Lagos CP unveils new security measures to tackle petty thieves, robbers - ITREALMS

The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, Imohimi Edgal, has expressed worry over complaints from some neighbourhoods in Lagos alleging increased activities of petty thieves and robbers who specialise in vandalising vehicles parked by roadsides at night, reports ITREALMS.

As said by the Police Public Relations Officer, Lagos State, CSP Chike Oti, to reverse the trend, the CP has in addition to his directives to Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers to carry out strings of operations in their areas of responsibilities, advised all communities in Lagos to adopt the following measures in order to improve security in their areas:

1. All streets/communities should as a matter of urgency appoint a Chief Security Officer (CSO) from their midst. This exercise is to be coordinated by the CDA of such area.

2. It will be the responsibility of the CSO to get the phone numbers of DPOs, operation officers and patrol and guard officers closest to them and distribute same widely to members of their community.

3. It will be the responsibility of the CSO to arrange for street guards who will keep watch at night and raise the alarm when necessary to frustrate night marauders.

4. It will be the responsibility of the CSO to reinvigorate and coordinate the already existing joint vigilante/police patrol at night between 12 midnight and 4am in conjunction with the DPO of that locality.

5. In areas where vigilance groups have not been formed in accordance with laid down legal/operational modalities earlier issued by the Commissioner of Police, it will be the responsibility of the CSO to immediately liase with his DPO to ensure that these vigilance groups are set up.

6. The CP has also observed that the two toll free lines, 767/112 are jammed due to call traffic. To reduce the strain on these lines, the CP has released the following 10 numbers domiciled at the Citizen Complaint Hot Centre (CCHC) for use by communities to alert law enforcement officers:

7. It will be the responsibility of the CSO to ensure that these lines are given widest publicity.

The CP wishes to reiterate that security is not only a joint endeavour but an expensive business. He therefore enjoins communities to pay their security dues to enable CSOs to put in place street guards to complement the effort of the police.

Finally, the Commissioner of Police assures Lagosians of security in the remaining part of the yuletide season and enjoins them to celebrate and enjoy moderately during the festive period.

Bigotry statement: Anglican clergies tackle Joe Igbokwe over Peter Obi - ITREALMS

Anglican clergies in Anambra State have tackled Joe Igbokwe and berated him over a bigotry statement on the Vice Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Sir Peter Obi, reports ITREALMS.

In his reactions, the Archbishop, Province on the Niger, Most Rev. Dr. Christian Efobi, in referring to Obi stint in Anambra State and good governance unlike what Nigerians are witnessing at the Federal today, resorted to a biblical quote: “When the righteous are on the throne, the people rejoice.”

Also, the Anglican Bishop of Onitsha, Most Rev. Dr. Owen Nwokolo, what Anambra witnessed under Obi is a revolution, the likes of which the State has not witnessed in the past.

According to Bishop Ephraim Ikeakor of Amichi Diocese, Obi had done very well as a governor, especially on his return of schools to the Churches has made the difference in education.

“His collaboration with the Church is yielding fruits,” he said, declaring that any person who said he (Obi) had not done well is a blatant liar. 

ITREALMS reported that the Anglican Bishop of Ihiala, Most Rev. Dr. Raphael Okafor, during the first session of the Second Synod of the Diocese at St. Andrew Church, Lilu said, “His Excellency, Mr. Peter Obi, CON, the former Governor of Anambra State will always be celebrated in the State. We cannot forget him and his Government, which was a Golden Era in this State which we hope will continue.”

At St. John’s Anglican Church, Umueze-Anam, while presenting an award to Obi, the Diocesan Bishop and Synod President, Rt. Rev. Dr. Henry Okeke, said “the award became expedient given that it was the last Obi would attend our synod as governor. He is a friend of the Diocese and he is being honoured in recognition of his contribution towards the success of the Diocese since inception as well as the development of Anambra West as a whole.”

At the 1st Session of the 29th Synod of Anglican Diocese on the Niger at St. Thomas Church, Oraukwu, the Bishop of the Diocese, Right Reverend Professor Godwin Okpala said, “I thank Mr. Peter Obi whole-heartedly for always identifying with affairs of the Church. God will continue to bless and uplift him for transforming the entire State. He has set a standard others will strive to emulate.”

