Absence of socio-economic data bane of Nigeria ICT growth -Gov Mimiko
ITRealms:
The executive governor of Ondo State, Olusegun Mimiko has
blamed Nigeria’s stunted Information and Communications Technology (ICT) status
on absence of social and economic data, reports ITRealms.
He called on the Nigeria Computer Society (NCS) to consider
harmonizing technology ideas from different ICT groups in the country, into a
common vision that will guide the development of ICT nationwide.
Mimiko who was represented by his deputy, Lasisi Oluboyo,ITRealms gathered, gave the advice while declaring open, the 12th
International Conference of NCS in Akure, said Nigeria as a country, has skilled
manpower with technology ideas, but lacks the platform for harmonization. He
challenged the NCS to assemble the finest technology brains in the country in
order to drive national development with ICT.
He eulogized the Ondo State Residency Card, commonly
referred to as 'Kaadi Igbe Ayo', which he said is a home-grown solution that
would further enhance the people oriented programmes and projects of the state.
, stressing “The card project is primarily aimed at service delivery management
and not for identification."
ITRealms reports also that the President of Computer Professionals Registration
Council of Nigeria (CPN), Prof. Vincent Asor, corroborated the Governor, saying
that Information Technology (IT) as a tool for national development cannot
be overemphasized. He said CPN is currently working on new ways to register all
IT professionals in the country in order to have a comprehensive database of IT
professionals that will enhance collective development of the country.
"CPN is working
on a new certificate that will identify IT professionals in the country, that
will also help in eliminating quackery in the system," Asor said.
The outgoing President of NCS, Prof. David Adewumi in his
keynote said this year’s theme,
'Information Technology for Inclusive Development,’ was carefully chosen to
drive thoughts towards using IT for national development, considering the fact
that development in all ramifications, is pivoted in information technology.
