Equally, ITRealms reports that the production level index for manufacturing sector expanded for the second consecutive month in April 2017.

“The index at 58.5 points indicated an increase in production at a faster rate when compared to the 50.8 points in the previous month,” the survey revealed.

Whereas the 13 manufacturing sub-sectors recorded increase in production level led by chemical & pharmaceutical products.

ITRealms further recalls that the Statistics Department of CBN conducts a monthly survey of purchasing and supply executives of manufacturing and non-manufacturing organizations in 13 locations in Nigeria: two states in each of the six geo-political zones, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The survey results, ITRealms reports were used to compute the monthly Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) and were conducted on April 18th to 24th, 2017 with a total of 1,743 responses received from a sample of 1,950 respondents, representing a response rate of 89.4 per cent.

Making IoT networks tech-agnostic tops LPWA agenda

Africa regional spectrum tops agenda @ITU-ATU RRS 2017

Arising from the Regional Radiocommunication Seminar 2017 for Africa (RRS-17 Africa), which came to a close in Dakar, Senegal recently, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Member States with focus on spectrum management on the continent, reports ITRealms.

This seminar, ITRealms gathered was organized to address the regional radiocommunications issues and notification, coordination and recording of frequency assignments.

Jointly organized by the Ministère des Postes et des Télécommunications (MPT) and the Autorité de Régulation des Télécommunications et des Postes (ARTP) of Senegal, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the African Telecommunications Union (ATU) the seminar was opened by Mr Abdou Karim Sall, Director-General of the ARTP.

Some of the topics discussed during the forum, ITRealms reports, addressed challenges and opportunities for Africa, under the framework of WRC-19, in particular regarding “Emerging innovative technologies; 5G and IMT spectrum identification; and Digital terrestrial television.”

ITU Secretary-General, Houlin Zhao said that in view of the importance these matters hold for Africa, the forum programme has been devised such as to allow experts from the region to exchange views both among themselves but also with other specialists from other regions of the globe.

Also speaking, François Rancy, Director of ITU's Radiocommunication Bureau, pointed out that the forum further addressed difficulties encountered and solutions related to the migration to digital terrestrial television (DTT) in a round table for the participating countries.

Kenyans tops senders of mobile-to-mobile remittances

Electronic transfers via mobile money accounts for 93 per cent of WorldRemit latest transactions to Kenya showed that Kenyans have continued to be early adopters of innovative technology, even when abroad, reports ITRealms.

Revealing this on the sideline of the 10th anniversary of ground-breaking mobile money service M-PESA, WorldRemit in newly released data indicated that the Kenyan diaspora is the biggest sender of digital remittances to mobile accounts.

Mobile money has played a key role in the growth of WorldRemit’s Kenyan customer base, attracted by the low price, speed and convenience of sending instant remittances from the app or website directly to a mobile phone in Kenya.

In January 2017, WorldRemit customers transferred more than $140m (at annualised rate) to Kenya, making WorldRemit one of the largest remittance companies serving the Kenyan diaspora.

Top remittance-sending countries are the UK, Australia, US, Germany, Canada and Nordic countries.

Around three million Kenyans live abroad, with large communities in North America, Europe and Australia.

Remittances play an important role in Kenya’s economy – inward remittances reached a record value of just under $161m in November 2016, according to the Central Bank of Kenya, making it one of the nation’s top earners.

WorldRemit is now connected to over a fifth of all mobile money accounts - 112 million of 500 million mobile money accounts around the world.

74% of all international remittances to mobile money accounts coming from money transfer operators are sent via WorldRemit.

The company has pioneered mobile to mobile remittances, sending to 32 mobile money services in 24 countries - more than any other money transfer service.

Globally, WorldRemit customers send more than 580,000 transfers every month to over 140 destinations. WorldRemit makes sending money as easy as sending an instant message.

FillYaTank app tops 40 Nigerian winners @WSA 2016

Nigeria’s FillYaTank Mobile Application has been pronounced top 40 winners in the 2016 United Nations (UN’s) World Summit Award, showcasing the world’s best practices in digital innovation, reports ITRealms.

FillYaTank, ITRealms gathered, is a mobile app developed and produced by a Port Harcourt-based Uchechukwu Anderson Dim.

ITRealms also reports that FillYaTank Mobile Application which is available on IOS and Android platforms respectively via crowdsourcing application, and built to assist end-users save money and time buying Petroleum products (Petrol, Diesel, Kerosene and Gas). 

Confirming this to ITRealms, the Eminent National Expert to UN World Summit Award for Nigeria and Chief Software Architect at Programos, Mr. Amos Emmanuel, said that with FillYaTank mobile application users could build a community that help each other save money and time on petroleum product by reporting prices and availability. 

FillYaTank, he said, offers a game of “Spotting” which entail reporting prices and availability of petrol, diesel, Kerosene or Gas when one is buying in a filling station, passing a filling station going about their daily activity or a filling station they may live close to and earn points while doing so. 

