Skype hypnotherapy effective treatment for IBS - ITREALMS

Experts have said that Skype hypnotherapy is an effective treatment for people with severe Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), a new study has found, reports ITREALMS.

The study of 20 patients who had the treatment via the online communications tool, ITREALMS gathered  was led by Professor Peter Whorwell from The University of Manchester and published in the International Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis.
ITREALMS  also gathered that Professor Whorwell is a gastroenterologist at Wythenshawe Hospital, Manchester, where he runs a hypnotherapy clinic for IBS patients.

The patients in the study received 12 hypnotherapy sessions in total: the first was face to face with the remaining 11 sessions delivered via Skype.

Before the treatment, 65 per cent had severe IBS pre-treatment with the remaining 35 per cent having moderate IBS.

After the Skype sessions, 25 per cent of were classed as having severe IBS, 40 per cent moderate IBS and the remaining 35 per cent mild IBS.

All the patients enjoyed significant improvements in their IBS symptoms such as abdominal pain, abdominal bloating and bowel function.

In addition, other symptoms commonly seen in IBS improved such as nausea, headaches, heartburn, low backache, constant lethargy, chest pain and bladder problems. Quality of life, and any anxiety or depression also improved.

When
compared to an earlier study of 1000 patients who had face to face hypnotherapy at the clinic run by Professor Whorwell, the online treatment was only slightly less effective.

Hypnotherapy, in combination with other treatments, has been shown to be an effective treatment for patients with serious symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome which do not respond to other treatment.

However, many patients are unable to access treatment because they are unable to travel.

Despite the successes treatment and its endorsement by the National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE), hypnotherapy has not been widely adopted and is still of limited availability in the UK.

Professor Whorwell said: “Skype is starting to be used in a variety of clinical situations but to our knowledge there have, so far, been no reports of its’ use in hypnosis, particularly in relation to IBS.

“Our centre is funded by the NHS and consequently we receive referrals from all over the UK which means that some patients have to travel long distances for treatment.

“Not only is this costly but also travelling might be impossible because of symptoms such as severe diarrhoea and incontinence. Though some patients may need the occasional “top up” from time to time, there is no reason to believe that the benefits of hypnotherapy delivered by Skype should not be sustained.

“These encouraging results suggest that Skype is an ideal way of treating subjects who may find it difficult to travel to the unit. It is especially noteworthy that if Skype treatment had not been available, 71 per cent of subjects said they would not have been able to have the treatment.

“We now intend to offer Skype hypnotherapy to local residents if we feel that attending the unit would compromise treatment, especially in individuals with the diarrhoeal form of the condition.”

MRA charges NASS on effective FOI implementation, marks 1-year of ‘FOI Hall of Shame’ - ITREALMS Online

The Media Rights Agenda (MRA) has called on the National Assembly to institute measures to enforce compliance with the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act in its capacity as the ultimate oversight body in the implementation of the Law, as the organization marked the first year anniversary of the launch of the “FOI Hall of Shame” reports ITRealms.
“The National Assembly itself apparently recognized this role, which was why in making the Law, it included Section 29 (7) and (8), requiring the Attorney-General of the Federation to report to the National Assembly annually details regarding the implementation of the Act during the preceding year.”
According to him, “We consider these provisions to be consistent with international best practice in the implementation of FOI Laws as they can give the National Assembly a good picture of the status of compliance by the relevant public institutions with the FOI Act and enable it to determine whether additional measures are required to improve the implementation of the Law.”
Section 29(7) of the Act provides that “The Attorney-General shall submit to the National Assembly an annual report on or before April 1 of each calendar year which shall include for the prior calendar year a listing of the number of cases arising under this Act, the exemption involved in each case, the disposition of such cases, and the cost, fees, and penalties assessed” while Section 29(8) stipulates that "Such report shall also include detailed description of the efforts taken by the Ministry of Justice to encourage all government or public institutions to comply with this Act.”
Mr. Ojo noted that “Although the two Attorneys-General of the Federation who have held the position since the FOI Act was enacted in 2011 have religiously submitted their annual reports to the National Assembly without fail, members of the National Assembly have not acted on any of these reports over the last seven years and there is no indication that the reports are even being read by them.”
He explained that widespread violation of the Act led to the initiation of the FOI Hall of Shame in July 2017 to shine the spotlight on public officials and institutions that are undermining the effectiveness of the FOI Act through their actions, inactions, utterances and decisions, noting that 49 inductees have so far been named into the Hall of Shame from all the three arms of government, namely the Legislature, the Judiciary, and the Executive.
Mr. Ojo said “most of the  inductees bagged the ‘FOI Hall of Shame’ Award owing to their obvious disregard for their duties and obligations under the FOI Act, including their failure to submit their annual FOI implementation reports to the Attorney-General of the Federation on or before  February 1 of each year, and failing to publish such reports proactively either on their websites or anywhere else; their failure to respond to requests for information made by members of the public; their failure to train their officials on the public’s right of access to information and equipping them with relevant skills to ensure the effective implementation of the Act; as well as their failure to designate appropriate officers and to publish the titles and addresses of such officer to whom applications for information by members of the public can be sent.”
He expressed concern that even one year after the launch of the Hall of Shame, the 2017 Annual Report on the Implementation of the FOI Act, submitted to the National Assembly on March 27, 2018 by the Attorney-General of the Federation still indicated that 90 per cent of public institutions are not complying with their reporting obligations.
Mr. Ojo called on the Attorney-General of the Federation to explore administrative sanctions to ensure that public institutions to which the FOI Act applies take their duties and obligations under the Act seriously and respect the rights of Nigerians to information, which is also a fundamental right of citizens of all countries as established under international law.
By so doing, he said, the Attorney-General of the Federation will be giving effect to the provisions of Section 29(6) of the FOI Act which stipulates that “the Attorney General shall in his oversight responsibility under this Act ensure that all institutions to which this Act applies comply with the provisions of the Act.”
Mr. Ojo urged the Attorney-General of the Federation to solicit the assistance of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation and the National Assembly in applying appropriate pressure on all public institutions to fully implement the Act.

