In the heart of Nigeria's digital economy, a story of patriotism and resilience unfolds. The telecommunications sector, a driving force behind the country's growth, has been facing unprecedented challenges. Despite its significant contributions to Nigeria's social and economic development, the sector has been struggling to keep up with the rising costs of operations.

For nearly a decade, telecom tariffs in Nigeria remained unchanged, while the demand for data and voice services skyrocketed. The cost of operations, however, surged due to rising energy costs, inflation, currency devaluation, and increased costs of importing telecom equipment. These mounting expenses threatened the very foundation of the sector, making it difficult for operators to maintain infrastructure and deliver high-quality services.

The Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) in the country have declared that they followed due process in achieving the 50 per cent telecoms tariff hike as approved by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) reports ITREALMS.

He also denied any atom of arbitrariness in the exercise which took over 12 years in coming since the last tariff upward adjustment was made in the sector.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), has adduced some reasons on why it approved the 50 per cent is telecom services tariff in the country, reports ITREALMS.

NCC also said that the steps were in pursuant to its power under Section 108 of the Nigerian Communications Act, 2003 (NCA) to regulate and approve tariff rates and charges by telecommunications operators.

The Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) has called for imminent tariff review to reflect the economic realities of delivering telecom services at a minimum cost and for industry sustainability, reports ITREALMS.

ALTON chairman, Engr. Gbenga Adebayo made this call in an address at the End-of-Year Dinner with Industry Stakeholders on Sunday 29th December 2024, entitled ‘Before the final call – Telecom – As Sector Under Siege’ said that without this, operators cannot continue to guarantee service availability.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has declared a contravention, the action of the Starlink regarding tariffs in the country, reports ITREALMS.

Disclosing this, the Director, Public Affairs at NCC, Mr. Reuben Muoka told ITREALMS that the Starlink, unilaterally reviewed its subscription packages upwards without approval of the Commission.

The Nigerian telecommunications sector has remained, perhaps, the most dynamic section of the economy for over two decades. It is a major newsmaker. It strives to keep abreast of the latest development across the globe.

Nigerian students hail Glo’s 11k per second rate

Nigerian students all over the country have demonstrated their enthusiasm over the re-launch of Globacom’s special tariff package formulated for the young and young at heart, reports ITRealms.

Globacom’s Chief Marketing Officer, Mr. Ashok Israni said that the product tagged Glo Bounce,was aimed at significantly enhancing the communication experience of Nigerian youths, hence it allows subscribers to exchange calls at the pocket friendly rate of 11 kobo per second, ITRealms gathered.

Besides the heavily discounted rate of 11 kobo per second, Glo Bounce has many other interesting features which have already endeared it to the hearts of trend-setting young individuals in schools and those in formal or informal employment, according to Israni.

ITRealms also learnt that some of the features include ‘Campus Zone’, which enables subscribers to call other lines at the rate of 11 kobo per second once activated.

Information reaching ITRealms further disclosed that subscribers on the platform also get 15MB of data free for every recharge of N200 and above, as well as unlimited, free SMS.  To get on the Bounce platform, subscribers are requested to dial *170*4#. To opt for Campus Zone, they are required to dial *170*9#.

Speaking on the package, ITRealms learnt, Hafsat Adejumo, a 200 level student of University of Ibadan, said although she has another line, she uses the Glo line more these days.