Also, Amos said that the WSA winners were selected by a Jury of international Information and Communication Technology (ICT) experts in two democratic rounds, where each UN Member State is eligible to nominate one product per category for the World Summit Award.

“This way, any nomination results from a national pre-selection prior to the international WSA Jury and guarantees a fair and democratic process,” he said.

Stressing that there are some eight (8) categories under evaluation in WSA including Business & Commerce, Government & Citizen Engagement, Learning & Education, Environment & Green Energy, Tourism & Culture, Smart Settlements & Urbanization, Health & Well Being, Inclusion & Empowerment.

According to him, well-meaning Nigerian innovators and promoters of high-impact innovation could seek to be added to the Facebook forum for WSA Nigeria.   

Further, Amos said that Africa's chance was really tight at the global competition given that only Nigeria's National Nominees FillYaTank (Business & Commerce), ScholarX (Learning & Education), RedBank (Health & Wellbeing), and Law Pavilion (Government & Citizen Engagement) mobile apps along with Tunisia’s (3 products) and South Africa’s (4 products) were the african countries with products shortlisted into the grand jury final round.

Electronic fraud tops agenda at E-PPAN, CBN conference

The alarming growth of electronic frauds is on top of the agenda at the forthcoming annual Payment Systems and Fraud Conference slated for next month in Lagos, reports ITRealms.

Industry observers recall that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and key stakeholders focused searchlight on efraud which allegedly caused the loss of over N4 billion in the country.

ITRealms recalls that with over N30 trillion transactions carried out on different e-payment channels by businesses and individuals in the country, stakeholders have expressed worries over cases of e-fraud, which they said discouraging some people financial inclusion.

Reliable sources at the Nigerian Interbank Settlements System Plc. (NIBSS) revealed to ITRealms that over N4 billion was lost to cases of e-frauds in 2015 alone.

ITRealms also reports that the conference with the theme: ‘E-Payment Fraud: People, Process and Technology’ would hold at the Civic Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos on November 8, this year.

For the Chief Executive Officer, E-PPAN, Mrs. Regha Onajite, the conference has been designed to be a veritable rallying ground for the financial industry to deliberate on payment systems and fraud knowledge in West Africa.

“This event will bring together senior level officers of the fintech sector, banking, regulatory bodies and public officers. Our core focus on this years’ edition is to tackle fraud in a proactive and top-down approach that involves people, process and technology. This will help create effective combats against the activities of the e-payment fraudsters in Nigeria,” she said.

Explaining specific objectives of the conference, she said the conference address the challenges posed by people’s laxity in divulging and compromising organisation information system to fraudsters.

“It will also re-appraise, reconnect and tackle the processes that compromised the entire system of e-payment hemisphere in Nigeria, and fashion out how organisations can invest in and deploy the right technologies to enable the industry be a step ahead of these criminals,” she said.

Onajite added that E-PPAN partners at this year’s event, apart from the CBN, include the Nigerian Electronic Fraud Forum (Neff), Committee of –Banking Head (CeBIH), Committee of Chief Compliance Officers of Banks in Nigeria (CCCOBIN), Information Security Society of Nigeria (ISSAN) and the Association of Chief Audit Executives of Banks in Nigeria (ACAEBIN), among others.

She said attendance for the conference was free urging persons to register for the event, which, she said, would be a melting pot of ideas to proffer solutions to the cases of e-fraud in the nation’s e-payment industry.

IGR tops agenda @e-PPAN eGovt summit … CBN, others buy-in

All is now set at the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja, for the fifth e-Government Summit by the Electronic Payment Association of Nigeria (E-PPAN), with the top on agenda being the nation’s dwindling Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), reports ITRealms.

This is coming as the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) of government officials alongside thoughts leaders, executives and players in the electronic payment industry are gearing up for the summit next Tuesday, reports ITRealms.

A press statement made available to ITRealms, the organisers said the summit is ready to play host to over 150 delegates made up of strategist, policy-makers and leaders’ at the two-day event.

The E-Government Summit is an annual event that provides a pedestal for the public and private sector to dialogue with each other on a topical issues revolving around developments in electronic payment space with bias for public sector.

The 2016 Summit with the theme: ‘Attaining Increased Internally-Generated Revenue (IGR), Efficiency and Accountability through Smart Innovations,’ provides yet unique opportunity for stakeholders to dialogue and share ideas on how to leverage and harness smart technologies with positive strides to increasing the nations’ IGR.

According to the statement signed by, the forum will focus on areas that can foster innovative ideas on how the government can use revenue generation, data management, opportunities on shared infrastructure, reduce capital costs and operating overheads to build a nation that is self-reliance.

“This years’ summit will cover topics such as Increasing IGR, for Government MDA’s through Implementation of Smart Solution; Delivering Innovative Citizen-centric Services using ICT; Adopting the Financial Inclusion Roadmap for Improved Economy and Good Governance; Smart Government through Shared Services Model; Data Integration and Analysis, for Strategic Economic Development amongst others,” the organisers said.