Effective Communications: PODE developing standards for MDAs – Ogunlesi

The Federal Government (FG) has advanced plans in the development of standards on Digital Engagement Policy to boost effective communications for the Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), reports ITRealms.

Head, Presidency Office for Digital Engagement (PODE), Mr. Tolu Ogunlesi disclosed this weekend in Lagos, at a stakeholder roundtable on digital rights and engagements put together by PODE, Facebook and ParadigmInitiative.

According to him, his office was working hard on creating digital engagement standards that would guide all government offices in their use of digital tools to ensure effective communication with the public.

"There is currently no social media policy for the Federal Government. This is understandable as social media use is relatively new in government circle. But this situation has led to inconsistency in the way government offices use digital media. We are currently working on creating a digital engagement policy for the federal government,” he said.

In addition, Ogunlesi disclosed this will provide guidelines on platforms to use, accounts administration, logo and naming standard, editorial policies, archival system, content process and management, among other things.

The Executive Director, Paradigm Initiative, ‘Gbenga Sesan, emphasised at the roundtable on the need for continuous conversation between stakeholders in the private sector, civil society and the government on digital rights issues in Nigeria.

"Digital right issues are far too important to our democracy and it is crucial that we engage in conversation with security agencies and public servants on how we can ensure freedom of people online while keeping the nation and citizens safe," he said.

In her remarks, the Facebook Public Policy Manager for Africa, Akua Gyeke said, "Facebook is an important platform for political conversation in Nigeria, and we are happy to be a part of this.

Facebook, she said, is dedicated to keeping people safe online, foster civility and responsible behaviour and promoting free expression and sharing.

8 things that make group chat effective

There are 8 things that have been identified to make a group chat active:

1. Always learn to appreciate other people's posts even if they may not be your friend: it makes them feel important and encouraged.

2. Never run people down on a group chat; you will cause them to withdraw.

3. When you see something you don't like, inbox (personal chat with) the person ... don't attack him/her publicly.

4. Never settle scores with anybody on a general group chat, you will make others want to take sides, thereby causing the other(s) to withdraw.

5. When anyone is celebrating, he/she may not need to be your friend before you celebrate with that person.  It’s the spirit of brotherliness to share in their celebration. It makes people feel welcome.

6. Nobody has the gift of talking and others the gift of reading... Learn to contribute in the group, even if it is just using the symbol 👍 it makes people know you appreciate the group.

7. There are 4 types of posts you will see on a group chart ....
(a) Offensive posts
Don't attack the person, attack the posts.
(b) Inspirational/ Educative posts
Commend the person. Don't just read and keep quiet
(c) Meaningless/ Wrongly uninformed posts
Start by appreciating the writer, then correct the information, and
(d) Jokes
Even if it is not funny, or you have seen it before; just encourage the person by at least a laugh symbol 😀.

(8) If it’s a professional group, try to keep to the terms | objectives | goals of the group. And if you must share something not too sure it falls within the group’s premise, start the post with ‘Apology.’

Above all, everyone posting must try to make their posts as brief as possible for people to enjoy.

I hope these highlights will be meaningful enough to somebody to make our group a better one.

Thanks and God bless you as you make a digital SENSE!