The Anglican Bishop of the Diocese of Niger West, Rt. Revd Prof Anthony Nkwoka at Archbishop Patterson's Seminary, Igbariam said this of Obi: “We shall remain prayerful at all times for God to give the State a Governor that will be like Gov. Peter Obi when his tenure expires. I have followed the Governor's politics over the years and I see in him essential godliness that is absent among Nigerian politicians. By returning schools to the missions with sincere apologies and providing funds for their rehabilitation, Obi has left an indelible legacy for generations unborn."

In his own remarks about Obi, the Anglican Bishop of Awka, Rt. Rev Alexander Ibezim, during his visit to the Comprehensive Secondary School, Nawfia said: “development under Peter Obi in all sectors, especially education is marvelous… Obi’s example in governance is worthy of emulation for building institutions, unlike the past governors of the state that built individuals.”

For them, Obi deserves the support of very blooded Igbo man in his efforts at support Atiku presidency to reposition Nigeria.

AFRICMIL, Akin Fadeyi Foundation partner to tackle corruption

The African Centre for Media and Information Literacy (AFRICMIL) is partnering the Akin Fadeyi Foundation (AFF) on a major collaboration aimed at fostering a strong alliance in furtherance of both organization’s common objective to combat corruption in Nigeria, reports ITRealms.

AFRICMIL’s project against graft is themed Corruption Anonymous (CORA) while Akin Fadeyi Foundation took the nation by storm when it launched Corruption Not In My Country, a series of audio-visual TV commercials against corruption at the micro level. It enjoyed the endorsement of international development partners like the European Union, UNDP and UNODC.

Coordinator of AFRICMIL, Chido Onumah, said his organization was “excited to collaborate with Akin Fadeyi Foundation to combat corruption through its creative anti-corruption tools which resonate with Nigerians and are in tune with our objectives to promote active citizens’ involvement in exploring the whistle-blowing opportunity.”

According to Onumah, the CORA project seeks to promote whistleblowing among Nigerians, maintain the integrity of the process and ensure protection for whistleblowers. He said CORA would continue to work with like-minded organizations like Akin Fadeyi Foundation committed to recreating a new and better Nigerian society whose ideals, vision and aspirations are etched on transparency and integrity.

“In working together, we shall explore further opportunities for creative, impactful and far-reaching messages to our target audiences and the public. This partnership will also enable us to strengthen the capacity of citizens to engage their leaders in public dialogue against corruption and demand for accountable governance,” Onumah noted.

The Executive Director, Akin Fadeyi Foundation, Mr. Akin Fadeyi said, “This is an encouraging development as we join forces with key stakeholders in the ever-challenging anti-corruption war. This new partnership with Corruption Anonymous (CORA) is a boost to our efforts at creating robust public dialogue against corruption, particularly as we seek to empower citizens to shun corruption and demand accountability from government institutions. At Akin Fadeyi Foundation, we are committed to a Nigeria where integrity and transparency will define our ways of life. We are very eager to stem the destructive tide of corruption as an acceptable norm.”

Corruption Anonymous (CORA) is a project of the African Centre for Media and Information Literacy (AFRICMIL) that seeks to build public confidence and support for the whistleblowing policy of the Nigerian government as well as reinforce protection for whistle-blowers.

Akin Fadeyi Foundation has been unrelenting in raising citizens voice-action for more transparent institutions and general value reorientation through its grassroots Pan-Nigeria campaign against retail corruption tagged: CORRUPTION, NOT IN MY COUNTRY. Apart from TV broadcast, it has engaged with communities and taken the messages to schools to strengthen the capacity of young people as very critical vulnerable sectors of the society.

GEM-Tech 2016: A4AI recognized for commitment to tackle gender digital divide

The Web Foundation has been awarded the 2016 GEM-TECH prize for its work to develop gender-responsive Information and Communication Technology (ICT) governance, policy, and access, reports ITRealms.

The award, ITRealms gathered is an annual prize organized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and United Nations (UN) Women, in recognition of efforts at promoting women’s Internet access and online empowerment through A4AI and the Women’s Rights Online programme.

These efforts, ITRealms reports, include activities such as the first-ever summit to focus on policy’s role in bridging the gender digital divide in Africa and the development of scorecards to assess policy efforts in 10 countries.

The Chief Executive Officer, Web Foundation, Anne Jellema, was at hand to accept the award at the just concluded ITU Telecom World in Bangkok.

She also called for governments and companies to react to reverse the trend of digital inequality, with specific focus on “Rights, Education, Access, Content and Targets (REACT).”
